I've had an ear infection for about a month now. I was painfully aware that antibiotics could potentially make it worse, so I waited, hoping it would resolve on its own, but no luck.
According to my GP, my ear canal is red and inflamed, and I need antibiotics. As he started listing the options, I mentioned that I have tinnitus and asked if any of them had side effects—pretty much all of them did.
I requested Amoxicillin, as it has historically been the safest option. However, it's not ideal for ear infections since the blood flow to the ear makes it difficult for antibiotics to reach the area.
After another week with no improvement, the swelling in my ear canal persisted, and a new tone in my tinnitus appeared, making it worse. I went back to the GP, who confirmed that my ear was still red and inflamed. He bluntly told me that it probably wouldn't heal without an antibiotic that could directly reach the infection, such as ear drops.
I feel damned if I do, damned if I don't. The ear infection could just as easily make my tinnitus worse if left untreated, or I could be harmed by antibiotics that the tinnitus community says are like poison.
I decided to bite the bullet and clear up the infection, so now I'm taking Ciloxan ear drops. I told myself that millions of people take this and are fine; it's just what they prescribe for ear infections.
I know there's always a risk, and with my luck, I'll be the 1% that gets affected. But I don't feel like I have a choice at this point.
I'm on my second day, and my tinnitus already feels worse. Now I have to decide whether to power through or stop.
Has anyone here taken Ciloxan ear drops and had no effect on their tinnitus, or did the spike eventually come back down?
Why do I have to be punished for just wanting to get better...
