I will go to Japan. Can someone give some last minute tips for flying?

I have enough hearing protection:
- Peltor X5A earmuffs
- Bose noise cancelling headphones
- Normal earplugs (3 pair)
- Alpine earplugs
- EarPlanes

I have read that keeping your jaw fully open during the take-off and ascending is also good. I will also chew gum and yawn as much as I can.

Do you guys have any other tips? :)

Just enjoy yourself @Apocalypse77 try to forget about tinnitus. One more thing, remember to bring me back a present for answering all those PM's you been sending me. I have expensive tastes so don't want anything cheap:)

Safe travel and all the best

I think you have ample protection, just make sure to have your emotions in check. All those gears won't help if you over excite yourself and bring on anxiety.... Take care and have a safe flight :)

I am feeling really good. I feel so happy that I chose to go. Thanks to you all here if you wouldn't have said that I will be fine I wouldn't have gone and would now regret it. :)
@Casper I will tell how the flight went when I am at my hotel and will have the wi-fi on. :) I will be in my hotel room at Monday so expect an update then! :)

For sure I will :) I feel so great know! :)

And @Michael Leigh I would send you if i knew your address ;) Thank you for everything, you have helped me and many other people so much! :)

@Apocalypse77 I remember going on plane rides before I had tinnitus, I would turn up the headphones really high while watching movies because the background noise on the plane was loud so I couldn't hear the TV. Just make sure you don't do that. I wouldn't recommend using headphones to watch TV at all, because you'll have to turn the volume up high to hear and you won't realize how loud it is. The flight may be boring if you don't watch TV, of course, so bring books, whatever else you can use.

You are very welcome @Apocalypse77 and you can PM me any time and if I can help I'll try. I was "Pulling your leg" (joking) as we say in the UK about the present. Just make sure you have a nice time in Japan and hope you go and return home safely.

Take care
Michael

I fly often for work.

I use the Bose NC headphones while flying and they are brilliant as I can keep the volume very low and drown out the outside cabin noise.

I also recommend the gum chewing for descent in particular; it's a life saver if you have eustachian tube dysfunction. Those earplane ear plugs don't do much if anything at all.

X5A all the way.
Try to find a seat in front and in mid section between the windows.

When is your trip?

I don't have any tips, just want to wish you are very pleasant journey :) I know you have been struggling lately, so you really deserve some relaxation and having a good time. (I'm green with envy, I also want to go to Japan :D )

We had to get on the plane by a bus and then walking the stairs. The engine wasn't on but there was some other weird noise. It was pretty loud but no one else didn't seem bothered. I still plugged my ears. But I had to take one picture so I wasn't plugging my ears for 40 seconds. Hope this didn't make any damage. :(

Now I am in my hotel room. :) The flight was nice. At first the engine started making a MRI sounding noises, but those ended in a couple of minutes. The EarPlanes were weird I used them but they didn't mute any noises and didn't help me in any way. When the plane was at cruising altitude i put regular earplugs on and my Peltor X5A earmuffs and oh boy they worked well! :)

Thanks for coming back to give us an update! I'll consider your advice when I fly at the end of the year.

I am currently in the air flying to Miami. Jesus this plane is loud. I am sitting in the middle and feel trapped. I have headphones on (the type tree surgeons use), but the noise still seems deafening.

What can I do! 7 hours of this torture left!

i will be flying tomorrow...definitely glad someone posted this topic here now lol I am just going to wear my custom musician plugs 15 db. Hopefully I can find a way to entertain myself during the flight.

@Elfin Sorry for not posting. My piece of crap phone did not load this site.

Buy earplugs from Miami when you go home! Don't use them in the take-off or ascending because you can get barotrauma. Insert your earplugs to your ears when you are at the cruising altitude.

How are you now? I am terrible sorry I wasn't here when you posted this :(

@Apocalypse77 so you used earplanes only for take off and landing, before switching to in ear plugs and peltors?

I have always assumed normal in ear plugs can't be used because during start and end because of rapid pressure changes and risk of barotrauma. But everyone says the earplanes do not reduce sound, so what's the point using them?

I have a 7+hr and connecting 2hr flight coming up in a week and am armed with 33db nrr foam plugs, filtered alpine plugs (thanks @Michael Leigh for the suggestion - they're great), and some passive "noise isolating" over ear musician headphones claiming to have an nrr of 31db (more like 15db tops).

On a 1.5hr flight a couple of months ago I used the dubious headphones over the top (playing nothing at all) during take off and then some ill fitting foam plugs underneath at cruising, remembering to take out sometimes to ensure equalised pressure.
It was a uncomfortably sweat inducing loud experience but I found no spike happened after, in fact it quietnened down to the lowest for some months. Unless the stress relief of being on holidays was the contributing factor. Slept well like pre T days.

Aside from possibly buying some bose nc headphones this week, is there any other way to protect?

Can't believe how loud flying feels when you have T and H.

Any information would be great
thanks

First of all I want to say you should definitely go!

What you should buy if your H is bad (these are the hearing protection I used)
- I would recommend buying Peltor X5A earmuffs. Here is a link:

- Also buy some earplugs (normal foam earplugs), try to get the right size so they give a better protection.

It is possible to get barotrauma if you use earplugs or earmuffs during take-off or landing. BUT at cruising altitude there is no way you can get barotrauma. I used earplugs and earmuffs on take-off and landing and my ears are fine, but it may be a big risk to use them. If you choose not to use them at take-off or landing insert the earplugs and earmuffs at cruising altitude. I took off the earplugs and put new ones in every hour (I don't think this is necessary, but did it anyway).

I wouldn't recommend watching any movies on the plane because you would have to put the volume to a very loud level. Buy a book or watch movies with out volume.

When I used the earmuffs and earplugs I nearly heard the engine and I only got a small spike after the flight (it was 10 hour flight). I had a great holiday and I would have been so mad to myself if I chose not to go this trip :)
