You need to insert them pretty good with the thingy that comes with it. It gets softer after a while. You'll probably get used to them in a while. You can find different sizes and brands, but it's soft so you're probably just not used to it.

About the breathing, you're overthinking here. if you go stand in a quiet room I bet you can hear your breathing. if you pay attention to it, you're hearing it. It can't harm you.

best,
Zug

Yes they are so soft. And yes there is a " thingy" that came with it...not sure how to use that. And the instructions don't show how to use it. Hmmmm

So the sound of my breathing loud is not occlusion.? sigh...
I may be overthinking.
Life used to be simple. Then I got t.

The thingy is to help you insert the plugs into your ears. the outer end of the plug fits in the thingy. Then you pull up your ear a bit with one hand, and with the other you insert the plug with the thingy.

It's easy, you'll get used to it in no time.

Yes, the increased volume of your breathing is indeed occlusion. As I mentioned earlier, unless you're going to be yelling or talking quite loudly, it's a non-issue because the internal noises amplified by the occlusion effect won't be loud enough to cause any concern. As for the type of protection, 3m peltor plugs (you can get these at the store), they will provide more protection than the Alpine plug/ear muff combination as well as not making you look ridiculous (not looking silly is always a plus in my book).

As Zug said, you're definitely overthinking it. All internal noises will be louder with earplugs in (occlusion), but you seem to be focussing on them in a hyper-vigilant way. The sound of your breathing will not harm you in any way.

Your choices are to persist with Alpines by using the plastic applicator to twist and push the plugs into your ears; you could try foam plugs, or you could wear your ear muffs. Don't worry about how others see you, it's your life and what other people think is totally irrelevant. However, from my experience, people don't really care all that much.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you for reminding me.

I've been trying them and practicing putting them on. So just to be clear, using the alpines, I can hear normal all the sounds. The only difference is that I can here t. louder and I can hear my voice loud.

These earmuffs are incredible, they really turn all sounds down! And of course I hear t so loud. sigh.

I haven't used earplugs in 3 years.
Thank you again for all your help. You are all so kind.
