I would like to introduce myself. My name is Katie, but you can call me Kat.
Yes, I am 26 and have tinnitus. I wear hearing aids from Miracle Ear, and they truly are a miracle! I was born with congenital hearing loss in my left ear, but I have no hearing loss in my right ear. However, I have had tinnitus for as long as I can remember, since the day I was born.
School was very difficult for me. My tinnitus was so bad that I could barely concentrate on my exams or homework. I was in speech therapy for five years in elementary school, and learning to read was a real struggle. I just had to keep going because there was no technology to help me. I had to find ways to cope, like ignoring the sound and distracting myself with activities. Without hearing aids, that was my only option.
In 2024, I decided to look up hearing aids for tinnitus, and I was shocked to find out that the technology existed! I worked hard, and when I felt ready, I went to Miracle Ear. I cried in the office. I knew my hearing was bad, but I never fully understood how bad until December 2024. I learned that I am missing 27 frequencies out of 48. My tinnitus is no joke. My doctor can actually see it.
I just cried. But now I have hearing aids, and they are helping me so much. My speech has improved dramatically, I have more energy, and I can finally hear what people are saying in my left ear. I am also exercising the left side of my brain, which I was not doing at all before.
It has been an incredible experience, and I just want to thank all the doctors and scientists who made this possible for people like us. It really does get better!
