Setbacks, Sounds and Healing from Hyperacusis

I would love to hear how it goes! Wishing you all the best. This condition and OCD are such a nasty combo.

Setbacks, Sounds and Healing from Hyperacusis

Yes and no. On one hand, my symptoms have improved significantly. The ear fatigue has become much more manageable, I no longer experience daily pain, and although the tinnitus is still loud, it isn't unbearable. However, my sound tolerance and ability to withstand noise without setbacks remain...

Setbacks, Sounds and Healing from Hyperacusis

I’m starting a new thread because I’m further along in my hyperacusis/tinnitus journey (two years now), and I have learned a lot (as much about what I don’t know as what I know). For backstory’s sake, I developed hyperacusis and tinnitus from acoustic trauma (gunshot, no protection) in April...

@Lorca its interesting how the brain can amplify its perception of certain sounds based on the perceived source. Sometimes I do a double take when I am watching a movie on a low volume and a gunshot happens - it still sounds LOUD even when the DB level is measurably insignificant. Same thing...

I never made the headway with DNRS that I intended, but I want to revisit it. I still think neuroplasticity holds massive potential.

So much of this condition feels psychological, but that doesn’t make it any easier to recover. The PTSD from setback after setback is REAL.

@MadeleineHope one last Q, if you dont mind, when you do happen to have an accidental loud noise exposure, do you have any tips to prevent yourself from doomthinking/spiraling from anxiety? This has been one of my biggest issues of late.

@MadeleineHope thanks so much for your thorough and kind messages. Your regimen sounds strikingly similar to what has worked well for me in the past, as well as your belief in the power of neuroplasticity. I’ve healed to 90% from h/t/nox twice now only to have it undone by setbacks, so I know...

@MadeleineHope This has been my most challenging stretch with hyperacusis yet - whereas in the past I could feel progress (even over the course of weeks or months) - this time I have felt almost no improvement since my setback in November. Desperately looking for hope again as I approach the 2...

@MadeleineHope thanks for the comment!! DNRS unfortunately hasn’t been the turning point I’d hoped for. That being said, I never committed to the practice as much as the program suggests, and haven’t really utilized it at all in the last couple months. My partner was just encouraging me to give...

Acoustic Trauma from Unexpected AR-15 Gunfire — Tinnitus, Ear Fullness, Distortion, & Hyperacusis

Hi all, just updating this thread to let you know that I will be giving my best effort at recovering utilizing the DNRS program over the coming months. This is a program that has been used by some others here on Tinnitus Talk with great success (@Marin is the main member that comes to mind), and...

Acoustic Trauma from Unexpected AR-15 Gunfire — Tinnitus, Ear Fullness, Distortion, & Hyperacusis

Hi all, I am unfortunately back with a new update and find myself genuinely baffled at the state my ears have reached. Since my last post, I have continued to cycle between periods of relative normalcy and 1-2 week long spikes where I have to dial everything back. However, I had been able to...

Acoustic Trauma from Unexpected AR-15 Gunfire — Tinnitus, Ear Fullness, Distortion, & Hyperacusis

Hmm, I would say I have experienced both. But the important thing is whichever one it is, make sure you put in your earplugs as quickly as possible to limit exposure. I feel pretty confident that extended exposure to fire alarms without earplugs would have definitely caused at least a small...

I’ve visited parties/bars with loud music, went to a comedy show with loud speakers, went to movies, and even danced at a club for short periods of time (all with earplugs of course), none permanently worsened my condition, though some caused flairs. BUT I’ve limited these activities to my best...

Acoustic Trauma from Unexpected AR-15 Gunfire — Tinnitus, Ear Fullness, Distortion, & Hyperacusis

I'm sorry to hear about your setback, I know how difficult they can be, especially when you are in the acute phase and don't know if recovery can happen at all. Wishing you all the best in your continued recovery! The crazy thing is, no matter how many times I read not to let it happen to me, I...

Acoustic Trauma from Unexpected AR-15 Gunfire — Tinnitus, Ear Fullness, Distortion, & Hyperacusis

Hi everyone, I wanted to give an update now 15 months post the acoustic trauma that started my journey with tinnitus and hyperacusis. I had hoped that one day I'd be able to share a "success story" and I think in some ways I can do that, though these conditions are much more nuanced than success...

Acoustic Trauma from Unexpected AR-15 Gunfire — Tinnitus, Ear Fullness, Distortion, & Hyperacusis

Hi all - update on my hyperacusis and tinnitus after almost 4 months. Months one and two were horrifyingly bad. I couldn't leave my house for the majority of that time. However, I did make steady (albeit slow) progress, and was able to go to places like restaurants with earplugs by the end of...

Acoustic Trauma from Unexpected AR-15 Gunfire — Tinnitus, Ear Fullness, Distortion, & Hyperacusis

Still only 25! I was able to protect my right ear so no ringing there, the tinnitus is only in the left ear. The sensitivity to noise and aural fullness are in both ears though.

Acoustic Trauma from Unexpected AR-15 Gunfire — Tinnitus, Ear Fullness, Distortion, & Hyperacusis

Hi all - update after the weekend. Good news and bad news. The bad first - turns out the relationship strain I mentioned actually existed because my partner was cheating on me, lying about it, and upon confronting her left me after three years of an incredible relationship. So that is a whole...

Acoustic Trauma from Unexpected AR-15 Gunfire — Tinnitus, Ear Fullness, Distortion, & Hyperacusis

Hi all. As of writing this I am horrified for my future but it feels like the people around me don't recognize how vulnerable of a place I am in. I have already struggled with chronic health conditions and depression/anxiety for years, but only as of the last couple of months I've finally gotten...
