Cause of Tinnitus
SSHL
Hey everyone,

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place or if this has been discussed to death already!

I was just wondering about how different causes of T affect the prognosis, ie my tinnitus was caused by SSHL, whereas most T seems to be caused by acoustic trauma... are these two very physiologically different conditions or is the root cause of T actually believed to be the same?

I'm guessing that the causes might be different (nerve damage as opposed to hair damage) but the underlying neurological problem is in theory the same one?

Do people find that supplements and therapies (I'm looking into the hypobaric treatment at the moment) work differently depending on how you sustained T in the first place?

SSHL can be caused by almost everything. An acoustic trauma is a cause of SSHL. As soon as there is damage or irritation you have a hearing loss.

For instance,

  • malformation of the inner ear
  • head injury or trauma
  • loud-noise exposure
  • neurologic conditions
  • immune system diseases
  • Ménière's disease
  • Lyme disease
  • infectious diseases
  • medications that can harm the ear
  • snake bite or other toxic event
  • circulatory problems
  • abnormal tissue growth or tumors
  • disease of the blood vessels
  • aging

You stated that you have a SSHL. Do you know what happened? Did you do the Knock Test?

No, this is partly what is crippling me with anxiety at the moment, the fact that the doctors don't know and will probably never know the cause, but they speculate it is either viral or autoimmune. I feel like my T is getting worse in both ears so fear it may be autoimmune.
