Hello,

My name is Sara and I have had severe noise induced tinnitus for 1 year now after a very loud party where I stood close to the speakers for a couple of hours. My ears rang immediately after and has unfortunately not gotten any better, it can get pretty bad sometimes.

Has anyone with tinnitus gone through a nose job surgery?

I have a deformed nose from a fall accident during childhood and I have been planing on doing this surgery for years but now when I got tinnitus I don't know if I can do it? I am afraid of doing something with the nose as it is connected with the ears, but maybe there is no risk...

I will talk to my doctor about this, just wondering if some of you have any experience?

Thank you

That is a good question @SaraL. I wish I had an answer. But I don't recall anyone I know having nose job surgery.

Hum...ask the doctor about this for sure.

I work at a clinic that performs plastic surgery. Someone's personal experience would probably be more helpful, but this is what I would keep in mind:

'Nose job' is a broad term. I'd be less worried about surgery on soft tissue and cartilage compared to the kind where they literally hammer pieces of bone off.

Your nose and the surrounding areas will swell after surgery. If a stuffed nose or common cold has affected your tinnitus in the past, a nose job certainly will.

It's common to take antibiotics before and after the procedure to reduce the risk of infection. A lot of antibiotics can be harmful to tinnitus sufferers, not all though. The one we use, azithromycin, is likely to be ototoxic.

Thank you Elinor for your answer. Those 3 aspects you mention there are the exact same I have been worrying about, although I have just been speculating. Unfortunately my surgery would be a big one as the accident I had deformed my whole bone.

About the swelling, i'm thinking this should be temporary? If i get a cold, my tinnitus does spike, but it usually wears of in a couple of days but i'm now sure of how this type of swelling could affect me.

Could the "sound" from the surgery, like cracking a bone harm me since I have noise induced tinnitus?

The infection/antibiotic part I am worried about.. getting infections near the ears would be scary. And taking strong antibiotics does not sound ideal, as they could be ototoxic as you say.

Maybe it would be better for me to wait with the operation until my tinnitus has calmed down, its just my bad luck that this would happen now. At the same time, I am thinking "i can't let this tinnitus control everything I do" but I guess I should not take any stupid risks.
