Cause of Tinnitus
Acoustic trauma (go-kart racing)
I have a dancing show tomorrow in my school. Our whole dancing show will last for 1 h and 15 minutes, and of course there will be music. I have never measured on the practice how loud the music is (at all practices I have used earplugs) but I would guess somewhere around 90 decibels.

So tomorrow is the show. And I don't want to use earplugs but I don't want to destroy my hearing either. So could you tell me am I able to go there without earplugs?

I will need a quick answer, thank you!

Why don't you want to wear earplugs? I would recommend that you use them to protect your ears. I don't know if other tinnitus sufferers would be fine not wearing them but I definitely wouldn't be.

I would not risk it without earplugs unless your emotionally strong to cope with a spike or increase in your tinnitus.

dude who is looking in your ears? I wear earplugs all the time. bars, concerts, parties, really anywhere its loud. nobody cares at all. if you're concerned go buy some clear custom molds

Mine are clear and flat to the ear and my hair is short now and no problem wearing them in public.
Wear yours with pride knowing your ears will be fine.

I am the only one who uses them. LITERALLY. I have never seen someone use them at same kind of dance show. I don't even know is it too loud for my ears. And those custom made plugs are big and are easily spotted in ears. These earplugs:
Earasers Hi-Fi Reusable Ear Plugs
are the only one that I have seen that are barely visible in ears. I would rather use normal earplugs than custom made.

Why do you feel it might be embarrassing to wear earplugs? Even if others saw them? Do you figure you are thought less of then?

I wouldn't be bothered by such vain people. Plus remember it's pretty much all in your mind, any shame that you may have that is. Most people won't care if you wear earplugs, or think less of you. Or let me put it this way, before you got tinnitus, would you have thought ill of someone at a dance who wore earplugs? Probably not. If you even had given it a second of thought.

That's why it pleases me when I see things like below, little by little awareness on prevention increases:

Yes, wear earplugs. Like lymebite said they come in flesh color. These can be bought at a pharmacy or drug store.

The gals careless about the ears, they like nice packages more :)

I been to 90db events that lasted 1-2 hours and I was fine afterwards. It all depends on the person and their situation. If you don't have hyperacussis and can handle 90 DBs for 1-2 hours, then go without wearing them. Only reason why I don't wear them at times, is because it hard to communicate them them in.

Again, it all depends on the person and I am not advising it or not advising it. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable and have fun regardless :)

One more question. Should I color the plugs black, or just not do anything to them (they are yellow)

I'm pretty confident that I could place myself in the biggest square of my city and beat myself unconscious with a middle age warhammer and no one would care. Unless people are deeply different at your school, I don't think you need to worry about them thinking you look stupid. The threshold for them to pay any attention to anyone but themselves would probably require the person in question to turn into an alien, grow a couple of wings, or physically attack at them.

Here's my advice:

1. Wear ear plugs. Make sure they enter the inner ear canal.
2. Don't color them.
3. Leave the event if it feels to loud.

Do you wear them when walking outside?

Do NOT go without earplugs. The music may not be that loud (or it might) but I can assure you a school full of clapping people will be very loud especially in a gym/auditorium. Only wear foam plugs to thoroughly protect and don't cut the ends off!!?? That totally reduces the efficacy! If you're concerned about the plugs being visible, you could paint the ends of them only to match your skin tone with acrylic paint. That's what I do to mine when I wear them at work.

* this advice...common sense. Not fear mongering or negativity.

"Omg did you hear that so and so was wearing earplugs during the show?!", "what a freak!!"... Said no one ever. Protect your ears brother and wear the plugs.

I thought that anything over 85 dB can HARM your EARS! I set my personal threshold to 80 dB. Definitely wear the ear plugs. I carry mine with me all the time. It's not worth the risk of further damaging your ears. And have fun!!!

So nobody uses them in your class / group. So what? Do you wear the same outfit as everyone else every day?

You're caught up in vanity when you shouldn't be. Custom made plugs allow you to hear much better while protecting you much better.

1 - they fit you, so ya know, they work better
2 - they fit various filters, so not only is sound more even, but you have more options
3 - they are fitted past the bend in your ear canal. this limits the space between eardrum and plug. Your ears are meant to let sound OUT as well as in. this space creates an echo chamber with your eardrum causing "the occlusion effect". In short, your own voice is louder and it's more difficult to converse normally.

I'm wearing mine right now, at work. There is only one other person in the office that does this, and you guessed it - he has T also. Neither of us care what people think.

It's not loud enough to cause damage here - it's 55db. Sitting in an open floor plan and at this point in my tinnitus journey I'd rather listen to my louder T than be distracted by 30 conversations at once.

NO I am totally kidding, I did use the earplugs. :D So there were 1 hour dance at 1 pm and then a second one at 6 pm. It did not sound too loud, now my T is a little louder but this feels like a normal spike :)
