Hi all, I'm 21 years old and..

My tinnitus began 6 weeks ago out of the blue when I was lying in bed. Nothing seemed to have caused it other than potentially using ear buds for long periods of time over the years. I go through days where I feel like I can cope with this noise but a lot of the time I just cant. It has changed rather a lot too - started off as a high pitched noise then became more of a high pitched hiss but it varies throughout the day.

I know the worst thing to do is to constantly monitor it and hope it'll be gone but I just really can't help it! I want to accept it and move on but my brain just doesn't seem to want to let me. Any advice?

Lock up your headphones and earbuds. Don't get tempted by sound therapy if yours is noise induced. Avoid loud noises too. Do yoga for relaxation and the 4 step breathing technique which I promote everywhere is fantastic to fight stressful moments.

We can't guarantee it but the sound might go away if you take care of your ears. But only time can tell. Hissing is a good sign though.

@Applejuice Appreicate the advice. Have not used headphones at all since it started i think they may have been the cause in the first place. I have an appointment with a 'tinnitus expert' in the next couple weeks but i really cant see them offering me much that i don't already know.

It's so annoying because even when I'm out and about and can't even hear the T my brain just makes me want to think about it and how bad it is when i do hear it. Just hoping it will just get better on its own over time. I spose 6 weeks really isn't a very long time yet in the grand scheme of things, just feels like it is!!

The best thing you can do is to give your ears a break. Stop listening to music, try to avoid loud places (or wear ear plugs if you must), basically try to lay low.
Most Tinnitus will resolve itself, but it can take 6-18 months to fully fade. It sounds like yours is mild, so I would guess it will take less time. Oh, and stop using headphones. The damage they cause is cumulative, and over many years will cause permanent damage.

@jjflyman I'm trying my best to do so. Having just finished exams and university it's a pain because i wanna go out and celebrate in places like clubs which i know will do me no good even with ear plugs. But i spose i gotta try and live my life as normally as possible eh. I suppose it is pretty mild compared to some people on here. It fluctuates between ringing and hissing with no apparent reason. I also spose it's very difficult to find people on here who've had it go away because if it wasn't a problem they wouldn't be here!

You last sentence is a good point. When people's T fades way, they simply move on with their lives and we rarely hear the success story. Protect your hearing from now on and I'm sure you'll be fine. I look forward to the day where you post your success story to help others.

@jjflyman Absolutely man I'm gonna make sure i protect myself from now on. Trust me, if this shit does ever go away i will be posting all about it on here. I wish more people would do the same really and I'll definitely be wanting to give back to this place and offer some hope to those who are suffering!

I think your tinnitus has a real chance of improving - if you protect yourself. No clubs! Temporary fun that you'll forget about in a week vs ....

Agree, rest your ears.
If you sometimes can't hear it outside it's only a matter of time before your awareness shifts onto something else, little by little you'll have breaks from noticing it, gradually, leading you to habituation. You're only six weeks in, Soon enough you'll be bored by the sound and your mind will be occupied by other stuff which means you can tune out and if it's mild you will get lots of natural masking, which once you stop monitoring it will be beneficial...
