I think I might have something similar to that guy.

I got Sinus for two or three times and some years back I gained a strange "thing" behind my eye.
It appeared when I was trying to quit smoking. And disappeared after I started to smoke again.:)

Some years later out of nowhere my hears started ringing.
I went to my GP and she prescribed me some anti-inflammatory medicines for a week and the T slowed down.

Since it didn't disappeared I went to the ENT and stopped taking the anti-inflammatory and started taking ginkgo biloba (for three weeks now). But things only got worst.

Yesterday I realized I was better with the anti-Inflammatory and took some. Today my T is better (30%) and only ringed in one of the ears for most of the day.
I don't recall getting much better then this in the week I took the anti-inflammatory. I suppose it masks the T but it doesn't get better then this.

I'll receive my MRI tomorrow. I hope that they find some good news in there.

What was the anti inflammatory you were given and what for? Did they see anything in your ear that they prescribed this for?

I managed to find out that the medicine that gives me the relief is not the anti-inflammatory it was Cetirizine.
The relief now lasts for several days. And it takes something like 12 hours to feel the effect.

But... I read somewhere that Cetirizine could cause or increase Tinnitus (not documented yet)... So I don't know what to think.
I only know that it "seams" to work for me. In my right ear the noise disappears and on the left side it drops to about 30-40%.
The medicine costs 4,70€ in my country and I only take 1 from time to time.

I am going into my 10th week of ringing (high pitched) in tone. I had a sinus infection that lasted over 6 weeks and the ringing started during the sinus infection, The ENT said I had hearing loss with drop off in the high frequency range. Since my diagnosis with a sinus infection and bronchitis 6 weeks ago I have been on 3 different rounds of antibiotics and a steroid regime which helped my sinus infection and cough but did nothing for my ears ringing. I am suffering now with mostly one ear ringing in addition to this I do have high blood pressure but it is controlled. My doctor has changed my blood pressure medication which included a diarrhetic 2x daily, thinking that possibly my medication change might stop the ringing. I have also tried lipo-flavonoids plus, which my ENT says helps some people, but for me I have yet to see any changes…I tired the Ring Relief Homeopathic ear drops and oral pills also, these did nothing. I've had an MRI contrast and also of the of sinus, neck and brain w/o any clear answers. The MRI did show my neck had some degeneration in my disk which has been there for over 10 years. I also have TMJ and recently had a new mouth bite alignment appliance made and have been wearing it for 3 weeks with no results. In addition to all this I had several knee surgeries and take the drug celebrex so researching this drug for side effects. My family doctor wants me to try Sudafed Liquid daily for my allergies and also try reducing caffeine and alcohol. Still ringing and still praying for relief from this torture.
Personally believe that my ears were effected by my ear and sinus infections because this is when everything started.

Have you been tested for allergies for pollen, foods or anything else? I'm "Very Allergic" to certain tree pollens and I went through about 2 weeks with a sinus congestion, cleared up and about two days later woke up with loud ringing. The day before I was out in the highest tree pollen count of the season and I think my immune system was just tapped out while tree pollen was still going strong. Perfect recipe for aggravating some low level T, IMO. 6 weeks yesterday and my ears are still ringing high pitch every other day and low ringing every day since...

It is interesting that he had no symptoms directly of a sinus infection. He also had it chronically for 8 months. This is interesting because I wonder how many ENT's would not test for this. My ENT didn't do any tests except look in my ear.

Jay I am highly allergic and I live in surrounded by oak trees, there is no question that all my sinus issues were allergy induced. I am trying the liquid sudafed (children's was all I could find in liquid) and the one for stuffy nose, not for cough and cold. I used is yesterday and it seemed to help me for awhile. This morning it's back and I just took my second dose, which is double the 11 and up children's dosage. I will be curious to see if it helps. Do you have anything other that allergies such as high blood pressure or TMJ (misaligned jaw issues) or are you a night teeth grinder? I have covered all my bases I know to cover at this time. Just hoping and praying this subsides!

I saw two ENT and the first one literally I feel took my money with a smile and said, "sorry this is no cure for tinnitus" I was so frustrated and sought another opinion who at least ordered some testing and gave me some other medications and nasal spray. I am still battling it now after 9 weeks.

From reading your description, the cause of your tinnitus could easily lie elsewhere (= blood pressure medication).

There are three main groups of drugs which can cause tinnitus - they are:

Chemotherapy agents
Aminoglycoside antibiotics
Loop diuretics

I am "Very Allergic" to mainly OAK as well but also HICKORY and PECAN which I'm surrounded by too. I don't grind or have TMJ for what I know. No blood pressure for sure but Cholesterol has been a little high for about 7 years. I wrote a wall-o-text intro "Hello my names Jay and I have T ...from allergies?" for someone to read and either comment from a similar experience or find something helpful from it.

I'm not recommending you do this but I stopped taking all antihistamines (oral and nose spray) and other meds bc they were just drying me out and making my T worse! I started noticing a pattern taking them in the morning and about two hours later ...increased ringing. Stopped for two weeks and took one 12 hour Mucinex D and had the exact same timed response. Taking antihistimines if you have Otitus Media w/ Effusion (OME) can actually gum up things even more in your ears prolonging and making T worse. If there's no evidence of an infection in the ears, nose or throat, IMO there are no meds that can actually help allergy related T during pollen season. And taking to much of anything to long and those OTC or Rx meds will aggravate low level T even more on top of allergies. You might be experiencing the same thing. I believe taking immune boosting supplements, eating right and resting does more good than meds.

In 2012 I had a similar (my first) experience with T but not as bad and in 2013, no problems. I found a historical weather data site and compared actual rain days from early March to mid May (about 45-50 days during tree pollen season) from over the past 3 years.
  • 2012 only about 7 days of brief showers so it was a very dry tree pollen season and had annoying ringing
  • 2013 had over 11 days of rain and no ringing or sinus congestion
  • 2014 has only had about 7 days of rain and loud ringing
I don't think it's a coincidence. Pollen is like snow and it keeps accumulating and circulating for miles day after day until rain clears it away. I believe that my symptoms will not cease until the tree pollen just stops. It's like a friend who is allergic to your pets, takes allergy meds, comes over and still has a mild allergic reaction during or after visiting. The allergy meds can only do so much against unrelenting allergens. Tree pollen is every where in the air we breath unless moving into a bubble is an option.

I did an extreme experiment (bc staying busy with T is good) during the highest pollen days and noticed relief after 3 days of not going outside.
  • Sealed off any leaky windows and unused entry/exit doors with painters tape
  • Cleaned and dusted house really good and washed and changed bedding sheets
  • Carpets professionally cleaned and steam cleaned hardwoods
  • Changed HVAC air filter, set it to 77degrees (bc HVAC pulls pollen in through leaky windows and doors)
  • Wore and slept in a light weight doctor's face mask in a room with a HEPA air filter fan and humidifier.
On the 4th, 5th and 6th day we had 3 consecutive days with brief rain showers and LOW pollen counts and it was the best I've felt through out this whole experience.

The pollen count has been in the 5's or lower this past week and my T continues to improve. Now if it would only rain...

Sorry for the long reply :)

Jay M how have you been feeling lately? How is your T? I would love to hear it's gone away, that would give me great hope! I have an appt with an audiologist in a few weeks to be fitted for a particular type masking device that you wear in the ear canal and also can be used as hearing device if needed. I am ready to get some relief from this constant screeching. Hope this find you doing well and coping with your T.

Improved but not gone. For what still remains I've come to accept and try not to stress over it. The noise sucks but what can we do? I hope it continues to improve.

There's been a lot of exciting hope from a thread about retigabine.

Please be careful of using noise masking devices in your ear. I've read it can make T worse.

Hey Jay you have the right attitude man the noise sucks but we have to go forward and live our life as best as we can.
Stay Strong

Really? Oh my Jay I appreciate your opinion and I will certainly use them on a trial basis, the problem I have run into is I can't fall asleep w/o masking, w/0 masking I would need to take a Valium to sleep. :( My T is very very high pitched and can cause me to have headaches during the day. I am just looking for something to neutralize all the screaming in my ears. I certainly appreciate you input and like you just hope and pray for improvement.

As far as Medication Chris spoke of I have no choice but to take some Blood Pressure medication due to my BP being above normal and unfortunately mine in inherited. The type antibiotics he spoke of I need to do some research on but I was an athlete/runner/tennis player and now have a TNR on left knee leaving me no options but to take high dose antibiotics before dental work, etc. I have never had chemo and my prayer is I never do.

Hi, Tyty,

It could be your blood pressure meds that caused your tinnitus. Even though a sinus infection set it off, the meds may have been what actually sensitized your ears in the first place.

A blood pressure drug is what caused my tinnitus (I had mild tinnitus that was not bothersome) to get a lot worse four years ago. I also ended up with pulsating tinnitus as a result of changing my BP medications. I'm off all those meds now, and the good news is, my tinnitus has improved! It has taken me quite awhile for the tinnitus to settle down, but it is much more manageable now.

There is hope for you; it could be that yours will settle down after several months. Don't give up; find ways to distract yourself (if that's possible!) from the tinnitus, and in time your brain will get more used to it. Habituation is possible; it just takes time!

Best wishes,
Karen

Personally believe that my ears were effected by my ear and sinus infections because this is when everything started.

That sounds logical. But as pointed out by others there are plenty of meds that are ototoxic. Please taper off your blood pressure meds. Chances are that your T dissipates.
