Botox 70% Success Rate as a Tinnitus Treatment!?

I had Botox injections in my masseters because I was having a tinnitus sound whenever I was clenching my teeth. The Botox did fix the problem. I'm serious.
Interesting, I get that too. It's a completely new sound when I bite down, and it's only on my left side.

Yes, please keep us posted if it changes anything.
Will do!

But just to be clear, I do it for TMD and nerve pain. Not for tinnitus and hyperacusis.

That being said, these issues are often closely related to tinnitus and the likes. So it might impact it... Only time will tell.

Thanks @MindOverMatter. While I think my cervical injuries play a bigger part, apparently I have some jaw issues that I'm not aware of. I have had Bruxism for decades and my physical therapist has identified patterns of tension and inflammation in my jaw I guess I'm just not tuned into because other areas like my neck are more painful. We will see. I can't even locate anyone in my area who does Botox for TMJ.

Hi @IntotheBlue03 - I have similar issues. I now massage all those tight areas on a daily basis, and it's pretty amazing how much of that tension and pain can be worked out. Only takes a minute or so. Another thing to consider is to learn how to do a few simple acupuncture points. I've found it to be very helpful as well.

@IntotheBlue03, Botox procedure went well.

I had a total of 8 injections; upper SCM, masseter and temporalis.

One week in tomorrow, and the full effect is expected from day 7. Effects will normally increase from then and 2 months or so ahead.

Too early to say too much about the effects, but I'm definitely more relaxed. And when my jaw and neck are more relaxed, my tinnitus and sensitivity also eases. No side effects, other than some headache.

I definitely have a somatic component in relation to tinnitus and hyperacusis.

How are you now?

Well, just to make it clear, I didn't to the Botox procedure for tinnitus/hyperacusis - quoting my earlier posting:

"But just to be clear, I do it for TMD and nerve pain. Not for tinnitus and hyperacusis."

But to me/in my case it all interconnects.

However, after some time I did get other side effects from Botox - even though I felt a certain positive effect in regards to hyperacusis.

Well, I suspect side effects was from the Botox as I got horrible cluster headaches for a few weeks.

I didn't get more injections, as in the end I didn't like how it made me feel. Feeling stiff in my face.

And I had to take an MRI of the jaw, and start with other treatments, so Botox was out of the question at that point anyhow.

You need to talk to a highly skilled neurologist to consider whether this could be worth a shot for you.

Many people have suffered severe, life altering "side effects" from Botox treatments--in some ways similar to the life altering tragic consequences of severe tinnitus/hyperacusis from a new kind of therapy. So many times the onset is from an unsuspecting agent, which is why we always need to be super careful about what we let into our bodies.

Practitioners who use all kinds of agents so often (usually) don't mention these kinds of catastrophic consequences are even within the realm of possibilities. I'd recommend searching out some of the horror stories online before casually deciding to do Botox. -- While I'm add it, don't ever take an antibiotic that's classified as a fluoroquinolone (such as Levaquin). Never, ever, ever, ever... A single dose can change your life forever.

I agree to a lot of what you say @Lane, that's why I pointed out to Travis that it is important to discuss it with someone skilled within Botox treatments - preferably a neurologist.

It's worth to add that my treatment was very conservative/few units, in order to see my response to it.

Hello,

I'd like to raise the subject of Botox injections in the muscles which, during contractions, may affect the Tensor Tympani muscle in pain hyperacusis. The literature mentions that the Tensor Tympani muscle is innervated by the Mandibular and Trigeminal nerves, i.e. by the muscles of the jaw (and also the neck?)

Have any of you had success with this type of treatment?

A priori, it's something that's being discussed within the scientific community.

I'd like to try this treatment but I don't want to aggravate the symptoms of my tinnitus and hyperacusis.

Has your hyperacusis improved at all?

So I'm less than 48 hours in, too soon to really give any sort of results but I will say it did not cause any sort of tinnitus spike for me, so no adverse effects so far. I'll also positively add the procedure was near painless; it hurt less than getting my ears pierced

My tinnitus was very quiet, even unnoticeable at some points yesterday but I think I need to wait longer before I say it helped for sure. I am also now suddenly a lot more aware of how much I clench my teeth - even during the day, which I was completely unaware of before. Hopefully, this newfound pain/tension I feel when I do it will lead to breaking bad habits as well - kind of like slapping your wrist with a rubber band every time you bit your nails as a kid, if that makes sense?

It has been a little over a week since the injections now. Sadly my tinnitus is not gone but I have had a few quieter days here and there - and unfortunately a spike today, but not sure if it was caused by something else (poor sleep, noise exposure at work).

I will say the ringing tinnitus seems to be mostly gone, and I only have the hissing/whooshing sounds now.

In addition to the somatosensory tinnitus from your jaw, did you also have somatosensory tinnitus related to the neck muscles (SCM), cervical and Eustachian tubes?

If not, are you better today?

I had Botox done three times for TMJ, and it works like a miracle. Unfortunately, my body also flushes it out of my system so quickly that it's not worth it. $800 a session, and I get about three weeks' worth of relief. Everything relaxes. When I grind my teeth, there is no tinnitus whatsoever. The two people who have done it have commented that my masseter is pretty big.

I still had the "normal" tinnitus. I didn't go further with it, although I'm very much tempted to have it done in the temples and head, which helps with migraines and whatnot.

For the record, I have TMJ, neck problems, and Eustachian tube problems.

Where is the Botox injected? A lot of different muscles in my face hurt.

Thank you for your testimonial.

You say you have problems with your jaw, neck, and Eustachian tubes. Does this make your tinnitus worse?

What are your symptoms with your Eustachian tubes? Cracking or popping when swallowing? I'm asking because Botox injections on the palate can reduce this problem.
