Always Stand Your Ground

Great post fishbone.

Since I have H (13 years ago), it's probably been the most difficult thing for me : to protect my ears no matter what people could think. Now I manage, but it's only because I no longer have a choice. Well, sometimes I have earmuffs and I still hate how some people will look at me...

I'm sorry your thread has been spoiled by the dental discussion, which isn't related at all to what you were writing.

At the end of the day, only YOU are going to look out for you. I was at a 4th of july party and these people were shooting off fireworks that were EXTREMELY loud and damaging to the ears. I had my DB meter on my iphone and it was scary loud. I covered both my ears, mainly because i was conversating with 2 cute gals.

One of the guys make a comment that I was a chicken, for covering my ears. He knew that I train in a no non sense martial arts..I told him that My ears are damaged and they ring. After that, he said nothing to me and showed no empathy either. I didn't expect it either, some people are rotten and have no class..so i was not surprised...

We are the ones with this LOUD, horrible ringing. Life is not a popularity contest, for me at least it's not. It's about still trying to live a simple life with the amount of hearing I have left. If people look at you funny or say anything, you should be comfortable and tell them that , their opinion means nothing and you are protecting your damaged ears.

If they still say something, simply eliminate them from your circle of friendship/influence. Our ears ring , their ears don't ring. We face this horror, they don't.

Never be ashamed to stand up for yourself in life, if it really makes an impact on your life. No matter, who likes it or doesn't like it...always stand your ground!!!

This lesson applies to all areas of life..not just tinnitus :)

If I extract my front tooth, I will look a lot more conspicuous than you ever looked while wearing Peltor muffs. Do you see how it is related now?

This front tooth story is getting ridiculous. This is not the thread.

fishbone is mainly talking about the very moment you cover your ears and people may say : "What a chicken, it's just noise !".

This very moment is a tough one for many of us H or T sufferers. There's a learning curve to be able to do that. But the sooner you learn, the better you protect your hearing (long term).

And I really hope this thread will help some people to learn that quickly : cover your ears if you need to, don't wait, not even for a second, don't think. One second might be too much.

You are talking about something entirely different. If you miss front teeth, people will look at you thinking "Jeez, get it fixed man". Yes, I agree, so what ? (doesn't mean you'll be ok with no front teeth, trust me) But there is no learning curve here. You have a lot of time to think about it, it's not a skill you are developping. It's just a one time decision.

Covering your ears when it's needed is a new skill to learn.

So start a thread about it but this is not the same thing at all.

You know what would be standing your ground ? Find the right dentist, learn about dental treatments, tools they use, time it takes, understand what is possible and what's not, if your dentist doesn't agree to try something you think is appropriate, find another dentist. Only see high-skilled dentists, some of them are root canal specialists. Expensive as hell but totally worth it. Always get several opinions. You might avoid drilling by a little surgery at the end of the root for instance. Etc.

But you're not doing that. You've just been whinning about your needed dental work for weeks, doing nothing else. So at least, go ahead and extract your front teeth now. But I'm telling you : this is not how you stand your ground. And you will never be ok with that decision.

You would freak out if I told you how much energy, time and money I had to spent to get my dental work done. I made some mistakes, I got a permanent spike from one of the last appointments (a mistake which was avoidable : my bad). But at least it's done and I stood my ground like very few people are able to.

I am worried about getting a permanent spike despite being able to secure a perfect (at most 5 seconds, 10 second break; electric-powered quieter drill) dental procedure. No matter how perfect it is, it would involve drilling, and I might still end up regretting doing the dental procedure.

I am considering taking it to the next level. Drilling my tooth to replace a filling might aggravate my tinnitus. Extracting the tooth and replacing it with a bridge, involves drilling of the adjacent teeth to make the bridge. I am considering extracting the tooth (it is one of the front teeth), and walking around with a gap where that tooth used to be. It will feel awful, but it will be better than dealing with louder T...
So what happened with your tooth. I am curious, almost a year passed.

Thanks for the reply.

A few months ago I would of thought this is absurd, but now I completley understand. My T is getting louder and louder with new tones that make me miss my origina

Hmmm, always thought I had a constant T, but have recently felt a spike after wearing my maskers for a few hours??? I agree with@Bill Bauer ; best to protect those ears as much as possible. I hope this spike resolves soon.

My TT Fam,

i was inspired to bump this post and say to all of you STAND your ground! You are the top priority. Your health/ears are the top priority. Society and it's expectations MEAN NOTHING. Be proud of yourselves for pushing everyday with tinnitus. I am one of YOU guys and you guys are like me.

Make today count, even if it's a small step, lets do this. I'm heading out to the gym and trying to distract my mind/soul from the devil (tinnitus) that is trying to rob it. It's hard at times to be so motivated, but WE can do this my dear TT fam.

Bless all that suffer!

I went and hit a heavy bag for 40 minutes yesterday and it felt so good to get some of that stress and anger out.

Thought of you and the martial arts you do at the time. Great stress reliever

Going to the gym and exercise is the best medicine! Laughter is the best medicine! Even though the ringing is insane and loud, the gym has mellowed me out and things are going ok. I encourage all to be more active and protect their ears.

When I am in the gym my martial arts buddy, comes there as well. I mentor him in weight lifting and the martial arts.

We lift for 35 minutes - 45 minutes then we cardio for 15-20.

I really love this post and topic. It's so crucial to our lives. All of us need to stand our ground. We need to let people know, that we either like something or not. Never be a silent voice and let the world and society have their ways with you. I use to be forced to go to all these parties, gatherings and I would get grief if I didn't go. It took lots of guts, courage and strength to let people know how I felt.

Always stand your ground. Always be in a situation that makes YOU feel comfortable. Never let ANYONE make you feel bad or make your tinnitus feel worst. I fight the good fight, for the good people of this world. The innocent people of this world. I am your voice, I am your warrior!

I hope you find strength in my posts, I find strength in reading many of yours :)
