Hi All,

U.K member here. Caveat: I have a cochlear implant so am well used to hearing all manner of weird things inside my head, just not what has been plaguing me for the past week!

I am slowly being driven insane by what seems to be an extremely low humming/buzzing/thumping noise (it's not pulsatile). It goes: buzzzz-thump-thump-buzzz-boom-bbb-boom-bboooom. No real rhythm to it. It seems to start in my implanted ear then spread across my entire head until the other ear starts doing something similar. When I move my head or yawn I also get a roar, like a seashell sound (am assuming this is blood flow).

Of relevance might be an episode of labyrinthitis I had three months ago (but if related would expect to have symptoms quicker?). Before that, the last episode of vertigo was over a year ago. I am not dizzy, in pain, or have any other symptoms that I can think of: just this incessant thump-buzz-boom. My implant is working normally except I've noticed that louder sounds tend to amplify whatever is going on as if it is reacting to external sounds. Very occasionally I will get what seems to be a loud buzz by (on?) my eardrum for about a second or two.

It tends to improve as the day goes on and is about 80-90% quieter by the time I go to bed. In fact, I can fall asleep o.k. It just starts again when I wake up - I wake up with a very low hummmmm that seems to convert itself into the buzz-thump-cycle all over again.

I am terrified that this might be a new normal and one to add to the other sounds (that I can cope with!). I will have to make an appointment with my G.P I suppose as I need something to calm me down! Please tell me I'm not alone :/

@Error404 ,
I hope your doctor can give you something to help you and the sound calms down for you.

Hi if i have read your reply to error 104 correctly to i think it rather harsh. He is looking for some confort and only asked for assurance he not alobe. You appear to be stating that people pretend to have tinnitus to possibly help a sufferer which distorts the actual amount of people. I disagree. I have suffered fron t for 35 years hs hbituated then it came back 5 years ago severely. I am coping as best i can but my point is that i work with 2 sufferers another who has a young niece with it a cousin a neighbour a person i barely kniw whe nentioned her son suffering with it. These are just a few. The fact this site is here proves how many people have this. Tinnutus Awareness Week. Advertisenents on tv. Direct debit to assist research. I djsagree i dont think it is rare it is common nowadays people r stressed rushed it is a noisy world with no time to relax which is i believe so many young people r now suffering from it. Older people who are tired but have to kerp working agsin no time to relax. All these people stressed and depressed get tinnitus and focus on it and thts it they are stuck. U are not alone error104 there are millions of people waking up with t everyday. There r also millions of people with it who r getting better evry day and do get better. So take heart you will get better. U need c your gp because of your ear surgery make sure evrfng okay but you will get better. No instant cures but there r lots treatnents trt notched music noise generated hearing aids. Meditation hypnotherapy all sorts my point being that t is now well documented because so many people suffer with it. Please dont feel you are alone or that it us rare because it most definitely is not. Equaliser if i have misunderstood your reply i apologise.
