Cause of Tinnitus
Allergies/ sinus
Hello,

I've been depressed with this tinnitus; mine started 4 weeks ago after a having bad allergies/sinus issues. I went to the MD said my ear is clogged up, was on sudafed and nasal spray. I only used it for 3 days and stop. That is when my T got worse, I went to 2 urgent care said I had fluids in my ears and gave me antihistamines. I only took that for 1 day, made my T worse. Another urgent care did an ear lavage on my right ear; made my T worse. I went to the dentist said my TMJ is flared up that can cause T. Took advil made my T worse.

It's been 4 weeks I'm back to taking nasal spray and sudafed which cleared up my ear and my T is more like a humming sound. I never had this problem before, I feel anxious and depressed. I can hear fine from both ear but my tinnitus is mainly from my right ear. No nausea, no vertigo, i feel fine just the T. Is this going to be permanent? Just scared.

Antihistamines will reduce mucus so I would try find one your ok with.
Steam inhalation should help too!
Also Sudafed.

Thank you so much for the response; I also noticed that when The sudafed and nasal spray wears of my ringing gets loud.

@GregCA : i should still got to an ENT? Or audiologist? What is sensorineural losses? I never had problen with my hearing before. This is new to me.

@glynis: i stop using the histamines, just nasal spray and sudafed. Im so depressed.

@Stasiapascual ,
I am a sever asthmatic and lot of allergies.
Extra mucous due to allergies and sinus problems can cause post nasil drip and at night mucous goes down the back of your throat and in to your eustation tubes causing ear problems.
Tinnitus comes with lots of unwanted emotions and low mood, loss of self worth and confidence .
We are here to support you around the clock .
Make sure you are getting support with low mood by your doctor etc so don't suffer alone.
CBT can really help and antidepressants if needed.

@glynis: i do have asthma and severe allergies but I never experience tinnitus. Thank you for the support, really appreciate it.

@GregCA: thanks for the info. Do u think i need to see an ENT too? Does audiologist take insurance?

Updated: I have an appt with a TMJ specialist tomorrow- they said my ringing can be from my TMJ. I am using all my resource to get to the bottom of this ringing.

Reg MD- i had pressure/ fluids in my ear 4 weeks ago, no ear infection, prob due to sinus/allergies, prescribed sudafed and nasal spray.
Urgent care: fluids in the left ear, not right ear look good but my ringing is on my right ear, prescribed antihistamine and they mention i had high blood pressure 130/100 no symptom of bp. T cont.
2nd urgent care: no infection, no fluids, but had earwax build up in right ear; did an ear lavage on the right ear. More pressure and pain the right ear. T cont.
Chiropractor: t still there
Tmj specialist: appt tomorrow

I am so desperate to find out what is causing my tinnitus. Its driving me crazy, anxious, i don't like to take a lot of meds neither.

Please let us know how you go on tomorrow with your TMJ specialist.

The ENT will want to see the data from the audiologist, so it's probably better to go to the audiologist first. Generally you are sent there by the ENT, so it may look like it's coming out of the blue for the audiologist if you go there directly, but you can generally do that if you have a PPO plan that doesn't require a referral. My insurance does cover audiologists.

@GregCA : Thank you for the info. R u still suffering from T? Mine is a low humming...

Yes I am still suffering from it, but I'm a minority: most people don't have a severe version of it. You will probably be fine whether it completely disappears (which is likely) or if it stays but slowly fades out of your consciousness.

@GregCA: thank you so much!!! I have an appt with an audiologist tomorrow.

Great!

Can u tell me how long and the sound of your tinnitus?

By "how long?" you mean how long I've had it? Since march 2016.
If you mean when I hear it, then it's 24x7.

What it generally sounds like is some high frequency drill, around 7-8 kHz, with some overtones in higher frequencies (they trigger like morse code - these aren't continuous).
Then every once in a while, mostly when I lay down (ie at night), a lower hum adds itself to the mix.

I've worked with an audiologist to try to mask my T, but the masking sound was going to be too loud to be safe, so we decided against it. I do have a hearing aid with some broadband noise, and I think it does help to some extent, even if it doesn't mask my T - it takes some edge off of it.

Good luck tomorrow, and keep us posted!

@glynis @GregCA : update I went to see the Tmj specialist he said I do have TMJ and that may be the cause of my ringing. I need to have a CT Scan of the jaw done and fit into start mago therapy. My bite is off also. Tommorrow i will see an audiologist. My right ear tinnitus is much louder than usually i noticed some pain along with my ear. I am still feeling depressed and anxious, what if this T is here to stay.

Thanks for the update. You should feel good about it rather than depressed: you have a probable cause, which means you have a chance at a treatment.
Good luck!

Hi, can you please tell me how the Tmj treatment helping your tinnitus?? I've been suffering for 16 years and it's getting louder. I'm starting to think it's my wisdom teeth that's causing it.

Did you figure out if it was your wisdom teeth the reason? I was told I had tog et them removed like a year ago but never did it and now I'm starting to worry it might be the cause of mine.
