Anyone Else Have Ultra-High Frequency Tinnitus?

Cause of Tinnitus
Stress
I'm fairly new to T (7 weeks) and I have 3 noises (it started as one, then 5-6, now 3ish, keeps changing).

The one I am really having trouble with is the ultra-high frequency electric noises running through my head and ears. I can almost feel them if that makes sense. I can't mask it with phone apps because of the frequency, even though my hearing is good. My T must be stress-induced.

I was just wondering if anyone else has this type of T, and what you do/did to try to get used to it or even mask it if at all possible?

I suffer with all types of frequency but I do have high pitch ones constantly ringing in my ear. Unfortunately I have not found anything to help. There are online sites that can play high pitch white noise in to your ears whilst wearing headphones but the relief is very short lived. I'm going to get my hearing tested soon as my friend thinks my phone volume is so loud where's I struggle to hear people talking, so I know that my hearing has started to fail. I'm only 33 and find it worrying. I'm worried that I'll lose my hearing and only be left with tinnitus sounds.

I'm a little younger than you @Lia so I know how you feel. I thought my hearing was to blame but I got it checked twice and it came back that my hearing is very good, so I have to put mine down to stress. I'm seeing the audiologist again this week and will ask about seeing a neurologist. Hopefully some of the older members will have some tips for this type of T, it's like electric circuits firing throughout the brain. Really hope your T gets better.

Hi @Telis, I've had two hearing tests and both came back as no hearing loss. Not sure what type they were, but it was basically listening to tones at varying pitches (very low to very high) and clicking a button to say I could hear them, even if only faintly. Is there another hearing test I should ask for? I know I can hear my ultra-high tone (which seems around 15,000 Hz) from just listening to an online tone generator. I've not had much else checked aside from an ENT looking in my ears quickly and that was it. He didn't do anything else.

I have this slso. It is unmaskable without a doubt. I play all sorts of cricket apps on my iPhone. I even bought an extra iPhone the other day just so I could have crickets on both sides. The crickets do drown it out a bit, so makes it a torch more bearable. Your only option is to stay busy and distracted through the day and to avoid quiet rooms (this is impossible I know). I've had the bad tinnitus since 1st Jan. Also I think classical music can help. And going for a shower.

@Paul10 have a high pitch hiss that almost feels like a head vibration at times.

I use an ear masker with a sshhh noise which takes the edge off, keep it for emergencies so I feel I've got something to fall back on and don't feel trapped with the sound. Doesn't work if I use it for too long etc, but a few hours on a bad day. If I use the same noise on the pc it does not mask but in ear for some reason it does. I still hear the shhh from the device plus my t noise together making a slightly stronger shhh but not as sharp as my noise alone...

Good advise thanks. I also find a hair dryer seems to kind of mask, but I don't think the rest of my house would be too happy with me walking about with a hair dryer blasting all day :-/

I haven't actually tried headphones (been kind of afraid thus far) so I'll see about giving that a go, thanks!

By the way, just to add to my previous response, if you bought that iPhone new I would bring it back if you can and get yourself a pair of Sound Oasis sleep therapy pillow speakers instead. I use them to plug into my iPhone, they have two speakers which can be put at either side of your pillow and a long cable to keep your iPhone on a cabinet or something.

Hi @Paul10 these are hearing aids with noise, no hearing function, just noise. They are given by the NHS in the UK under the supervision of an audiologist, so they're not headphones, can only be set to a certain volume etc.

Thanks; I'm from N. Ireland and am seeing someone through our health service also but she's very reluctant to give maskers as she wants me to habituate. Wish I could have something even for an hour. I'll run it by her today. Thanks!

Have tou tried masking apps? White/Purple noise are great when you want a break from it.
Yeah tried all sorts, it's just too high a frequency to be masked. I haven't tried with headphones through so I think I'll give that a go and see if it helps a bit

Yep, super hi freq head buzz here as well. Actually to be specific its probably a number of close freq , making this sort of wall of hi freq bzzzzzzz.

I have a high frequency mixed in, it's around 12.5khz ish. It's hard to pin down to an exact frequency, but it's really high pitched, shrill and can be heard over almost anything.

Mine is very high pitched pulsitile. On good days, it's like faint crickets I can live with. On bad days, like today, it's extremely hard to ignore, mask, or not react to.

Mines a sheet of white noise at everything above 13khz, it's piercing but can barely hear it in the fresh air, at night or in silence it turns into a monster tho, also moving my neck sometimes brings on a high pitch tone in my left ear that i would kill myself if it stuck

I've got a number of different frequencies but I sometimes get a rush of extremely loud T at very high frequency which fades after about 20 seconds. At first I panicked but after a few rushes (which I get maybe once or twice a month, usually when I'm very stressed out or have held my neck in a poor position for a long period) I realised it is transient and will fade back to normal T.

Strangely enough, since I started taking Lyrica I haven't had a single episode of this rush of T - but I've had to come off Lyrica due to the fact it worsened my T generally. Go figure.

Without wanting to diagnose you in any way, I'd suggest monitoring your stress levels to see if this has any influence on your perception of T frequency.

My tinnitus is not hearing loss related and is at 12.5 kHz. It is constant 24/7 for just over a month now. It is unmaskable because it is very loud. The volume required to mask it is so loud that I could only stand it for a few minutes. When my tinnitus started it was around 9.7 kHz and noticeable mainly at night. At the higher frequency it is very disruptive. At this point I am just learning how to cope with it.

I had extensive hearing testing done with a ATA audiologist and my hearing is exceptional and extends well beyond the range of my tinnitus.

I don't know what you mean by extensive testing, but if you're talking about an audiogram you should know that it doesn't show what is commonly called "hidden hearing loss" (google it for more info).
It's possible to have a perfect audiogram and yet have a damaged hearing apparatus (one of the BTA videos explains this, but there are other explanations you will find online).

@GregCA, I can't rule out a "hidden hearing loss". However, I can hear frequencies around the range of my tinnitus without issue. The sound just needs to be in a pattern and not constant so that I can recognize it as distinct from the constant tinnitus.

I have a high pitched (sometimes pulsating) tinnitus in both ears. Mine screeches at around 12khz. NOTHING masks it, but I do get some relief for about 10 seconds or so when I come out of the shower.
