Tinnitus Since
06/ 2013
I was finding quite hard to concentrate today at work, my tinnitus was really high I wondered if the two are maybe connected?

I have habituated quite well to my tinnitus, so I wasn't like annoyed or showing it any emotion.

@chamferman . It's how your mindset is. Sometimes my T doesn't bother me but if I'm feeling low T is all I can think about. It's been nearly four years now with T and I haven't habituated to it yet. I know it can take several years but I will get there one day.

I still have difficultly concentrating. It is so hard to focus without having that irritating sound buzzing in your ear. Does anyone have tips on help with concentrating and maintaining focus?

@Ears Hurt . Hi .I find keeping busy doing things helps to keep my mind of tinnitus. I have a full time job so that helps. Also when I'm home I find other things to do to keep my mind of the constant ringing. It's tough but that's my way of dealing with tinnitus.

I find concentrating hard with both ears being so loud and a muzzy head, brain fog and sleepy.
I go really quiet till I start to pick up a bit.....lots of love glynis

It's difficult because my job is in an office. I am always monitoring the sound in my ears and need to stop. It's so hard to work or think for that matter.

I hoped to find some tips how to overcome concetrantion problems but unfortunately I see lots of us strugle with it. My work is in the office, I use ither in-ear maskers during the day or sound enrichment (sounds of nature) but still find it difficult to concentrate when trying to focus on more complex tasks. I can do some simple repetetive tasks, I can write emails and conduct meaningful conversions, but when I'm alone in the office and try to concentrate on analysis or reading longer chapter I still find tinnitus quite distracting. Anyone else have office work and manage to focus enough to be fully productive? I think we have some members that have offiec work or even managerial positions and still manage well.

Unfortunately, concentrating on things such as reading or writing can become a difficult task if tinnitus is "intrusive" enough, and sadly there is not much a person can do about this. However, on the positive front, tinnitus can become so loud and overbearing for some people they are unable to work. Keep using the sound enrichment. Try to keep the in-ear white noise generators slightly below the tinnitus. They shouldn't be masking it (covering it up)

Hi Michael, My Tinnitus is not very intrusive I would call it mild (unless I'm under stress than it tends to spike) and honestly writing and reading is not such a big issue for me - at home I can read books easily and manage to follow the thread. What I find the most challanging is reading things at work which inlcude figures and conducting analysis. I find it the most distressing since prior T I was really good in analytical skills and was well recognized by the organisation at my work as one of the best analysts. Now my biggest mental asset suffers and for that reason I have problems at work. In the past thanks to my skills I managed to reach managerial level which unfortunately I'm going to lose since my mental agility suffers. I'm affraid that if I don't improve in this area I'm gonna have to change my position to the one which requires less concentration and analytical skills which is a pity since I really enyojed and loved was I was doing.

I understand how you feel Mentos, for I was medically retired from my job many years ago because my tinnitus was so loud and intrusive. Life is problematic and very few of us go through it without problems. Though you might have to take-up another position which I know you don't want. Try to look at things positively knowing you are still able to work.
Sorry to hear about your situation.

Positivity and tinnitus

For some people prolonged intrusive tinnitus can be very stressful and at times debilitating. This can sometimes lead to depression and a person may need to go on a course of antidepressants. I have often been asked in tinnitus forums and via email "It is great if you're able to be positive, but simply telling someone to be more positive about tinnitus isn't going to change anything". I want to clarify here and now, that isn't what I mean.

Thinking more positive about tinnitus and bringing positivity into your life takes time it isn't achieved overnight or by simply thinking to yourself "I must be positive about my life". If a person wants to improve the quality of their life they have to be prepared to try and help themselves, because there is no wonder drug or operation that can cure tinnitus at this time. Unless a person faces these facts they will forever be trawling the Internet going from forum to forum complaining why there is no treatment for tinnitus when actually many of these people want a complete cure.

I once read a newspaper article that mentioned: nineteen out of twenty medical conditions cannot be cured. Someone once told me "I don't want to be positive about tinnitus, I hate it. Being positive wont make it go away. This is true, however, thinking more positive and bringing positivity into your life will reduce the perception on how you relate to tinnitus. CBT and TRT are based on having a positive attitude, without that these treatments aren't effective.

Long before CBT, TRT and the Internet came on the scene Doctors have been telling tinnitus patients, there's no cure you'll have to learn to live with it. Most of us know this is easier said than done. So how does one start to think more positive about their tinnitus and to bring positivity into their life?

The fact that someone with tinnitus is reading this page suggests to me their tinnitus for today at least isn't so intrusive that they are unable to function, for that I'm pleased because this is something positive, instead of lying in bed on medication doing nothing. If you are able to work that's even better as your tinnitus isn't so severe you're incapacitated. I see this as something positive in a person's life. Being able to earn a living and support yourself. Therefore, you're able to do all the daily tasks one needs to survive in this world. You may have some difficulty granted, but you're still achieving and that's progress.

It is still better than someone that is visually impaired or severely disabled and unable to earn a living. Or, people with severe tinnitus that are depressed and on medication and unable to work. So by looking at our own circumstances and seeing what we're able to do and achieve we can think more positively about ourselves. There is nothing more satisfying than being independent and I suggest you hold onto those thoughts.

If you live by yourself consider getting a cat or a dog so your home environment won't feel so lonely. If you have a partner and family think about spending some quality time with them, as this can help reinforce your sense of belonging, and the love that binds you together, then your T won't make you feel so isolated. Sometimes opening up sharing your thoughts and how you feel can help immensely and keep negativity at bay.

I have just given a synopsis of what I believe can help a person's quality of life improve with positive thinking. It doesn't happen overnight but a lot can be achieved when one is prepared to try. By moving forwards and taking one day at a time you can occasionally look back and see how far you have come.

What is your opinion on listening to the general fuzz acrn website? When i hear this my T either vanishes or becomes very low...I listen to this throughout the day pretty much and it helps alot. I work in an office setting as well and am able to concentrate and do what i have to do. At night I play a masking sound and just blend it in with the sound of my T.

@Jomo
I have never heard of the fuzz acrn website until now, so thanks for telling me. It is not for me unfortunately, but if it helps you that is fine. Although some people blend in masking sound with their tinnitus, known as the "mixing point". I advise caution. If the sound enrichment is masking your tinnitus so that It can't be heard, then your brain will never be able to habituate to the tinnitus. The preferred method, is to make sure you can hear your tinnitus above the "sound enrichment". Whether that is: white noise, nature sounds or music.

I work in an office and yes it can be dificult to concentrate on bad days, especially with little or no sleep. Most of the time I can carry out my tasks OK but often by mid-afternoon the noises in my ears make it hard to maintain concentration. I tend to get off my chair and move around when I can to help. Just sitting at the desk for long periods can be difficult. At least work can force you to take your mind off the T for a bit. I find relaxing at home even harder than concentrating at work.

I instead find it more difficult than telaxing at home. At home I can do some less intellectual tasks like watching TV, playing plasystation, reading a book (with not a very complicated thread so that I don't have to concentrate hard), or some physical activities like gardening or taking care for my acquarium. But at work in the office when I have to concentrate or prepare myslelf for some presentation of speech which requires learning some things by heart it's a challenge. If I could do at work as good as I do at home I would feel much better with my T.

You are still unlearning your tinnitus percept. Give it more time and have a look at the back to silence thread/video. Be heartened by terrys experience of using the above method. As he says in his video * i no longer hear my tinnitus*
