Bactrim, an Antibiotic — Ototoxic?

Wished I could help you here, Mike, but all I know about this drug is that it is a sulfa drug (sulfonylurea).

For what it's worth, this drug is listed as a class 2 drug (class 1 being the least ototoxic, and class 5 the most) in my ototoxic drug book. Ototoxic side effects are tinnitus and dizziness.

With that said, I guess it is crap shoot to see if it bothers you or not.

I was given Bactrim DS last year Sept 2012 I took it twice a day for 5 days my T stayed the same...but again it could be different with others. My T was noise induced by the way.

I had to go to ER last Sat because of a open sore bacterial infection on my ankle, I am a diabetic so Dr said I need to be treated that night to avoid getting gang green.

They gave me Bactrim-DS 800 160mg. Well I took one the first Sat night, T had been blasting for 4 day's. The next day T was still high, took 2 more on Sunday, T still high. Then on Monday my ear has been quiet as a mouse, it is still very low, the level I could live with easily, been like this now for 6 days. I have had cycles of T before where I can go 5-7 days of low T. Anyway I checked and Bactrim is for bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, ear infections, enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine) I have had T for three years now. My ankle is better but not healed up. I will go see my GP Monday. I just thought it was interesting that they use it to treat ear infections due to bacteria, and after taking it for two days my Low T is making me feel like I used to feel 3 years ago. Sure would be nice if a bacterial infection is/was my problem all along.

I really doubt it though, it's to far fetched to even think that could be the problem. I can't see how someone could have a bacterial infection that long. Anyway at least I know it is one antibiotic I can take if needed, I finish them up tomorrow.

That's great, hope your tinnitus stays low for good. Maybe you have accidentally found something that may help some of us, tinnitus is the strangest thing......
Hi ML, that would sure nice, I actually doubt it, but if I can go 4 more day at this level, that would be the longest (10 days in a row) I have ever gone with low/mild T. Maybe once a month I go 4-or 5 days in a row mild then it back to the jet engine for 8-10 days in a row, then a few low days, then back up again. Thank you for the good wishes....

I've taken Bactrim DS on two occasions, once for 4 weeks, second time for two and experienced no adverse effects. T behaved as it usually does --some good days with hardly any ringing, then some days when it is loud and noticeable.

@gary did it stay low Gary?

I was just prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. Wondering if anyone here has had any issues with Bactrim affecting their T? I'm crossing my fingers it has no effect ...

I see that my new post was transferred as a reply to this one. Looks like Bactrim has not hurt anyone on this thread,so that's good to know. Would still love to hear other experiences!

Just wanted to report back in case anyone searches this topic in the future - I am currently finishing up my 7-day course of Bactrim and it has had zero effect on my tinnitus!

I am very scared - I have a sore on my toe that looks bad and doctor prescribed bactrim. I have taken one tablet and my tinnitus is loud but it was loud prior to taking, just don't want to make it worse. Can someone please give me some real-life experiences. I feel like such a sissy over this noise that still drives me batty.....God bless all of you folks - douglas

I recently used Bactrim and it did modulate my T but it went back to baseline once I stopped.

Thank-you. Mine is already super loud. I really do not need something making it worse. How bad did it affect you?

Thank-you. - How much were you affected by this antibiotic - how loud?

P.S. If talking about it aggravates you and or your tinnitus I understand - douglas
