Cause of Tinnitus
Ear wax impaction
Hi all.

So just before Xmas I stupidly stuck a cotton bud in my ear to relieve an itch. Next thing I know I've blocked my ear completely with wax. Had muffled hearing for a couple of days then I the ringing started. I kept taking otex ear drops then finally got my ears microsuctioned last on 3rd jan. The ringing greatly reduced.

Then on 8 Jan I put my head under water in the bath. Since then the ringing has returned.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar and maybe provide some good news?

Thanks

It may be a coincidence that your ears have some issues unknown to you. Water without pressure normally can't really affect your hearing or damage your normal ears, otherwise every shower we take can be risky. Diving deep with intense pressure is a different story as the rapid change of pressure can cause barotrauma which is a known cause of tinnitus.

Thank you for your reply. Do you think the cause could be the impacted eat wax, as that is when it all started? If so is tinnitus caused by ear wax usually temporary?

Thanks

There are many causes which can trigger or aggravate tinnitus including but not limited to drug side-effects from ototoxic drugs, ear wax build-up, ear-wax removal suction, inner ear infection, Eustachian tube disorder or ETD, ear drum injury, fluid build-up in ears feeling pressured or fullness, sinus infection & congestion especially with a bad cold, TMJ, TTTS, autoimmune disorders such as Lyme Disease & Fibromyalgia, high blood pressure or blood circulation problem, anemia, loud noise exposure or acoustic trauma/shock, head injury or TBI, neck injury or muscle problems, hearing loss from aging or other causes, Meniere's Decease, barotrauma from rapid pressure changes in flights or diving, especially with congested nose or sinus causing failure to balance the pressure changes, slapping of the ears, deep grief, untreated sleep apnea, extreme/extended stress, anxiety & panic disorder, depression, sleep deprivation, etc. T can also be caused or made worse by unhealthy diet such as too much salt, sugar, caffeine, MSG, alcohol etc. or by lacking some mineral or vitamin supplements, such as Magnesium, Zinc, B12, D3 etc.

Thanks for your advice. very grateful!

Do you know why it took 3-4 days for the tinnitus to develop after the ear wax compaction? Is that a sign that it may go?

Thanks again.

I would just go to an ENT doc. -- You are lucky since your T is probably caused by the wax that just needs to be cleaned out.. :)
