    I carry discreet earplugs that I put in when in similar situations. They are really cheap but probably reduce the harshness of kids screaming, dogs barking, or noisy restaurants by 15 decibels. Alpine Party Plugs. They are transparent and barely visible. They have been a lifesaver for me.

    @4Grace I avoid loud places and situations, where possible, such as dogs barking. If unavoidable I wear discreet earplugs. I continue to go to work in an office, go on hols and do most things normal folk do but it can take its toll on you. I outright avoid certain things.

    Mirtazapine doesn't list tinnitus as a side effect and is more sedating than Amitriptyline at low doses up to 15 mg. Benzo or Z drugs are more likely to cause tinnitus when you stop them than when you are on them.

    The half life of Gentamycin is 2 to 3 hours, so quite short. Obviously, it depends on the dose you were given but it should be out of your system by the next day. Hopefully you will be OK. My brother was given it intravenously for a few days in hospital with no effect on his hearing.
