Hi guys,

I've never been that much into music but I recently discovered that playing an instrument is a great relief from... all the problems really. Concentrating really hard on a pleasant task can be very relaxing :)

But I was wondering if I should be wearing earplugs when practicing... The sound of my guitar doesn't seem *that* loud but it's in 80-85dB range.... Any musicians here? :)

I'm mostly playing classical guitar, fingerstyle stuff.

I mostly use my acoustic guitar, but I find that my classical guitar is significantly quieter because of the nylon strings. I prefer playing in a mute manner instead of wearing plugs. The only time I wear plugs is when I'm recording.

I miss playing and I'm thinking of playing again.
I just played years ago at Elderly Care homes...Love glynis

Where did you measure the 80 to 85 dB? Right in front of the guitar or near your ears? It seems a bit loud to me.

Nylon stringed guitar is one of the quietest instruments, especially classically plucked (and not flamenco strummed). I don't think earplugs are necessary.

Around 20cm (8 inches) away, in front of the guitar. I suppose it would be much less if measured where my ear normally is...

What kind of earplugs do you use? Can you recommend any good musician's earplugs?
