As a lot of you may know by now, I've been suffering with varying degrees of tinnitus since 2011.
As of the last few months I began noticing pains in my neck and shoulder that came and went at random after a sudden noise exposure.
At first I put it down to stress and tension and after a visit to my doc I was reassured it was just that, given Diazepam 4mg daily and hey presto I was ok again, that was until late January when the pain returned and stayed and over night my tinnitus worsened seven fold and then came along extreme hyperacusis.
It's now been confirmed that the pain is indeed coming from my ears and spreading into my neck and back.
After a chat with my specialist whose heavily involved with UCL and a hearing test that showed a poor response of outer haircells in my left ear although this has been deemed inconclusive as my ear muscles are tightening to nearly every sound[TTTS] and may be skewing the results, I put it to him about the possibility of AM-101 being used to treat hyperacusis also?
As we know AM-101 is basically Esketamine, a well known anesthetic that works on NMDA receptors to block pain signals being sent to the brain and after reading the latest research on hyperacusis there appears to be pain nerve cells in the inner ear also.
I have spoken to a few individuals with hyperacusis who received a Lidocaine injection and hey presto their hyperacusis was gone.
Whether it was permanent or not I do not know but this would indicate that AM-101 could be hugely beneficial to hyperacusis patients.
I'm considering getting the drug as my specialist may be able to get me into the trial with of course Auris knowing that I've had extremely mild tinnitus up until two weeks ago.
I'm expecting a call from them tomorrow but I would like a few opinions on this before I go ahead and do it.
