Tinnitus Since
02/2014
Hello All,

My tinnitus started about 3 weeks ago in my right ear predominantly but with occasional left ear inclusion. My tinnitus sounds like an amplified 'normal' tinnitus everyone has, but with a high pitched overlay which recently has been inviting additional lower frequencies to 'buzz' in and out. Moving my neck and especially my jaw forward increases the volume. The volume of the squeal is not a constant but the amplified 'background' tinnitus is. I wouldn't say that it is not massively loud but it is enough to drive me absolutely crazy. I find it odd that the left ear has started at the same time as the right but FAR less noticeable. Has anyone experienced this particular tinnitus and can you advise as to what it could possibly be? I have only just signed up to a local doctor and it will be around 2 weeks before i can get it checked out.

Thanks everyone

I got T after a root canal and now have TMJ which I think is the cause of my T....Mark what you can do for now is your Doc tell him whats going on test your hearing get an MRI ...basically do thing to rule out something physical. That in itself will let you know that your healthy then figure whats best to handle your T.
Good luck keep posting and reading lots of good info here.....

Thanks for the reply. Based on the performance of the doctors around my neck of the woods, an MRI scan is a very distant possibility and would take a LONG long time before any referral would take place. Slightly pre-emptive granted but im pretty sure i will be given anti-biotics and nasal spray as that seems to be the 'default' treatment. Wax is a possibility so i guess they will check for that too. Like i said, i have an initial appointment but it isnt until next week. It's a strange condition as it isn't a constant with me..(apart from the background noise), it fluctuated constantly, sometimes barely anything, then the next second, a high pitched scream. Very odd

Hi guys, an update. My T has gone in to a sort of 'Fluctuation' mode where it increases and decreases at random. The other day it had pretty much gone but is back at normal levels today. There is a higher pitched element to it in my right ear which sometimes sounds like morse code, very odd. Left ear is getting in on the game too :(

Mark, there was nothing that coincided with the onset if the T?

How old are you? Do you have any hearing problems?

No medical procedures or medications taken at onset?

Any chronic pain in the head or neck?

Hi applewine,

Nothing coincided from what i can remember. I'm 32 and the only hearing issues i have is this T and sometimes hearing a deep hum/vibration. Going to ENT on the 2nd of next month for a hearing test. No neck pain although neck movement does fluctuate the T. It hasn't been too bad for the for the past week but last night it increased to its normal level when i slept awkwardly.

I would also recommend having your neck examined for any tightness or strain. My uncle has T for 30 odd years now and does charity cycle races.A few weeks back he fell off his bike and injured his neck as a result and his T has flared up since his fall.A couple of visits to a chiropracter and he is doing much better now so who knows,if you slept awkwardly and it went to its normal level your neck muscles could be a contributing factor to your symptoms.

Yes i have been thinking the same. I do some neck massages and try and find trigger points recently and it dos seem to help a little. Will see what the ENT say in 2 weeks.

Hello Mark , I just read your bloggor, I have neck problems , I had whip lash a few year ago, never looked after it, recently I started physo, and my T started not sure if this is causing my problems..going to a chiropractor soon , maybe he can help. Thanks for listing ..keep in touch..let me if we have the same neck problems.

Mark it is possible to have muscle dysfunction in the SCM muscles without even feeling it. You may want to look up the SCM muscles, scalenes and other muscles in relation to trigger points and tinnitus. I don't know if you could have any muscle involvement, but you should look into it.

Hi there,

I suffer from the same type of T. The things you mention are kind off similar to mine, although my neck hurts like crazy. I also have tons of trigger points. I'm seeing a osteopat and she can influence the T,after a treatment it is almost killing, therefor I just went to the first aid to get some meds to relax my muscles. I noticed my T after I did a short bench press workout in my basement at the time that I was very tired and therefore did not pay attention to my position. I also often experience a sharp pain in my head above my sleeps. It started with a regular T right after the workout , but I noticed that the sound didn't fully dissappear.
It also fluctuates like shit throughout the day and almost every day is a different sound but it is sometimes killing and unmaskable. My osteopat clearly states I got neck issues and a problem with the left side of my jaw. I'll stay strong but it is very difficult at times when it is soo loud. I also noticed it is lower when i had a good rest and so my muscles relaxed. However if i had a good rest in an uncomfortable position for my neck it's also very painful and loud.

Anyways I advice u to perhaps see a GP or osteopat or perhaps acupuncturist. Because spasm of the muscles can trigger the nerves or something like that :p
Anyways keep your head up and best wishes, I'll keep you updated if i find any methods that will work.

Hi all thanks for the advice. Went to the ENT today. Had a hearing test and passed with flying colours which tbh didn't surprise me. The so called specialist was useless, had no idea what somatic T was. Told me I was worrying too much and most of what I'm experiencing is stress. He did state that it could be neck based and I should give it a few weeks then go back and arrange to see a physio. Usual gubbins. Didn't give me any info. I must say I've been trying to improve my posture and have had some results so let's see.
