Cause of Tinnitus
Years of excessively loud headphone use
2 months ago I suffered acoustic trauma to both my ears due to loud headphone music. Ever since then in my bad ear (left) (they are both pretty bad by comparison before the trauma) feels like theirs something inside it.

No, my eardrum is not ruptured. I did rupture it a few years ago from a q-tip. That's when I learned q-tip/cotton swab in ear= bad. I can't remember which ear it was. But it completely healed.

If I had a ruptured eardrum now my audiologist, ENT, primary care doctor, nurse after nurse and pediatrician at two different hospitals would have seen it. It's safe to say. My ear canal and eardrum have been check on their exterior enough times to know they are fine.

I want to know if someone has had the same sensation. It doesn't hurt. Nor does it cause me pain. It just feels like theirs a mass inside my ear that shouldn't be there. I've been blessed with the ability to wiggle my ears. I feel it really pronounced then when I do.

I got tested for neuroma and luckily nothing came up.

At first I thought that you were describing a "full ear" sensation. But if you actually feel something being in your ear, then that wouldn't be it. Every doctor (doesn't have to be an ENT) will be able to take a look in your ears and see whether or not anything that doesn't belong there is located there.

@Taylorslay

With noise induced tinnitus the auditory system has been traumatized by sound. In effect "shocked" suffered an injury and it will take time for this to recover. It is not uncommon for tinnitus and hyperacusis to result as you have been experiencing for two last months. Each person will experience noised induced tinnitus differently. Since tests have shown that you haven't any underlying medical condition that is responsible for your symptoms, you have to leave this healing process to time.

The feeling of mass inside your ear I experienced something similar and a whole lot more when I had my noise trauma 21 years ago. In addition to severe tinnitus and hyperacusis, the whole of my head and auditory system felt completely numb. Although I could hear everything sounded like I was under water and it was frightening. This lasted for over six months. A doctor explained to me that the auditory system mostly consists of nerves and in my case they had become traumatized (bruised) by high levels of sound with headphone use and I had literally blown a fuse so to speak. He tried reassuring me in time this will heal and advised me to take Gingko Biloba and magnesium tablets and that I should see a herbalist for these which I did. This was 21 years ago and I can't thank that doctor enough for at the time, I knew nothing about tinnitus nor did I have access to the Internet.

Hi Taylorslay, what is the sensation like? Is it a constant feeling or an intermittent feeling of something moving around inside the ear?

If the latter, I would possible consider acoustic shock and tonic tensor tympani syndrome (TTTS). Constant stress and anxiety can keep this going

Would the warm sensation I have be an example of that as well? Since it happens from things that aren't loud enough to hurt me. :( it's been bothering me to all hell. I keep thinking I'm hurting myself but I don't think I am. Yet I keep asking "Well okay. Why is it warm?". Because I experienced a similar situation right after my trauma. My ears were hot and felt like their was hot liquid in them for weeks. Then it went away.

I'm scared for Thanksgiving dinner tommorow well the clanking of the dishes.

There's nothing. If there was something foreign it should have shown up on my MRI right?

I'm so blessed to have gotten that MRI before my H set in.

I believe everything that you are experiencing is to do with "noise trauma" to your auditory system. As I advised you some time ago. See a herbalist and explain what has happened and that you've been advised to take Gingko biloba and magnesium. This will take time to heal and there's nothing that you can do other than to take the steps I've mentioned and leave it to time and try not to get too stressed over this. Try to avoid overly loud sounds. I don't think Thanksgiving or the Christmas festivities will be much of a problem. You can use noise reducing earplugs. The important thing is not to keep stressing over this as it will instil "negative thinking" and that is something you do not want.

Try and get along with your life and this will help you to feel more positive. The more you worry about these symptoms the more importance you are giving them. If you are not careful, this can affect the healing and habituation process so try to relax and take things easy.

All the best

I am taking magnesium glycinate. Not Gingko though.

Please start taking Gingko Biloba and I advise you to never stop. It can help some people with tinnitus and often helps to improve hearing, as it increases the blood circulation to the extremities of the body. This is: feet, hands and head including the auditory pathways.

Will Sedley has compiled a lot of the research on Ginkgo Biloba, and states that it has not been shown to improve tinnitus or hearing. I believe he states it in this video

I took high quality Ginkgo Biloba for over 6 months at very substantial doses, and it did not improve my tinnitus or hearing, in fact my condition worsened.

Please cite your sources regarding Ginkgo Biloba's efficacy.

It should also be noted that Ginkgo Biloba can have serious interactions with prescription medications, and other herbal supplements.

Please follow my advice @Taylorslay I have had tinnitus for many years. When I had a hearing test 6 months after my noise trauma and started take Gingko Biloba on a doctor's advice. My ENT consultant was surprised to see that my hearing was well above normal. I have had many hearing tests over the years and fortunately the results have been the same. I believe GB has helped in this.

Take care

You are wrong, Ginkgo biloba can cause a hemorrhage in some people, really dangerous for those who are on blood thinners already!

YOU ARE NOT A DOCTOR WHY DO YOU ACT LIKE IT?

I have been taking Ginkgo Biloba for 21 years and never had a problem with it. Of course I forgot to advise @Taylorslay to consult with her doctor before taking and I thank you for making me remember this.

In future when you correspond with me please have the good manners not to shout using block capital letters. Do this again and I will not acknowledge you.

I also feel like my left ear have something in it or its like a sensible area or tendon. When I contract the muscle under the ear near my jaw I clearly feel something is going on in a specific area and I feel a needle like sensation percing. I also had an acoustic trauma like you. I tried gingko for a while but didnt seem to notice a difference except for a little more H and after 2 months I was able for the first time to pop my left ear (wasnt able before) dont know if it was related. Im one year and a half in and feel bad because of other mental health condition

Michael, two pharmacists have told me that mixing clonazapam and ginkgo biloba is potentially dangerous, though there is not enough research to demonstrate who will have a severe reaction to the combination. I tapered off Ginkgo Biloba months in advance of taking clonazapam as a result.

Yet as far as I have gathered from your posts, you take both, and have no problems. Have you actually talked to a doctor about this combination in recent years? Someone knowledgeable on these topics?

If you take both, and since you experience no problems, I guess you feel it is safe to recommend Ginkgo Biloba to everybody on the forum, but I never really see your reasoning or any data behind it.

This is all second to the fact that all the current research that I have read, and have heard professionals reference indicates that Ginkgo Biloba does not improve tinnitus. But if it works for you great, but back it up before you say it will work for others.

I took it for over 6 months as have many others, and you are the only person I can think of off hand who has seen improvements from it. I'm sure there are others, so homefully they can chime in now, but I am not one of them. If you read the actual ginkgo biloba thread, you don't see a lot of success either really... I did my research and still put the faith in and took it... to no avail.

I have a little video otoscope to look into my own ears. It gives s great picture inside your ear canal. You can see the eardrum. I check for wax. Got on eBay. So happy I can see for myself what is going on.

Since the poster mentioned they have already seen several professionals, I would assume it is inner ear fullness following acoustic trauma which many of us experienced. As I assume their ear canal has been thoroughly examined by at least one of these doctors.

Could also be some tensor tympani/stapedial stuff though I am not very familiar with that pathology.

This may be a relevant thread, here where bill discusses his own ear fullness and others have experienced it.
