What has happened to to my auditory system?

I've had T for 6 months now but I don't understand the cause. It began when I took a drug called modafinil, my ears became inflamed and i felt stabbing pains in my ears. After that event I stopped taking the drug, since then I have had Tinnitus but no hearing loss.

So what happened, do I have a damaged auditory nerve or a chemical imbalance?

Yes it can....I try and not take any powerful meds...Look up the possible side effects if you see sudden hearing loss or vision then it'could be possible.

To my understanding modafinil is considered a relatively safe substance.

For how long did you take modafinil?

I don't think it caused your hearing issues or tinnitus.

I used it for about two weeks, the last time though my ears inflamed and eyes went bloodshot so something bad happened im sure.

Do you know of anything that might have happened chemically or anyone on the forum who knows about that kindof stuff?

I'm newly on Modafinil for daytime sleepiness and its definitely helping that issue.

So far, the T is a lower, my fogginess has lifted, my mood is elevated, my vision is better & my concentration is up.

The doctor who prescribed it knows about my Tinnitus and said it should be fine and so far, its has been.

I guess like everything else, it depends on the person and their personal reactions to any given med.

I've been using modafinil on and off for 4 years. Sometimes it has a mild temporary effect on my tinnitus (which invariably goes away by the next day), sometimes it has zero effect. It has certainly not caused any long-term damage to my ears.

However, it DID greatly help eliminate my fear of not sleeping (by making sure that even if I slept badly, I could have a great day), which lead to better sleep and thus, funnily, less need for modafinil.

Everything I've read about it seems to agree that it's a pretty benign (though of course not risk-free) substance.

More than likely the drug crossed you blood labyrinth barrier and killed or damaged your cochlear hair cells, that or damaged the synapses that connect your auditory nerve to the supporting cells. It's called ototoxicity and many drugs have that as a side effect. Tell the doctor that prescribed those to you "thanks asshole!".

@JohnAdams Would current efforts to regenerate hair cells address both of these issues?
