All I know in my experience is that the T in my right ear has become more quiet over the last few years. I haven't simply habituated to it, it IS quieter than it was 5 years ago.

My tinnitus is only severe during the occasional flare-up, otherwise it's more quiet now than it was 5 years ago. Oddly enough, it has switched ears. It's gotten quieter in one ear but louder in the other. It's not severe, just really annoying when I'm closer to silence than I was a few years ago.

Things are cool. The T seems to be shifting back and forth every few weeks between noticeable and comfortably dull.

I don't know how much research is being conducted now, but it will gain more attention in the years to come. Young soldiers are coming back from overseas with T and hearing loss from all the gunfire and demolition, so it is becoming a problem the scientific/medical community can't ignore.

If your T can be reduced, even if it's just temporarily, then it's possible that someday it can be reduced permanently.

I use olive oil drops then a rubber ear syringe with warm water and gentle pressure. It do it as carefully as possible and haven't had any problems so far. Still, I should cut down on how often I do it.

Yeah, I'm terrified of going deaf too. I have otosclerosis, so I'm likely going to have hearing problems for the rest of my life. All I can say is be good to your ears, and everything else for that matter, and you'll put the odds in your favour.

Two questions: 1) What is the difference between hidden hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss? 2) Is hidden hearing loss strictly noise-induced?

Going cold turkey off any drug is never a good idea. You need to taper gradually. I also take Remeron for sleep at just 5mg.

I'm sorry to hear that. My otosclerosis was gradual for the first 4 years but thankfully seems to have stabilized over the last 3. The only reassurance I have is that the disease rarely results in complete deafness. That, and the hope that science figures out how to clone ear hair cells.

I had surgery done on one ear; it was initially successful but wore off after a few months and left my hearing only slightly better than it was before the surgery but with the T now on top of it.

I have moderate to moderately-severe HL because of otosclerosis, then to twist the digger further I was saddled with T on top of it. It sucks. Thankfully, my HL has stabilized and the T is reactive and doesn't bother me most of the time.

My T always reduces to a low, comfortable droning after a few hours of sleep. I too am interested in how this works because maybe it means a method or treatment can be created to elongate it indefinitely.

If you do go with Remeron, keep in mind that you need only a very low dose for sleep. I need only 5mg(1/6th of a full tablet) and I have a good and full night's sleep with only the occasional hangover the next day. I've been taking 5mg of remeron a night for almost 2 years now and I haven't...

Yeah, it's still there but it's comfortably dull most of the time. As far as I can tell, it hasn't gotten better or worse since it started. If it is quiet or absent most of the time, then I can hope that someday they'll come up with either a med or a procedure that will elongate the silence.

Same thing sorta happened to me. I had a stapedectomy nearly a couple of years ago and my tinnitus started a few months afterwards. My ENT still isn't certain about what happened but speculates that scar tissue grew around the plastic prosthesis in my ear and possibly damaged the nerve.

That's catastrophic thinking and it will ultimately do you more harm than any potentially ototoxic drug might do.

Sounds like you're in the circular rut of worrying about your T and thus exacerbating it.
