Can Amoxicillin Cause or Exacerbate Tinnitus?

I had a similar issue. A dental Implant, massive amount of Amox, 3000mg 1st day 2000mg 2nd day on. By third day my Tinnitus when full volume then my head went into super stuffy mode, could hardly hear, felt like I had a bucket on my head. Ended up in ER, said the Amox was not the cause, gave me MEDROL 4mg dose pack and told to see ENT. Got en emergency visit with an ENT next day, said same thing about Amox not the cause, but he did say that Dental Surgery may have triggered it. Gave hearing test, has put me 60mg per day of Prednisone for 2 weeks, then taper off after 2 weeks.
Said may take a few more days till I get back to what I was before. Had hearing test n 2010 and going to compare to see how much worse it may have gotten.

For me, I have found that taking 3 Vitamin D3-2000 iu per day definitely lowers the volume, does not cure it, but sometimes it's non existent. When I stopped taking the Vitamin D for a about a week, the volume increased.
So back on the Vitamin D, for me it works, hopefully help some of you as well.

Also, I took Cipro for quite a long time due to Prostate issues and I'm "almost" certain that that contributed greatly to my tinnitus, I got it when I was on it for a while, but to be fair I was exposed to very loud noises from concerts, race cars, machinery, loud music most of my life, so I think the Cipro just made something worse that was already there.

If anyone know of anything real (Drug, Vitamin, etc), that has helped them, would appreciate it.
Also, I've stopped smoking, noticed a difference after about a week...

Are you still experiencing that issue with the dental implant and you're currently taking Prednisone now?

Interesting about the vitamin d. My blood test in May showed I was on the low side of normal.

Karl --- I believe the metropolol may have been the culprit for you.

My tinnitus was stirred up after taking Lisinopril (an ACE inhibitor), and then I was put on Toprol XL (metropolol), and it got even worse! I'm not taking any of those drugs today (using natural blood pressure remedies, which are working), and the tinnitus remains, after 2 years.

I, too, am very fearful of ototoxic drugs, and now check everything out before I take it.

Hope there is another beta blocker out there that does not cause ear problems. I know that there are combination drugs these days that doctors are prescribing instead of beta blockers. In the UK, I understand they don't routinely prescribe beta blockers any more.

@Karen .. What natural blood pressure remedies are you using.. I have moderate BP .. around 135/95 before getting on Lisinopril 10mg a day.. With the drug I am at 120/80.. but I do have increase ringing..

@xmierce,

Yes, I used to take Lisinopril, and I am sure it caused my very mild tinnitus to become severe tinnitus. That was over four years ago, and I have learned a lot since then, from this forum and from experience.

The herbal supplement I am taking to control blood pressure is Carditone. I've been taking it for about a year now, and it really does control my blood pressure. I started out taking 1 1/2 to 2 tablets daily, and now I am able to take only one tablet a day. Here is a link to information about this supplement:
http://www.iherb.com/Ayush-Herbs-Inc-Carditone-60-Caplets/30949

In addition to this supplement, I also exercise daily (walking - 30 to 45 minutes a day), go to the fitness center two or three times a week, and go to yoga classes when time permits. I also take some other supplements, including magnesium chloride and moringa oliefera (high in antioxidants and very calming). I use flaxseed just about every day, too. For awhile, I was taking fish oil, but am taking a break from it right now.

These things have resulted in great blood pressure, but it took a lot of work and time to get there, too! I think my high blood pressure was caused by a combination of stress, too much caffeine, etc. Making lifestyle changes really helped.

Best of luck, and please do let me know if you decide to try this supplement! I'd like to hear how it works for you.

@Karen .. Thanks so much for this.. I bought Beet Root today before I saw this message.. Your right on a lifestyle change. I have been bouncing back and forth but need to stick to a clean way of life. I copied your post to my notepad and will be my roadmap.

Thanks, @xmierce,

All of those things can make a difference in our blood pressure, so it's at least worth a try! I think the beet root extract should work well for you; I've heard good things about its effectiveness in lowering blood pressure.

P.S. --- We're practically neighbors! I'm in Georgia, too ---in Roswell.

Take care,
Karen

Hey guys, I'm on a round of amoxicillin 3x500mg a day for 10 days for a tooth infection. I let my cavity go a little too far in fear of the dentist drill.

Now, I know that it isn't ototoxic but can it still spike your tinnitus or do weird stuff?

I just finished my 3rd pill and now I'm spiking kinda oddly. It switched to a mid tone in my right ear... instead of the high in my left. It does this from time to time but not exactly in this manner or this length of time.

Can I blame this on the drug? Maybe the amoxicillin is making me anxious and doing it? Not sure if I should continue it.

I read all the other posts here I could find and saw 2 people said it spiked their tinnitus. Can't tell if this is normal because of stress/anxiety over meds and a trip I'm going on or if it's from the medicine.

Thanks.

I'm also going to need antibiotics for an infection in a dental implant unless I want to end up without a jaw.

Is the accepted convention that amoxicillin is the lesser of all the evils ? I know there is no guarantees. I am actually in pain and too frightened to take any pain killers that's what this nightmare does to you. Bug it seems impossible to get through life without AB's

@Evian,
During last March [2015], I had several bags of amoxicillin via intravenous drip during a 3 day hospital stay, and have taken about 30 capsules this past month while at home. Neither time has amoxicillin increased nor decreased my constant T for me. YMMV! Hoe this helps.

@xmierce,

I was taking clonidine 0.1 mg 2 X day [sometimes now 3 X for really high blood pressure] both before and after T began for me -- still do presently. Since March 2015, I've been prescribed another HBP med to accompany clonidine -- a beta blocker -- bisoprolol 5mg 1 X day. Neither HBP drug seems to have any effect upon my T. YMMV!
However, I read that clonidine has several usually unwanted side effects. By no means am I a physician or intend to dispense any kind of medical advice -- just relating my personal experiences. Using clonidine includes, but is not limited to: Pros = aids in sleep; can help reduce anxiety. Cons = dry mouth, especially at night; sometimes 'mild' constipation; 'mild' sensation of fatigue during day. Advise thoroughly reviewing readily available online med info about clonidine prior to physician's consult. Bisoprolol doesn't lower my HBP as much [nor as quickly] as clonidine. Clonidine does noticeably decrease my pulse rate -- mid 40s to low 50s [thus, 'fatigued' feeling].
Bisoprolol has not seemed to have any effect on my T and it was initiated several months after T began. No noticeable side effects at my dosage. I'm no longer fearful of bisoprolol increasing my T. Combining clonidine with bisprolol -- BP now varies from around 118 - 150 over 55 - 80, depending upon my physical and/or emotional activities. Each night, after following about 3 hours of traditional sleep hygiene procedures, clonidine, combined with 3 mg sustained release melatonin, 2 X 500mg taurine, magnesium, and 0.5mg klonopin [staggered intakes] allows me to sleep usually six to 7.5 hours while using an all-night masking sound. Even with nightly bathroom visits, I usually go back to sleep fairly easily. I'm currently tapering off klonopin 0.125mg every two weeks after eight months at 1 mg per night prescribed dosage.
I've 72, type 2 diabetic for about 17 years, one heart attack [two stents], and colon cancer surgery in 2011 and 6 months chemo in 2012. So, the potential sexual side effects, unfortunately, haven't any impact in my life.

Similar situation, on Amoxicillin 3x5days after an abscessed tooth extraction.
Had some toxic silver/mercury fillings when I was a child and they wreaked havoc for 40 years.
Misdiagnosed with TN by many quacks who just wanted to sell drugs, and then tinnitus appeared.
Some tinnitus is known to be caused by dental issues, such as nerve pain and even infection.
The teeth finally abscessed, right up until then they looked fine, even under xray. That is when the mercury was suspected.

So long and short, the TN and tinnitus were caused by the nerve toxin, mercury. Tinnitus got much worse with infection, and then seemed to worsen with Amoxicillin, then both the TN and Tinnitus completely an utterly vanished after the 5 day treatment.

40 years of chronic pain and 10 years of tinnitus over. Trying not to be bitter about it, but if enough people got organized around the whole mercury filling nerve toxin thing, they took take down the whole dental system. So we are left to figure it out ourselves, and it is a nightmare of a problem to diagnose, esp. when neuros and dentists and insurance companies are covering each other's asses.

Thanks for the replies everyone, but it seems I am one of the unlucky few whose T spikes with Amoxicillin, it's been 4 days and I don't think I can get through to 10 days, my T is ringing off the hook, I will probably stop today. I hope it goes back to my normal pitch in both ears. My problem now is what if I get another infection? I'll try probably Z-Pak or Levaquin which is only for 5-7 day courses...even though they are stronger.

I always thought my T was just noise induced but it could also be partially caused by ototoxicity to medications, that's why I cant tolerate even MSG. Sorry for venting, I just can't believe that my T can't even tolerate Amoxicillin.:(
did your t ever go back to baseline once you stopped amoxicillin?

Four weeks ago had pneumonia and took amoxacillin for 10 days with no problems and now im back on them from an impacted wisdom tooth surgery and still no increase in the T..

I took 3 250 mg amoxicillin capsule 2 weeks ago and on the same night the T (hissing sound) kicked in. I stopped taking any more amoxicillin immediately.

Now, T is changing volume everyday, one day higher volume one day lower volume.

sad :(

help?!

Good to hear you're not having a bad reaction.

I know exactly what you mean. I am feaful of taking ototoxic drugs in the future. There are a few antibiotics that are notorious for doing ear damage.

I got "T" from either metoprolol, aspirin or a blood thinner the nurses were injecting into my stomach. If I have atrial fibrilation again someday, I need an alternative beta blocker to metoprolol.

A response to an old post. Hope you get to see this.

I experienced an isolated episode of rapid atrial fibrillation last year. Was given a choice. Metoprolol or defib. So I insisted on IV magnesium sulphate. It worked. Irritable hearts need mg taurate. Something to think about if you ever run into this problem again.

My daughter was something like 4-6 having several bouts of ear infections. Doctors prescribed several doses of Amoxycillin that were the SOLE contributor to her (significant) tinnitus that caused her many problems throughout her elementary/middle school years.

So be VERY wary of Amoxycillin (and other antibiotics)!

Quasi-happy ending: She's now an adult and we have conversations about her (sadly lifelong) hearing impediment and how she's managed to cope with it.

My personal advice is don't...DON'T....trust the health of your (or heaven forbid your children's) hearing to whatever antibiotic your doctor prescribes. Chances are it IS ototoxic--in spite of whatever "extremely low risks" they respond with (ask them for exact %'s and sources if they try to snow you).

FULL DISCLOSURE: I got minor tinnitus from tetracycline at the age of 12 (the only drug I was taking at the time and no tinnitus prior to that) that was exacerbated from Bactrim that I foolishly took for 2 weeks. I am also from a "medical family" and widely respect doctors & what they do for us in the face of unfair, public animosity for being (overly) rich, greedy, etc which is hugely, HUGELY unfair. That said, my experience is that doctors will prescribe "the industry norm drugs" unless you challenge them with "I want an ototoxic solution!" after which they will start researching the problem & proactive solutions further. Until then, you'll get polite (and BS pushback) such as "these ototoxic side effects are quite rare...do you want to cure the infection or not?"

Personally, when I put my recording studio headphones on and the increased ringing impediment is increased, I wish I could relay the comparison that it's like saying to a pilot (or doctor) that the ONLY medicine they can take to cure an infection will lead to a marked decrease in their vision, adversely and significantly affecting their ability to do their job. Until then, no one will protect our hearing like ourselves.

Sorry for posting on an old thread but I now have to take this amox clav (is this the same one as the thread?) 150mg 3 times a day for 30 days to prevent an infection because I had a lot of pus were my wisdom teeth is coming out. Does anyone have experience with this length of time of taking antibiotics? Could it increase my tinnitus?
