Advice Please with Sudden Spike

Greetings,

All of a sudden in the split of a second a central tone of mine rumped up unusually loud. In general my tinnitus had been progressive throughout the year but always gradually so I somehow managed to adjust to a part of my symptoms, with less frequent "spiral down" intervals. This sudden spike is unusual for me.

I got quite panicked and I popped 3mg of Bromazepam (Lexotanil), to control the anxiety atm. (I do not use benzos in a regular basis)

This feels a significant setback. I am not experienced in this tinnitus behavior.

Should I consider prednisone pills or a short course of Clonazepam in hopes of calm it down?

It's been my experience that spikes are temporary but can last from days to weeks. For some it's a way of life. They can be difficult to deal with as anyone who has had them can attest. The best answer, in my opinion, is to discuss any medication management with your prescribing physician.

Bromazepam calmed it down a bit, but i get this fleeting t for moments that make my ear feel clogged. It then subsides in a few seconds.

I experience this myself as does my wife. She said that she's been getting it for years prior to her own tinnitus. It may not be uncommon but the reason we notice it more is because of our tinnitus.

I'm battling a bad spike right now but think it's from stress and salt.

Going to go exercise which seems to help. -- I try to stay away from the meds since they help with sleep but usually make mine spike the next day for some reason..

I was taking .25 MG of Clonazepam a couple times a week (yes, a week) so I am probably jumping to conclusions that it spiked my T.

Must be the salt since there is nothing else bad in my diet left to give up..

I had been wondering if intermittent use of benzos could have a negative effect, now
that you mentioned it @John Meyers. There was also a very bad period when i went on a short course of diazepam (2mg) for about a week, to help my sleep. Now my benzo usage is limited once/twice per month or not at all. Bromazepam has definitely an effect on mine. Still dealing with that spike.

Have you tried taking less melatonin? Doing so might still allow you to fall asleep, but your head would be more clear when you wake up the next morning...

@Bill Bauer - yes I have Bill.
I was using a pill splitter, so just taking 1mg.
But more recently I have been using a different method.
My misus is a hypnotherapist, who recorded one of our sessions onto my iPhone.
I've been taking no meds.
I always wake up early, to noise of course, and turn on my recording.
Within seconds I am asleep again no problem.
I probably only hear just one minute of a 22 minute recording.
My clever/lovely misus tells me that the messages are absorbed subliminally, whether I am conscious or not.

Yes, I think that the meds for me is what caused my spike that has now been with me for 3 weeks.

I was okay with a noise level around 5 but now I am back up to an 8. -- We aren't supposed to monitor the noise level but it is pretty hard not to when it is in my head..

I'm going on vacation in a couple days and that usually that gets my mind off of T for most of the time. -- Maybe the airplane will make my ears pop and do some kind of miracle!

Benzos even with non regular use can cause permanent spikes for tinnitus & hyperacusis.

You must avoid benzos at all costs.

Low dose dexamethasone is a good solution for persistent spikes.

For sleep try 200mg l-theanine & calming aminoacids.

Can it last 1 month or even longer, then go back to the baseline?
