Acamprosate (Campral)

No it's not, even slightly? I've taken campral. I've taken ketamine. They are not remotely similar. Yes, they are both NMDA antagonists. Big deal, so is chamomile tea, go cure yourself with that.

It's an NMDA antagonist +"The drug also protected infant hamsters from brain damage induced by injections of the toxin ibotenic acid(which exacerbates excitotoxicity, the harmful over-activation of glutamatereceptors)" What happens when tinnitus first starts? Over-activation of glutamatereceptors. There could be a time-limit which is why I suggested it.

magnesium is also proven to prevent certain kinds of neural damage. glutamate storms are glutamate storms. that does not mean that magnesium has much in common with AM-101 (ketamine), or that ketamine has much in common with campral.

All I'm saying is, there may be a time limit. I would like to know if this could help with people under 12 months or 6 months or 3 months. Anyway, I'm using it and it does seem to lower the tone/pitch. I do monitor mine on a daily basis. Anyway, it does help some people, so I wouldn't call this a drug which couldn't help. I'll see in two months after I'm off of all these drugs to see if it all worked...I just can't handle 10/10 tinnitus...You would not believe how much I appreciate silence now...Jesus, I never thought I would appreciate it this much.

Daniel is tough bug. You can enter Swedish medical storage and eat it all and go out and burp and is that all :D

has anyone on the forum tried acamprosate recently? If so, was it effective was the dosage 333 MG three times a day. I read anew Indian study that showed it to be effective in reducing T and other than diarrhea and gas, apparently there are no major side effects, unlike trobalt.

Indian studies can be scams. They thought Caroverine was effective. It is not.

Acamprosate has been proven in clinical tests not to be effective for tinnitus.

Acamprosate (Campral®) is approved for the treatment of alcoholism in the U.S. and Europe. It presumably blocks excitatory glutamatergic N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors (5961) while enhancing γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated nerve inhibition (6264). However, some studies indicate that acamprosate enhances NMDA function, while others indicate that the compound enhances NMDA-induced excitability at low concentrations and suppresses it at high concentrations (6265). Other reports suggest that acamprosate has no effect on GABA-mediated currents (66), and some reports suggest that acamprosate inhibits the binding of taurine to taurine receptors (67).

One paper has been published on the use of acamprosate to treat tinnitus patients, most of whom had mild to profound noise-induced hearing loss (68, 69). The rationale for treatment assumes that tinnitus arises from excess glutamatergic activity through NMDA receptors and/or hyperactivity resulting from the loss of GABA-mediated inhibition (7075). In this double-blind study, patients received placebo or acamprosate (333 mg t.i.d.) and rated the loudness and annoyance of their tinnitus before and at monthly intervals of treatment. Acamprosate had no beneficial effects after 30 days of treatment, a modest benefit at 60 days and a significant effect at 90 days. Approximately 87% of the subjects in the acamprosate group showed some improvement, including three subjects in whom tinnitus disappeared, compared to 44% in the placebo group. A larger clinical trial is currently under way to further assess the encouraging results from this preliminary study (http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00596531).

Is there anyone that have try CAMPRAL 666mg x3 daily for three months?!

Tried it for 14 days. Didnt do anything for my T nor my benzo withdrawl. Maybe I should have stayed on it longer. Didnt know about the 90 days to have any reportable affect

Is this drug only effective in benzo w/d or is it also effective for benzo induced T? God I really do not know what medicine to begin with.

And do you guys take these drugs under a doctor's control or just like go in a pharmacy and take a box of it? I do not really want to see a doc again in my life since they ruined my whole life.

Think that: i have tinnitus for acoustic trauma and Clonazepam 2mg it's (for now) the only thing that work to quiet it... :( and clonazepam cause you Tinnitus.

You could try campral for three months under 666mg three time daily and see who happen. It's an easy medicine without collateral effect; you can try with your doctor. I have one box, and i have try it just for two weeks; short period and don't seem that work but i must try for a long period. Just before i want use perampanel and trobalt to see if something of good happen (also after suspension).

Its primary used to make alcoholics not want to drink. To deminish the urge. Its a GABA agonist and Glutumate antagonist wich sounds good, but thats all I know.

With an high probably that some brazilian reasearch are scam. (Acamprosate it's a brazilian drug...)

Doctor prescribed acamprosate and i took it for about a month or so. Study says it must be taken at least 3 months. I will have to try for 3 months then see whats up with the T. Praying for a cure....
