Gotten tinnitus from a neck/jaw issue, had mild TMJ. My neck feels week and like it has an impingement or it disconnects...

Would a neck brace help???

@Mathew Gould Sometimes the neck spine - C1 -C2 disc area could have some responsibility to a TMJ problem. A TMJ problem could also make muscles in the neck sore. In your situation it may be the later.

From conversations you have said that things are greatly improving. Keep your worries down. You are young and you have mentioned that you didn't hurt your neck. A neck brace is sometimes used to support an injured c spine or fractures. Using a neck brace should be advice given from a doctor and they often prefer the use of a neck brace to be limited in daily use.

The c1-c2 sounds like in the area of my problem. Can this problem go away on its own?? Should I be doing physical therapy or is there some stretches I could do. Its gotten better also over 5 months, but only a little. I still have lost motion in my neck and it feels weak. My neck can't even be cracked by a chiropractor anymore... Today I had no ringing and I listened to music on head phones (not loud) and buzzing came back for about 1 hour then went basically away.

^ I would recommend that you stop listening to music through headphones, for the time being.

I don't have them up loud.. I did it the other night and my T went up for like 1 hour, but came down to barely noticeably again. Headphones usually don't effect my T, bc I don't have them loud.

Bump...

Yeah should I do PT on my neck, go back to the dentist and have them try to adjust my splint, or go to the T retraining center in my city?? My neck is def not right.

Hi @Mathew Gould

I suspect you may have seen the paper written by someone who solved his t using a neck brace? If not, you can read it here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4803736/. We followed this line of enquiry, but found there is some controversy over the use of braces making the neck weaker. And if your neck muscles are already weak, which seems to be common in t from what I have read, then a physio may be reluctant to fit one for you.
However, it seems that in the reported case results were obtained very quickly, using the collar for very short periods of time, so you may be able to persuade a friendly physio if you make this clear. We thought it would be worth a try, as my son's t is very loud and pretty unchanging generally.

I also found Sarah Michiels at the University of Antwerp. She is a physio specialising in cervicogenic somatic tinnitus - see https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/staff/sarah-michiels/ and uses general neck strengthening exercises to help t.
A PT local to you can give you similar exercises to do to help your neck.

Personally I would definitely do the PT to strengthen the neck. While you are there you could ask them if they'd be willing to fit a collar to see if it helps the t. If your neck feels wrong, then it seems like that should make sense.

But it sounds like things are going pretty well, with the tone reducing and disappearing? Do you not think you might be on the right track anyway with your chiropractic treatment?

Btw what country are you based in Mathew?

Kind regards
Shirley

Yes physical therapy can very much help if you have loss of motion. A neck brace is counterproductive when used to much because it will further destabilize the neck and causes even more loss of motion. Really if your neck feels weak i would at least try physical therapy. They can also check if something is wrong with the spine or not to some extend.

Tmj and neck isues are quite complex. Not only because of possible spinal problems. But also because of the complexity in the muscles in that particular area. The muscles in the neck have the most sensors (for ex. The golgi tenson sensor) compared to any other muscle in the body. Thus a problem in tmj can easily cause problems in neck and visa versa.

Mathew, I have a fused neck, and can't sleep on my side. I wear a chin strap, night guard, and soft neck collar. The neck collar does help in reducing my neck pain, but does create a higher separate tinnitus tone when it pushes against the base of my mandible. I also wear the neck collar in the car and when I work a little in the garage. I use less pain meds because I wear the collar. Hope this helps. Keep your chin up!
