ATA-Funded Research: Making an Impact and Moving Towards a Cure

Good stuff, @jazz. One of those projects sounds a lot like the one taking place at U of Minnesota soon (cortical stimulation.) Seems like the ATA has some novel research on the docket focused on real medical treatments. Very exciting!

So 2 magneetic stimulation studies which we already know is not very effective for tinnitus - temporary reduction at best (nobody ever cured yet).
1 study about the benefits of exercise on tinnitus.
1 study about a new drug that could prevent tinnitus...roadmap to a cure?

There's a whole industry of research for research sake going on. Many hours spent producing scientific papers that get added to the archives and never read, preventative tinnitus drugs will have very little use. They would be better off promoting hearing protection.
What we all need is research leading to real and effective treatments that have an impact on the condition, in the form of drugs or otherwise.

The stark reality is 30 years or more of research has led to nothing more than TRT/CBT and all its shortcomings.

This really is a huge problem. You can research anything and find an investor looking for a tax break. We need research looking for curative results, not nonsense like how exercising helps one cope with tinnitus. How about a proactive approach and trying to treat the condition.

Useless, absolutely useless.

In my opinion all are a waste of time and money except the drug study. Who cares about the exercise study....we really need money spent on that...and as our other member stated the magnetic stimu study was already done and of very little value....why keep casing something that does not work.

Comon ATA...stop asking me for donations if this is how you are going to spend your money. Please spend the money only on drug studies....everything else is a waste.

My opinion only....if you agree with me....please feel free to explain why?

Well research is unpredictable, that's the basis of scientific research. You can't say for sure that one way of researching a cure is the only way :) there are drugs being research but what if they don't lead anywhere

The cure, if there ever will be one, will come about through the research centres of the big drug companies, not ATA or BTA. There is a massive financial incentive and an almost infinite patient base for a drug that will be effectively the only treatment available to millions.

Too much money has been wasted on spurious research projects like this

http://www.tinnitus.org.uk/caffeine-abstinence-and-tinnitus

Does caffeine abstinence affect tinnitus? Pointless. I contacted BTA about this before the trial went ahead telling them it was going nowhere. If you want to know if coffee or tea drinking makes tinnitus worse, stop drinking it. They could have done the same with red wine. Needless to say, BTA didn't bother to respond.
