Cause of Tinnitus
Unknow possibly noise trauma
Another question from this newbie.

Yesterday i got myself a nice cup of coffee. Did quit coffee for 2 months, because I read it could aggravate tinnitus. Yesterday i felt good and thought coffee wouldn't do a thing to me, as becoming more confident about my situation sometimes, despite it's awful. Had an horrible spike afterwards which lasted till evening when everything calmed down. I didn't think about the coffee to cause it once. Today I was with friends, they got me 2 cups of coffee. Afterwards I had that horrible spike again, hissing 8/10, a bit pulsating. Hope this thing calms down again. Feel confident that it will calm again.

Can coffee aggravate Tinnitus? Also got candida overgrowth (red armpits and whole tongue yellow) since onset of Tinnitus. Red armpits went away after using a lotion, the yellow tongue didn't. Can it be related to Tinnitus? I'm on a diet for 4 weeks now, and feeling things are changing for the better, had more good days than bad days. In the beginning I was happy with a good day, now feeling sad with a bad day. Maybe because coffee is bad for candida it aggravate my tinnitus?

Skipped my sleeping med's for 2 days, sleep for 1 to 2 hours both days, last night I took 2,5 mg zolpidem to sleep 5 hours, next 2 nights I will quit the med's again. I need to sleep on my own without med's at time, better start sooner than later. Despite the lack of sleep I'm not feeling really tired happily.

Do you guys have some tips for sleeping, or will it improve at time by itself? Things are changing, not longer suicidal and enjoyed a evening with friends last night. Thinking about it almost all the time, but feeling it will change when I habituate.

Bless you all.

Can coffee aggravate Tinnitus?

Hi Benoves, the answer is yes.

Everything that "affects" your bloodstream may causea a spike in your Tinnitus.

I have the same problem, I have spikes because of Coffee, but I just can't stop drinking it jeje.

Is not something permanent, spikes caused by coffee, in my experience, should go away after some hours, sometimes days after stopping drinking caffeine.

Once you get in peace with your T, having spikes because of drinking coffee are not that big deal.

Regards,

Coffee can give you jitters and raise blood pressure/cause anxiety and nervousness. All of this can impact your tinnitus and bother you. I don't touch that stuff anymore, it's not worth ramping up my system.

i drink it....a cup a day usually...no problems here and it is proven to have no effect on T

Stopped drinking coffee after T onset because of everyone saying it worsens T, then started drinking it again. No effect on my T whatsoever, and neither does sugar/salt or any other foods you hear about on the forum that could affect T. In fact, I always had a healthy diet until my T started. I figured if I'm going to be miserable anyways, at least I can cut myself some slack and enjoy anything I want as far as food and drinks go. Personally, I feel its all in people's heads that certain foods affect their T to such a great extent, however, maybe that's because it doesn't affect me. I find it hard to believe either way. Do what feels right for you.

As with a lot of things I think it depends on the person. Research results or not, in my case it seems coffee makes my T go up.

I started drinking it again after not doing so for awhile and after a couple days my T was much louder. I held off on stopping because of all the "it doesn't effect T" comments, but then finally decided to stop and see what happens. Sure enough a little less than 24 hours after I stopped my T went back down to what it was before. My next test is to see if I can drink it every other day or what, and see how it goes.

My tinnitus began after 2 months of drinking 1 to 2 cups a day. I was not used to having coffee, but was fininshing my PhD so it helped me to work. Suddenly, one day, this noise began in my brain. I have quitted caffeine for over a month and was feeling much better. Today I took a cup of coffee. Guess what, it is back!!! So I have found at least one culprit! No more coffee for me!

So interesting Elsa because for me it is the opposite. But just in the early morning hours. I awaken each morning to my tinnitus alarm clock at about 4:30 am. I try to use different meditation routines before getting up. Some times it works.

I get up and have one cup of coffee (organic beans I ground) and the noise lessens for me. A specialist told me that it could be the constriction of blood vessels into the ear may be a factor. Of course there is no "evidence".

But oh....if I drink expresso it makes my head noise explode! Way to strong for me.

My impression is that caffeine has no influence on whether it will become a loud or soft tinnitus day.

Haha! But all I take is Expresso! I'm from Portugal, that's a cultural difference. That is interesting!

I stopped drinking coffee and there was absolutely no difference. I'm back to drinking 2/3 cups a day and it has no affect what so ever.... it's so strange the way caffeine affects certain people and not others.

In my case drinking coffee reduces H, and changes perception of T to little more bearable.

I've had 1 to 2 cups daily for a year now. I just quit a week ago. I became sensitive to caffiene- prolonged rushes, and rapid anxiety attacks. Quitting helped with anxiety but T seems to be loud throughout the days. I'm not sure if it's me drastically reducing caffeine, or if it was the party I went to two weeks ago without earplugs. But yea... caffeine has effects on T.

@Michael Smith

I am going on a couple of weeks of quitting coffee. My anxiety due the T was the reason I gave it up. I can say without a doubt that I feel better, less stress and anxiousness and a better night's rest. I chose to have two cups of tea a day to help with the withdrawal symptoms.....headache, aches and pains, etc. Monday of this week I dropped it to one cup of tea and all is good.

I now know that coffee was indeed aggravating the tinnitus.

It will help some and not make a bit of a difference to others, as we can attest to by the above posts.

@emmalee I figured tea will help me get over it. Hopefully my T will feel as good later on.
@Michael Smith

I sincerely hope that your T will feel better, Michael. Tea has much less caffeine than coffee, but just enough to help you get through the initial rough patch.

One more thing, focusing on no coffee instead of the tinnitus is a bonus.;)

+1 data point: coffee and caffeine has absolutely no effect on my T. Modafinil (which is also a stimulant, although from a completely different class than caffeine) has no effect either. So YMMV.

I avoid caffeine like the plague.

Update. T is much better now. It's funny that I noticed my ear making stronger attempts to heal after my weekend of fast food burgers and chicken, and ice cream with beer. It seemed hopeless during the week before.

I must note that I'm pretty strict for a healthy diet on weekdays. I'm thinking there was a nutrient in the fast food that I was missing in my routine meal.

I also must note that I've, since quitting coffee, taken stronger precautions to keep my ears away from any traumatic experience. No loud radio, etc.

I quit drinking it for around 6months last year when I had sleeping issues.

Tried to slowly start drinking it again but it seemed to cause spikes. So I decided to quit it for good. The smell of it is so enticing it's like torture
