I'm Scared... Will I Get Tinnitus?

Ear blockage does not equal tinnitus! Just be careful with your ears man. Download a decibel meter app and whenever stuff is over 85 DB for extended periods of time, throw some ear plugs in.

Things to Do After New Sound Exposure?

You are totally right, but being a musician that enjoyed loud bands, it is more than just making it louder. When a band plays at high volume the music almost becomes "tactile". You can feel the bass drum pounding in your chest like a second heartbeat, the bass guitar rattles your guts, and the...

    Passive or Active Noise Cancelling/Isolation?

Passive noise reduction is the way to go. The active "noise canceling" does not do anything to protect your hearing. When I fly I just use ear muffs over top of my ear buds to shut out all the jet sounds.

I Am 14 and I Am Afraid of Getting Tinnitus

Wear those earplugs at your dance lessons or when you are around anything loud. It is not a bad idea to try the vitamins but do not over-do it. Also stay away from headphones and earbuds, those things are awful for your ears! You are still so young that chances are good it will fade. I started...

    Earplugs, Raves and Aggravation!

You probably have aggravated it. Those attenuated plugs do not provide nearly enough protection in my opinion. I have been to festivals that had some DJs playing electronic music, and even though it was outdoors it can still be ear-splitting. DJs seem to LOVE to crank their shit, I saw Cage The...

    MEGA TINNITUS

Man, that sounds horrendous. I am glad your tinnitus settled back down to "normal" though. But on a different note, I do not understand musicians that play that loud. Seriously, marshall stacks, monitors, miked drums, and what ever else just to JAM? How can you even hear anything when it is...

Oh man, your audiologist does not sound like he really knows tinnitus. Yes, it can get worse and loud noise is probably the easiest way. That being said, you should not freak out. Tinnitus is not the end for most people. From here on out you just have to be cautious with your hearing which...

    16-Year-Old Musician

I just prefer the foam ones for rehearsing. I always make sure they are jammed pretty good into my ear canal. The flat attenuation plugs are good for things like movies and parties; things where hearing all the details required to speak to someone is important. Usually, amplified music is loud...

    16-Year-Old Musician

Also a tip for EQ'ing your instrument with plugs in: 1. Does your tone feel thin? 2. Does it sound very dead? 3. Do you feel like you are much too quiet? If all of those are a yes, Congratulations! Your guitar or bass now sounds perfect to those who are not wearing earplugs!
  22. D

    16-Year-Old Musician

Maybe it is just me being overly-protective, but I do think it is best to play with those squishy foam ear plugs. The attenuate much more than the custom plugs. But this is coming from a bassist who does not care about hearing sparkly treble.

    16-Year-Old Musician

If explaining does not do it, try forceful explaining. If that does not do it, then tell him that you will walk if he does not turn down. If he continues to crank stuff at practice, I would quit. But then again... I am into indie and not metal. So I already prefer quieter stuff.
  24. D

    16-Year-Old Musician

Well, first thing is first. Do you wear earplugs? If the answer is no start wearing them immediately in any situation that you have to raise your voice to be heard. Secondly, get a decibel meter or download a decibel meter app. Use it at practice or jams. If it goes above eighty five, which is...

Oh man, these dudes and those horrible subwoofers. I don't even get mad when I hear them out and about. If they are willing to destroy one of their sense for some sort of "street cred," they deserve it. That being said, I do think amplifiers and subwoofers should come with warnings about not...

Honestly, tinnitus seems like the cost of doing business for many musicians. My bandmate has it, and he has no problems with it whatsoever. Do You Think I Can Still Practice Electric Guitar at Home?

Totally! If you are using some pedals like distortion, fuzz, or anything that can increase the volume I would recommend getting a compressor to put at the end of your chain. More specifically, an optical compressor. What the compressor does for you is even out all the volume of your pedals and...

Does Tinnitus Mean No More Headphones?

Not at all thankfully. I have very mild tinnitus. Most of it bothering me comes from anxiety of it becoming catastrophic. I have always protected my hearing and have gotten even more protective of it. Case in point, these "super-hip" ear muffs I wear over top of ear plugs when I play. I also...
