Can Stress Have Permanently Made My Tinnitus Worse? Unable to Cope Anymore

Hi,

Here's a bit of background on my situation: My tinnitus started after exposure to loud music in 2021. For the first six months, I was in a terrible place but managed to habituate, and eventually, I stopped noticing it. Since then, I've always protected my hearing.

Recently, I've been under a lot of stress at work, but I'll be starting a less stressful job in January 2025. During the stressful period, I didn't hear my tinnitus at all.

However, about two weeks ago, I started hearing it again and hoped it would go away. Now, after a week, it's gotten worse. My anxiety isn't as intense as it was in 2021, but the tinnitus is horrible. My wife and I went to Spain on Friday to take a break from the stress, hoping it might help, but the tinnitus seems to be worsening each day, and I can't sleep. The only thing that helps is sound masking from the pool.

My ears don't hurt, and I don't think I have hearing loss.

Is what I'm experiencing just a spike, or could the stress have caused a lasting worsening of my tinnitus? My tinnitus is around 13,000 Hz and has never changed in pitch or frequency.
 
Did you fly? It could've been the flight, or a change in something external. It could even be an allergy or a change in blood pressure. There are quite a few unknowns.
 
It all started two weeks before the flight. The morning flight made it worse, and by evening, when I tried to sleep, it was noticeably more intense. I should also mention that my mind is so focused on sounds that I hear clicks in my ears every time I swallow or eat.

I'm trying to ignore it and live a normal life, just like I did in the years after the initial onset. But now, my mind is stuck in a low fight-or-flight mode, which keeps me stressed. Today, I'm starting the Back to Silence method to help manage the stress.

My biggest fear now is that previous stress might make my tinnitus worse and prevent it from returning to baseline.

Do you think it's okay to sit by the pool without ear protection since the ambient noise provides good masking?
 
It has been a tough month. Taking a vacation turned out to be a bad idea. I ended up taking Zopiclone for sleep all week, but I stopped it two days ago.

My doctor suggested I try Mirtazapine instead. Wow, on the first day, my tinnitus became so quiet, around 2 out of 10. This morning, I woke up to complete silence for the first time in three years. It lasted for 2 to 3 hours before going up slightly to 1 out of 10. I really hope this improvement lasts.

Next week, I will also be starting Lithium for my bipolar 2 disorder.

I'm glad to hear you are getting a reprieve from the tinnitus! Enjoy the silence while you can. That said, please be very cautious with mind-altering medications prescribed by doctors. In my humble opinion, taking medication these days can feel like playing Russian roulette—you never know what side effects might come with it.

I'm struggling again. I have been on sick leave for a month now, spending most of my time indoors with very little noise in my head. However, today I woke up with a loud volume again, and it only got worse after a shopping trip with my wife. Now I have a headache and feel like my head is going to explode.

I have too much anxiety about tinnitus, and that seems to trigger it. I have tried different methods to relax, including meditation, head and neck massage, Epsom salt baths, breathing techniques, and cutting out aspartame and sugar.

My tinnitus is actually quite low most of the time, and there are moments when it is not there at all. Two days ago, I woke up to silence. But as the day goes on, the tinnitus returns. My sinuses are no longer blocked, but I hear a clicking sound in my ears. I am probably too focused on the sounds, which makes everything feel worse.

I do not understand how people manage to go to work with this symptom. It feels so debilitating.

Could the Epsom salt I used yesterday be the cause of this spike? My tinnitus was very low in the hours before the bath.

I thought I was habituating and on my way back to a normal life again.
