Cause of Tinnitus
Meningitis
I have had tinnitus for as long as I can remember. I have never had silence.

I believe it was caused by Meningitis which I contracted as a 10 day old baby. It caused a few problems, teeth and hearing, so it's not a leap to think it also caused my tinnitus.

For a while all I heard were thousands, and thousands of cicadas but as I got older it has got more severe to the point of affecting my sleep and daily life while also increasing the types of sounds I hear. There is pulsating, ringing, cicadas, static and what I call a long, high pitch line that fades in and out. It definitely gets worse in certain situations which I now avoid as much as I can.

I just really, really, really want some peace and quiet for once. Some form of silence.

Because I have never told anyone or seen anyone for this particular thing, is there anything that could potentially lessen it that doesn't require medication?

Sorry to hear you had to go thru meningitis as a 10 days old baby, life is very cruel. You could try Gingko Biloba at 120 mg dosage a day, NAC 600 mg a day and maybe Lithium Orotate 5 mg a day to see if you could see some improvement. Take them at least a month.

Are you wearing hearing aids? That's the first step...
No I haven't got hearing loss to that degree, just certain frequencies and letter sounds don't register properly. Is that something I can go to a clinic and ask for if proper hearing loss isn't involved?

There could be. You should see a doc. Why haven't you?
Didn't think there was much anyone could do from what I saw. I just thought it was pretty normal until recently. I also tend to have a lot of physical problems and I hate bringing up more issues when I don't have to.

Oh, so sorry you are struggling right now.
Have you tried Melatonin to help you sleep? Are you masking?
Try to calm down, the anxiety makes tinnitus so much worst.
Once

More studies show that even minor hearing loss correction can be beneficial to tinnitus perception. Definitely get a hearing test and try a hearing aid, some have masking combination with pleasant sounds...

Yeah when I really struggle I use Melatonin, I try not to rely on it too much though. I mask with music most nights.

They do?? Does it drown out the rest of the world too when the masking is active or is it just light?

By regaining some frequencies it may already help you with the perception of tinnitus. The masking volume is set by your audiologist normally but you'll be able to hear external sounds well. Loud settings would harm your hearing, the audiologist will know all that...

Wow, that's very useful to know, thank you.
