But Why Do My Ears Hurt?

Cause of Tinnitus
Unknown, maybe stress, maybe depression
I understand I have tinnitus now, I understand it's permanent, but why do I feel this pressure or pain in my ears? Specifically the one with tinnitus in it?

Literally no doctor even cares to look at my ear they just say, oh you have tinnitus, that sucks, join a support group. Yeah well my ear hurts, take a damn look and do your job.

in my case, actual pain and sensations of fullness have everything to do with muscle tension and dysfunction in the jaw and cervical spine. I do notice that the tinnitus tends to get worse when those muscles are really in crisis.

Physiotherapy, yoga, warm compresses and stuff like that dramatically reduce the amount of pain and fullness I have; in my case I also have TMJ, and sleeping with a TMJ appliance for the past year has also stabilized my jaw and overall reduced the intensity of my ear symptoms.

My ears still hurt (off and on) even after a year from an acoustic trauma. It feels like it's up in the auditory nerve. there are times I have zero pain, and time when I have pain. I think it's all part of the healing, as nerves can take years to heal. (Ibuprofen is very effective for the pain) My T has dropped in volume by about 80%, and continue to improve, but everything is a slow process.
BTW, Why do you think your T is permanent? Many times T is not permanent. It just takes many months (up to 2 years or more) but it can fade

By how much? I have this problem and I want to know how much I can reduce my tinnitus by.

Not much more to add than what has been said, but it's most likely a TMD/TMJ issue. It feels SO much like an ear infection at times you'll really believe it's your ear, but it's probably due to muscles in the area. You can go for physical therapy or start by looking for videos on how to massage your lateral and medial pterygoid.

It can fade so much that you won't be able to hear it. Have you experienced any fading/major changes in the past three months?
Yup. I'm in a room right now that I used to be able to hear it easy. Now I can't. I think it has to do with my posture and muscle massaging regiment. It also varies like a bitch.

Is it a high pitch tone? When it is changing, it is a good sign. The worst possible sign is when it is relentlessly at the same level all of the time. If it had improved, it will most likely continue to fade.

I certainly hope. It is really volatile. It can go from quite loud to basically silent within 5 minutes and back.

I also have TMJ

I also have TMJ. Most related to my bad postures and bruxism.

This halloween, I was with my kids asking for trick or treat. I was a Vampire and was using one of those plastic vampire teeth in my mouth... well that was not a good idea jajaj. Back at home, I took the teeth off and my jaw was almost locked, it was cracking ALOT just doing simple open and close movements. My joints were hurting also my ears.

It took couple of days to settle down.

Lesson learned jejej.

Big chances that your Tinnitus is caused my TMJ.

In your profile you say that, T started because of stress and depression.

Stress is one of the biggest triggers of TMJ. All your TMJ get sore, inflamation, and that can cause pain in your jaw, your teeth, your neck, shoulders, head, and yes, your ears. Pain and fullness in your ears. TMJ also causes Tinnitus.

It would be great if you can check this out with a TMJ specialist.

You're all starting to make me think it might actually be TMJ but I'll make sure to get a Primary Care Doctor as I find these specialists will only diagnose you if it falls within the realm of their expertise.

Mine can vary wildly, it's a high pitched tone that can be loud for an hour or so and then there are times I straight up can't hear it, when the high pitched one is low I can here another one that sounds like two tons that are at much lower frequency. Yesterday it spiked and it's been kind of intrusive (especially today) but it was getting better every few days, it's only in my right ear.

Coffee and Alcohol don't seem to effect it but when I eat something it gets louder.

I got a hearing test, no hearing loss. When I talk my middle/inner ear vibrates like their's fluid in there or something, my shoulders , neck and muscles around/in my ear feel tense I get headaches on that side as well. The other ear feels perfectly fine.

My dentist, who is a DDS, checked me for TMJ problems, and didn't find anything pointing to that, so you might want to see your dentist. If he/she suspects TMJ, they can either help or refer you to somebody that can.

Does anyone else also have random times where the T will get super loud for maybe 10-20 seconds and then go back to it's normal volume?

Can you be more specific on where the pain is? After about 1 month I started to get these feelings of "pressure" at the back of my head. In other times people might describe them as tension headaches, but I never had these prior to my noise exposure. These lasted for about a month (sometimes making me feel nauseous) and are fading now more or less.

Regarding fleeting T. Although it may occur even in people without T I never had it until I got T. They kept occurring daily for 2-3 weeks. They stopped about a month ago, and one thing I mentioned on my older posts was that it stopped after I discontinued B12 vitamins. I read that B12 can cause muscle twitching, and one night I actually noticed that with a bicep. I stopped taking them and week later fleeting T stopped.

@yborleevoor

Are you saying you had ear fullness even though your T is not related to a loud noise? That's wierd!

Have you had any improvement since you got it?

Sorry, a bit of a late post,

Yes, my Tinnitus has gotta a lot better, I had a spike for a few days last week, but otherwise, it's fine.
