Anyone Here Taking a Drug to Help Stop Obsessing Over Tinnitus? If So, Which One?

Tinnitus Since
6/2006
I was doing pretty good but have had a few relapses. I don't really want to take an anti-obsession drug, but if worse comes to worse I might. The past few days I was focusing on it a lot. The problem is I have depression issues and when I get down I can focus on it. If I can knock the volume down by 50% or more I am usually okay. I have an experiment that I am going to try and I guess I will know by tomorrow morning if the T will drop. If not, I might have to look into medication.

Prozac is used for OCD, have you tried that?

No, I am consumed by T every second of the day.
The reality is starting to set in after 5 months.

I can't listen to music, can't relax, can't sleep, can't go to restaurants or bars, can't go to cinema, cant enjoy driving, can't go on holiday anymore or fly in a plane, If I lose my business I don't know if I can work. I'm seriously depressed and nothing I can do to fix it. I won't take drugs.

I don't look forward to the future and every morning I wake up after only a short sleep with a redicilious panic attack which feels like I'm drowning.

I know I am going to kill myself.

@Jason C seems like there is more going on than just tinnitus. From the things you say you can't do, is it hyperacausis you also have?

Have you seen an ENT?

I had hyperacusis in the first few months but it has faded a lot now. The reason I cant listen too music is that the music now sounds distorted and broken, even watching tv with some music in it.
If I go to a restaurant with even low music playing and normal conversation my t boosts and stays up for days. I am literally disabled now.

Made appointment for ent months ago.. still waiting, it will be a waste of time anyway, nothing can help this.

Hi Jason - where are you based in the UK, is there a local support group? You need to tell the GP to refer you urgently to the Audiologist, independently of ENT. Then you can get some tips and sample Wearable Noise Generators.
You can and you will get some of those things back...

Hi Candy

Northern Ireland which means the NHS and even private medical services are worse than useless.

The T isnt the main issue for me. The distortion in music and other sounds is the main issue, this is due to damage in the inner ear which cannot be repaired.

The depression is due to my life being destroyed by this. Nothing can fix that.

That's it.

There is a Tinnitus day in Belfast soon, have a look at the BTA.

Distortion of sound - have you done some research on this, does it improve like H? Is it part of H?

Depression is because your life as you knew it is no longer there at the moment. You are facing a new reality and you will build a life that will still be worth living again. x

Hang in there Jason. There are no magic pills or potions for this unfortunately. I have tried just about every prescription medication for the stresses and anxiety but all in all, it comes down to just getting used to this racket we hear.

The only thing I use now is a 3mg Melatonin supplement about half hour before bed to help me get into a deeper sleep. Sleep and diet are most important now. So is focusing on other things that take your mind off of this noise even for a bit. Get outdoors more and just live your life. Some exercise is awesome treatment for stress. You don't need to pump iron or jog 20 miles, just go for a walk or small jog, bike ride, whatever...... Some people found getting a pet dog or cat has been a wonderful distraction too.

The odd time life throws a spin back at me and I do have left over Diazepam 5mg tablets that I can take for a couple days if I'm really stressed out. Gotta be so careful with this stuff tho. Once in a blue moon they can't hurt.

Stay strong Jason. Don't let this all tear you down.

No it's not hyperacusis it's frequency damage in the Cochela. They are dead and gone so therefore the frequencys cannot be heard in music etc

A life where I am basically a Prisioner in my house is not a life worth living.

Mike I really appreciate your support here but this is something I have already made my mind up on.

For not getting to sepressed I use an ad. for sleep sometimes melatonine 3mg.
Since the T can't be treated I've chosen to do cbt to help me to get over the tinnitus syndrom because the T affects the total of my being.

Fair enough Jason however we all wish you would continue to battle this with us. You do what you deem best.

Remember, I am COMPLETELY DEAF, and have raging tinnitus in both ears. Can't even make a phone call to my doctor!! I just push on...............

I hope you can reach out in your community for support first. I am not going to babysit the issue nor act like I know everything. Just hate to see anyone give up too soon. Hugs my friend!

I know our are deaf Mike and I am sure you would rather be in my position than you own.

I dont know how you do it.

I can hear voices and everything else perfectly well, traffic etc talk on the phone, it's just music or anything with a lot of frequencies. I have no issues with understanding speech. Obviously the ringing tries to compete with everything and if I go anywhere slightly noisey the t rings loud for ages. Then the balance issues on top of that too.

I know Jason and no, I would not trade places with anyone. I have finally accepted everything pretty much and can now slowly take my time to seek treatments to help. Your issues are very real and just as devastating. Don't let this keep you a prisoner in your home too long. Join a club and work out some. Go for a swim if they have a pool. Take a drive down the country roads or to the beach and watch the waves..... anything....... to get you out of the 4 walls that close in on yea.

The Jason thread......
This thread was started by @JasonP who wants to know which drugs to use, and then there is @Jason C who refuses to take any drugs. The first Jason has had tinnitus for a decade and was plagued with anxiety and depression issues before tinnitus emerged (I think). I have no experience or knowledge with these medications @JasonP but I hope you find someone who can help you with your question.

The second Jason is the one I more closely identify with.....

@Jason C ,
Every time I read your posts I have to wipe away tears. Your words deliver me back to that awful time when I just did not want to go on with my broken life. Mine is not just a hearing loss, it is a hearing screw up. I get feedback with every sound I hear. At the five month mark, reality was setting in and my anxiety and depression were peaking. At around eighteen months, I was starting to habituate and at three years, I am still in the process of habituating. My brain is rewiring, focusing more on sound and less on the feedback. There are still peaks and valleys.
This is life altering and there is no sugar coating that. Many illnesses are life altering. I lead a more quiet life now. I choose quieter hobbies, quieter restaurants, smaller and more intimate gatherings when I can. I accept that a certain level of pain or discomfort may be here to stay. A psychologist is the only doctor who helped me with this whole mess and I wonder if you have tried psychotherapy. There is a chance that your reaction to music will become less painful and frightening over time. Please give your brain more time to adjust.

It is depressing for sure.

You are a good man Mike.
