Hi- sorry for getting back to you so late. I know :( isn’t it horrible? Every doctor and ent advices against the surgery. I perforated my eardrum during an aeroplane landing. I found out I had an infection too, so it was probably the combination of an infection and the air pressure! The only...

    Young Teens with Tinnitus?

thank you, same with you! I’d say it’s about a 4 usually. Sometimes if I’m having a good day, 2-3. I can hear it over most things like the tv, music etc. And when I’m really tired it’s a 5! You?

I've Been Hearing Sounds in My Ear for Over Three Weeks Now... (And I'm Only 22!)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s so tough. I’m really not sure what’s going on with your ear but I can give a bit of advice based on my own experience. It’s a horrible and scary time to be going to the doctors, but with ears and tinnitus the earlier you get it checked, the better...

Air Pressure on Plane and Wearing Ear Muffs — Any Potential Risks?

Thank you so much everyone I feel more comforted :) I’m on my way to the airport now, I’ll update this thread about how I do! My ent suggested against using earplugs in case of additional pressure! I think and hope that I should be fine with my ear muffs!

Air Pressure on Plane and Wearing Ear Muffs — Any Potential Risks?

Thank you Juan! I will take these into account! what do you think of the additional suction/air pressure the ear muffs create?

Air Pressure on Plane and Wearing Ear Muffs — Any Potential Risks?

Hello, I will be on a 4 hour flight tomorrow. This is my first flight with a perforated eardrum and tinnitus. I bought ear muffs to defend my ears from the noise of the aircraft. However I only just noticed that it causes a suction when I remove it. Will this pressure to my eardrums cause any...

    Hearing Protection for MRI Exam?

Hi guys. My appointment for the MRI scan was today and I completely had an anxiety attack and chickened out. I didn’t have the correct earplugs and did not trust the NHS to accommodate for me so I rescheduled the appointment. I’m going to ask my ENT if it’s 100% necessary to do an MRI, then...

Going to Bars/Clubs/Concerts with Hearing Protection — Wise or Not?

It was in the O2 Arena London which is the 2nd largest U.K. arena! Apparently it was still pretty loud on the seated area where my tickets were booked for. I didn’t know where the speakers were placed either. Oh wow the Apple watch thing sounds handy! You’ve convinced me to get one haha

Clicking Jaw (Maybe TMJ?) a Cause of My Tinnitus?

That’s interesting actually, they do say dental work can cause tinnitus. I also have a clicking jaw on my left side (same side as tinnitus) because I’ve been eating on my right side for the past year due to a filling gone wrong! (Also can’t afford to fix it yet). but I’m pretty certain my cause...

Going to Bars/Clubs/Concerts with Hearing Protection — Wise or Not?

I’m sorry I got to this so late. I’m still avoiding anything that can potentially make things worse, but because I don’t know my limit, it’s hard to tell what I can and cannot do. I haven’t been doing much socialising because of the fear of a spike.

Going to Bars/Clubs/Concerts with Hearing Protection — Wise or Not?

im sorry to hear this! It sucks that you can’t tell until the damage is done! Wish there was an indicator during the event, right? I still don’t know my limits, and I’m too scared to test them. Life’s been hard.

Going to Bars/Clubs/Concerts with Hearing Protection — Wise or Not?

I’m not sure how to measure it, but I think it is on the milder side. It can be masked when I’m outdoors by background noises

Does Life with Tinnitus Actually Become Better?

Hi guys, Has it actually gotten better for anyone with long term tinnitus? I’ve had tinnitus for about 3 months now and I’m tired of people telling me it will get better - it is actually getting worse. I can’t go 5 minutes without thinking about it. It has affected my social life SO badly. And...

    Hearing Protection for MRI Exam?

Thank you for your help. I called up the MRI department and told them my problem. They said they will provide me with earplugs and earmuffs. I will still take my own earplugs and if they don’t accommodate me with proper earplugs I will refuse to go in the machine. Thank you for your help!

    Hearing Protection for MRI Exam?

This is brilliant thank you for the earplug suggestion. oh wow I didn’t know that. It says they provide headphones that play music. Are these not effective? I will give them a call about the ear muffs. Do I provide my own?

    Hearing Protection for MRI Exam?

hi, I’m not sure what you mean by unilateral? I’ve got it in my left ear caused by a perforation that hasn’t healed. I am staying away from reading about those stories. I just want to be as protected as possible and get my mri done!

    Hearing Protection for MRI Exam?

I have an MRI scan on Friday to see if they can uncover the cause of my tinnitus. Will standard foam earplugs be effective to protect my tinnitus from getting louder when paired up with the ear muffs that they provide? What earplugs would you recommend?

Loud Tone for a Few Seconds — Fleeting / Transient Spontaneous Tinnitus

I have had tinnitus for about 3 months now. This is going to be hard to describe, but you know that high pitches noise you get in your ear that lasts a few seconds, and fades away? People say that it is a dying hair cell or something. I’ve been having that every now and then, except the high...

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

It can make my tinnitus worse, especially if it ruptures again it will be bad! The plan now is to give it time, do an mri. Maybe one day in the future I’ll have enough of my perforation, and agree to surgery knowing all the risks.
  26. Yas

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

Both ent’s I saw said it’s unlikely that it’ll heal on its own because I’ve already had it for so long. To be honest that’s what I was thinking, he told me that the mri might be able to reveal if anything else is wrong. Although very unlikely, if there is something wrong we might be able to...

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

So I was told that the surgery probably won’t fix the tinnitus and can make tinnitus worse (not sure about odds). Also if I get surgery and it ruptures again because it’s weak, it can also make the tinnitus worse. He couldn’t guarantee that it’ll fix hearing loss or anything either. So basically...

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

I’ve just had a second ENT appointment about my perforation and tinnitus. This time I went private. The ENT provided me good detailed answers and explained everything but he could not give me any solutions. Next step: MRI scan. I don’t have many choices, surgery to patch up the hole is not...

Going to Bars/Clubs/Concerts with Hearing Protection — Wise or Not?

I understood everything just fine because I was wearing silicone earplugs, they don’t do too much. Next time I will be wearing better earplugs to hopefully avoid the spike!

Going to Bars/Clubs/Concerts with Hearing Protection — Wise or Not?

Successfully saw Star Wars today! I wore silicone earplugs because I’m still too scared to wear foam ones. I’d say the T is the tiniest bit louder now that I’m in bed but it’s not the worst. I’m happy I can movies in the cinema again!

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

I’m tired of it, it’s like no matter how much I rest, I’m still so exhausted. But we need to keep pushing through. I’m so sorry to hear about your setback. You can get through this and hopefully it’s just a short temporary spike. Best of luck to you. We have got this!!

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

That makes a lot of sense. After seeing this private ent, if he suggests surgery and risks are slightly lower, I will try to get the surgery with him through the nhs (he’s also an nhs ent).

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

My first ent was an NHS ent, I also have another NHS ent appointment in late February but in the meantime I wanted some more advice. What are your reasons for no private ent?
  36. Yas

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

I asked about the risks- for surgery, 20% failure rate 80% success rate (in my opinion is WAY too low). 1/1000 chance of facial paralysis, and chance of hearing loss. It just doesn’t seem worth the risks for me, I want to seek another way to heal!!

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

Thank you Michael. I for sure trust the ENT that I saw yesterday, but I would love to have received some more information, some more hope at least addressing the perforation. This is the only reason I have booked to see a second ent!

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

Thank you for responding, I have been booked in to see a private ENT on Jan the 2nd. As much as I trust and believe the first ENT, I have hope that there must be more I can do.

Bad ENT Appointment — Are My Eardrum Perforation and Tinnitus Permanent?

So after 6 months of living with an eardrum perforation and 3 months of waiting to see an ENT, I finally had my appointment. I received no advice and no hope. He basically told me that patching up the perforation was too risky and that I should live with the perforation if I could - but he can...

Why Does Getting Cold & Flu "Cure" My Tinnitus?

Hello all, I didn’t want to put this in success stories because I know it’s temporary. My tinnitus has been nice and quiet yesterday and today, in fact, I barely heard it this morning. I almost forgot it excited. I currently have the flu and I’m wondering if it’s because I’m SO sick that my...

I Wish I Could Have Experienced the A-Level System in the UK

In my experience subject choice wasn’t great. We had “blocks” to choose from which meant that the time some of the subjects took place clashed with others. I wanted to do economics and resorted to doing business studies because economics clashed with English etc! You also needed to meet the GCSE...

Thank you for this post Ed, very helpful! I need to do some good research on earplugs and sounds etc etc! Do you have a source I could look at by any chance? Experiences with Myringoplasty?

Thank you for your response! I’m happy to hear that your daughters surgery was successful! I don’t know if I have the luxury of being picky with a surgeon as my treatment is on the NHS, I can’t afford a private surgeon! Thank you for the tips! I will definitely do that!

    Experiences with Myringoplasty?

Hello all. I have been searching the internet to read about people’s experiences with myringoplasty but can’t seem to find much. There’s a high chance that I may need this procedure done to patch up my perforation. My main fear is that it will cause further complications such as louder...

I’m not noise induced, mine was caused by a perforation - I’m so damn unlucky. I’m hoping the ent can help it heal. I think I’ll make the final decision to see Star Wars after seeing my ent!

haha a blessing in disguise. Thank you for your help, I think I’ll be giving it a miss. Maybe some day in the far future when I’ve got my ears all figured out. For now I’ll stick to quietly listening to them out of my phone.
