Have you read the open letter written by Facebook CEO and wife to their new born daughter? It is quite touching for these young billionaires to be willing to give away 99% of their holding in Facebook shares for charitable causes at their young age. The letter seems to suggest that they like to focus, among other things, on the research to treat human diseases and they hope their daughter's generation will be facing less of these. ATA & BTA or even our TT may want to bring their attention to Tinnitus, a condition hastened by the arrival of modern technology - the loud speakers, headphones, loud concerts and movies, modern drugs etc., etc. Future generations will stand a much higher chance of severe T & H brought about by modern living, the gigs, clubs, the amplified sounds everywhere. Zuckerberg's wife Priscilla Chan is actually a doctor and so she may have a special interest in diseases still waiting for a cure. Hope their foundation Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will find Tinnitus a worthy cause to invest in their contribution so a cure for this modern affliction will be found. Here is the open letter to their daughter on Facebook:

During their life times. They aren't giving away the shares right now.

40-60 years from now when they've given 99% of the shares away, they are still left with almost a billion dollars. That's enough for anybody.

Nonetheless, touching letter (regardless of it's being written as a publicity stunt), and a worthy promise to give away so much money. Other billionaires like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are doing the same.

I also saw this and thought "I wonder if they'll put $$ towards Tinnitus"...then I thought of all the issues in the world that are so much worse than what I have and felt bad about it...

People can lose one limb or even four limbs. Just the same with tinnitus. Try thinking of anything worse than a siren in your head 24/7. Anybody can live with soft tinnitus, but with a siren...

No offence but speak for yourself! Some choose death over living with/in tinnitus hell so your mild case can't be taken as relevant to represent true tinnitus suffering.

Supposedly, Stephan Hawking has T. Now that's really bad Karma!
Who's that?
Stephen Hawking. And what has that to do with karma?

It's great news, sure! They're not legally obliged to give anything away, and yet they do. Another great thing is the paradigm shift that's taken place. It is now common for billionaires to get involved in charities, and possibly seen unethical to keep everything to themselves.

So, I don't want to complain... but I can't help but feel that Facebook is also part of the problem, in this day and age. It is for the first time that a private company is the provider of a communication service and also owns the infrastructure. Facebook practically has a monopoly on 'social media communication'. And because it is a business, it favors profit over people, ethics and privacy. This is all well documented by now.

Especially privacy and the 'selling' of personal information to advertisers have become huge issues over the last years, and Facebook is one of the main offenders. If there's anywhere Zuckerberg and Chan could make a big impact, it would be in this field. Yet, we're given a 'robbing Peter to pay Paul' situation, where Facebook's profits are used to solve problems elsewhere.

Which is better than not solving problems at all...

But still...

Yes, he is a brilliant theoretical physicist some call him the greatest since Einstein. What I admire is that he is not a quitter despite his immense challenge being living on the wheelchair most of his adult life, and unable to speak to communicate his thought. He has to use a computer to interact with the world. The guy has a brilliant, beautiful mind and yet a vegetative body. I won't want anything more to pile up on his already huge challenge to live his life. So hopefully his T is mild if he has one.

"I applaud their emphasis on 'promoting equality,' but that starts with paying one's taxes," said Gabriel Zucman, an economics professor at the University of California, Berkeley. "A society where rich people decide for themselves how much taxes they pay and to what public goods they are willing to contribute is not a civilized society."
