Cause of Tinnitus
showering using local water supply
I'll just start with a bit of background. My tinnitus is a hissing sound which I had for about 8 years and was definitely caused when having showers. I live in a mobile home which is connected to an undrinkable water supply and I noticed that after a shower I had the hissing in my ears. Not realising the implications, after several more showers the hissing did not stop. I read up a bit on the Internet and did what most of you have no doubt done, I take gingko biloba tablets daily and stopped having caffeine. I have visited ear specialists, the first saying, "everybody has it, nothing can be done". The second prescribed Tanakene, a gingko biloba liquid.

During this period I have endured temporary changes in tone, but more frequently changes in volume. Again, no doubt many of you have a measurement system for volume, I use 1-10, 2 being the level at which I can focus on other things and 'not hear' the tinnitus (sometimes it is even quieter hence the option for volume 1). I have several times during the past year been up to 7. Hence I have also been prescribed 'Alprazolam' to chemically keep me calmer when the volume becomes intolerable.

Now the possibles. I recently had a pain in the back and I was prescribed a double injection of an anti-inflammatory and vitamin B for three days. On the second day my tinnitus went down to a level 1 for over 24 hours and was virtually unnoticeable. I missed day 3 and went for the 3rd injection on day 4, but was convinced the resulting improvement may have been from the vitamin B so began taking B complex in tablet form daily. I have not got any further progress to report, because events overtook this test. I had another problem in my head and went to see a neurologist who, after diagnosis, prescribed 'Tryptizol' for the problem but added, "It will also improve your tinnitus." After 1 week I am happy that my T is going through a stable period and am optimistic that the three or four month prescription may result in noticeable improvement.

If not, I will go back to the vitamin B, which I have suspended whilst on this medication. I will add further comments of any improvements or otherwise.

hi davetheace,
how is your T after taking tryptizol? any how long have u been taking that so far?

Hi Thongjy, as I said in my post, I've been taking Tryptizol for a week, now 9 days. I've taken no other aid other than my continued daily gingko biloba tablets and I've only had one days not so good. Most of the time it's been volume level 2 (don't hear if focussed on something else), a couple of times level 3 (ignorable) and once level 5 (very uncomfortable) for most of the day. This could simply be a normal period of moderate T and I won't have a fair judgement until after a month I think. My past month has had a lot of ups and downs so a month with the volume level pretty stable would be a fair time to cast judgement.

Just to be clear, Tryptizol is Amitripyline, otherwise known as Elavil. This is an old tricyclic antidepressant that has long been prescribed for tinnitus. Apparently it helps some. I have taken it in low doses (10mg) as a sleep aid. While this was long before I developed tinnitus, I wonder if, in part, it is the sleep inducing properties of the drug that allow it to help some cope with their tinnitus. In my case, I take Mirtazapine (a tetracyclic antidepressant), which gives me wonderful sleeps and, in turn, allows me to deal better with my tinnitus.

@DavetheAce: what dosage of Tryptizol are you prescribed?

As for B-vitamins, I believe I will take a complex subject to my doctor signing off on it.

Tryptizol is a weird drug.
Potassium channel blocker (bad), sodium and calcium blocker (good).
Hit and miss for tinnitus really.

I wasn't prescribed Tryptizol for T, I was prescribed it for another reason. In prescribing, the doctor added that it should also improve my T. I'm optimistic.

10mg, 1 a day, 2 hours before bedtime, and yes the doctors view is that I suffer from a "tension headache". Not that I need it for sleep, but it has already reduced the pressure inside my head.

How much ginko did you take per day?
How many dose per time?
How many times daily?
What is the cause of your T?

I have to apologise again for a delayed reply, not intentional I can assure you.
I was unable to find a guide as to what strength or quantity of Gingko would be helpful to T, but it was quoted as being helpful.
I take one 500 mg tablet before bedtime. When my T is louder, then I supplement this with Tanakene (a gingko liquid), 2ml mixed with water at bedtime and again when I get up. I cannot state for certain that the tablet helps, I CAN state for certain that when adding the Tanakene it has successfully dropped the volume 1 or 2 points in the evening before bedtime.
The cause of my T was showering in a local water supply, presumably causing an infection or damage which has never recovered.

I have only a few more days before completing the first month of the prescribed Trypizol 10mg (one daily, with food, 2 hours before bedtime). I remind interested readers that in terms of T volume I consider 2 to be a level that I can easily focus on other things and am unaware of it. For the 30 days prior to commencing my prescription the average was a touch under 2.6. This included 4, 4, 4, 5 and 7, but only included two 1s. The 27 days average since I started is a touch less than 2. This included one 4 and twelve 1s. Evidently the results are not scientific and Tryptizol hasn't 'cured' my T. But if I was offered the chance to reduce my T by 25%, then I and many others would say yes please.
As additional information, the two 1s in the preceding month, followed 2 daily injections of Inzitan 2ml and Diclofenaco LLorens 75mg. I was advised that one was an anti-inflammatory, the other vitamin B. Inzitan contains thiamine and I am convinced this was the ingredient that resulted in the reduced T volume level. I have resisted the temptation to take vitamin B during the prescription period as I wanted to test the effects of Tryptizol solely. I will probably resist for a while longer as I will be interested to see whether Tryptizol has a cumulative effect and improves my T further. I hope these experiences are helpful to others.

@DavetheAce Can you tell me what is Tanakene?? Is it this?
