Amitriptyline, Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, etc

a doctore prescribed Amitriptyline because of the bad thoughts I have and my general psychological state. I have been prescribed antidepressants for years, but never used them, after a good friend of mine warned against them. I always dealt really well with chronic depression, prior to tinnitus that was a walk in the park in comparison. Now I found out that Amitriptyline is a drug that actually has a chance to ease tinnitus. I learned that as a 'tryciclic' (at first I thought it meant you feel as if pedalling 3 bycicles at once ) that these are the drugs with the most side effects. The doctor prescribed a stack of them (got 3 packets). For now I won't take them, but soon or later I will have to experiments with all these damn drugs. I think it's best if I start with the ones of the 're-uptake' type, as these have less side effects.I will tell this to the doctor and get the other drugs first.

I don't know. A huge fear I have is that I have read that for some people the tinnitus got WORSE. If so, for me it would be over. I am already going through a f***** huge struggle, as so many of us here.

I am trying to find attendible research about these drugs. One is http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11771024 , which several of you know about, but how do I get the whole paper?

Any other thoughts, advice, opinions, etc, more than welcome. Wish you well to you all.

All of these drugs are a crap shot. Goggle any drug, you'll find people who swear it helped their tinnitus, and people who will swear it caused it or made it worse.

You are so right...every EVERY drug same story, helped to deal with my t, lowered my t, or even cured mu t.
Others for the same drug: Using that drug cause my t, using that drug increased my t, withdrawal of that drug cause my t.

But conclusion is what? We do not have one, all is possible...it depends of every individual.

Yup, my only understanding despite many hours of reading, is that drugs are unpredictable and should be approached with knowledge and caution.

If someone is inclined to explore the chemical options for tinnitus, I think it behooves them to control as many variables as possible, which for me means not combining drugs suddenly, if at all.

I know that for me, benzos decrease the intensity and unpleasantness of t, and most other classes of drugs either do nothing at all, or make it worse. Benzos definitely have the potential to be ototoxic.

I took paroxetine ( 1 per day) for 1 year. No effect on T but it permit me to be myself again. .

I read what people say too, but I only really trust research made like in the link I mentioned....still don't understand why I can't find the full paper.

That stuff knocked me out. I thought Nortriptyline was better for nerve pain?

Benzos definitely have the potential to be ototoxic.

I have been on clonazepam for over 2 years. It has not worsened my H or T. I have tried alot of other drugs. Flexeril works well for all symptoms.



Opiates make my H and T temporarily worse. Amitrip did nothing to my T or H.

Some say opiates make their T better. It is all a crapshoot. However opiates also affect my cns big time, I get anxiety on them..perhaps that is why my ears worsen..I don't know.

actually ami is usually go-to for pain but some cant tolerate the s/e and try nortrip instead (what ami converts to)..both are used for nerve pain, particularly "burning sensation" nerve pain or migraine headaches.

Great..well many Neurologists need updating. Re TN I have no idea. ATN most use Ami.

By user experience alone Nortrip is less effective on migraine and facial pain.

I will add my ex's t worsened significantly to T on ssri and returned to baseline t (one he doesn't notice unless he looks for it) when he disconti ued.

I agree with @linearb: chemical treatments of tinnitus (or any drug, especially those involving your central nervous system and/or brain) need to be approached with great caution -- and used under a doctor's supervision. But I think in some instances, they can be helpful. Even life saving. I find it alarming that people buy this stuff over the Internet (when you never know what the heck you are getting in that capsule), and dose themselves according to what someone said on a forum.

I also agree that everyone is very different when it comes to these medications What worked for me may do nothing for you. If you have a qualified a doctor whom you trust, the best thing to do is follow his or her advice, aim for the lowest effective dose possible, and monitor your side effects carefully.

And I think many ototoxic claims are over-hyped in online forums. In most cases, if the drug makes your tinnitus louder, it will go back to baseline when you stop taking it. If indeed it was even the drug causing the problem.

I am more confused than ever. My doctor prescribed Elavil when I asked for a muscle relaxant because I think I might have a TMJ problem.

I got the drug from the pharmacy, but decided not to take it after reading the possible side effects. Today I saw my doctor again and proposed that I try a non-tryciclic drug, as the antidepressant he prescribed has too many side effects.

His reply was 'Elavil is not an antidepressant, it is used to relieve pain'. So I thought, 'ok, I must be mistaken'. Went back home, checked the Elavil instruction, checked drugs.com, checked wikipedia: Elavil is an antidepressant.

Either I am crazy, or doctors don't know what the hell they are talking about. The second scenario hardly surprises me. I am now very suspicious of doctors.

This is really sad. It looks like you just can't count on them for anything. They don't get anything, they take 30 years do get anything done, and they are crap.
