Developed Acute Tinnitus Six Weeks Ago — Wondering What My Options Are. Thank You.

I wasn't on it for tinnitus but for pain management by the hospital .I came off it slowly but when came off it I could not sleep as didn't know it had seditive effects keeping me sleeping with sever tinnitus.
I now take 50mg nortriptyline and sleep fine (nortriptyline is the cousin of amitryptaline and works the same and stopped my head tinnitus but I have menieres and sever tinnitus for good and wear hearing aids)
Love glynis

You say nortriptyline stopped your tinnitus? Wow, nice. So ami or nor?

Could be due to coming off Amitryptaline for 12 years or strong meds.
I ended up in hospital for tests a week as lost my balance, head pain, dizzy, sick and total reck and had to be linked to walk .

Had MRI,CT scan, angiogram,CT with dye ,MRI with contrast and lumbar puncture ....

Very nice. Looks like I will pick up some nortriptyline ASAP.

I am down to the last two days of Prednisone in pill form. I also intend to fully wean off of Gabapentin by the end of the week.

I will probably pick up Nortriptyline as mentioned. But I am also interested in hearing aids as my tinnitus is noise induced and I have some hearing loss at higher frequencies. Any literature on this subject that is reliable?

Oh yeah- something else to add. Can't tell if its related- both times I have woken up very early and had very loud tinnitus until I fell back asleep for another few hours. But this is the second time I've tried 25 mg or greater Prozac and had a spike in tinnitus volume.

MRI today. I'm sure it will reveal absolutely nothing.

Huge spike while in the chamber, even with double ears (over ear muffs plus ear plugs). Few things can put the fear of God in a man's heart while listening to nothing but screaming in his ears and being inside a plastic tube where they can't hear you.

The tinnitus while wearing ear protection is so loud it causes physical discomfort. It also seems to happen when sleeping on the side some nights.

I'm hopeful the spike will go down. Two and a half weeks roughly until a new appointment with a different ENT, hopeful I will finally get a shot at some hearing aids.

Please be very careful with AD's they can cause the ringing to get worse. Im in a tinnitus facebook group and almost every day i read about someone who got T. from an AD or someone who had an increase after taking it.

I decided against further medication shortly after that post.

Small update.

Not much better. Still waiting on a full hearing test at the local clinic (to 16k, not 8). Absolutely perfect hearing to 8k. No headphones or shooting until this goes away.... whatever it takes.

Richard, sorry to read of your tough situation with T. Your thread, though is very informative.

I too was afflicted by a gun shot indoors (range) but I had earpro on. I can't imagine having none - that would be insane trauma. It does bring to light that any self-defense or in-car situations people are choosing life versus certain hearing problems. For myself, I am definitely considering never firing again. Once was enough I guess.

As to prednisone, I was able to start taking it on day 11. I'd probably have liked earlier too. I couldn't quite tell from your writeups, but it seemed much later. 45 days? At that point, a lot would depend on the condition of those hair cells. Of course, were I you, I would do anything reasonable too. My ENT prescribed the pred, but my GP dourly said prednisone is good for hearing loss but not T. Iow, combining the wisdom of the two docs for my situation, I was hoping the pred could help the hair cells recover.

As to the hearing test, I had perfect results I'd say except a slight loss in the right ear at 6-8kHz. I do wish testing was available above 8kHz.

As to T getting better, I feel my ear are extra sensitive now, and slowly as they get less sensitive the T seems a little lower too. I hope something works for you, and for me brother.

Thanks Richard, I will inquire. The Audiologist I went to didn't have that ability. The GP mentioned it was possible but said they rarely recommend people for it. I'd be curious, but in my case as I'm in my 50's who knows what I had before the shooting range.

Good luck!

Hi Richard,

I hope you're doing better now. I am where you were this time last year. Did you ever find some relief from your tinnitus?

Unfortunately not Mr. Paul. It's been a year + two weeks since I developed tinnitus and it appears to have worsened if anything else. A cure would be great.... any day now..

This fucking noise never shuts off, does it? "Oh, you'll get used to it" "Oh, muh habituation" it's been over a damn year and I'm more bothered than ever. Not just me but several people I see in my daily travels- some of whom got theirs just within weeks of my own event- and still haven't been cured nor are doing any better.

As you were kind enough to stop in and listen to my insane rambling, what caused your tinnitus, why did it fade and over what period of time, and what treatment are you referring to?

Thanks.
TMD caused it and getting it treated reduced it.

I'm referring to Mutebutton. It reduces people's tinnitus by a lot and it's being released in Ireland in a month. Although I think you have to go there to get it fitted, so if you're not in Ireland to get it fitted then that sucks.

btw that's not insane rambling, it's the truth. It's people saying the opposite of that, that's insane rambling.

Nope- not Irish, though the thought of having it here eventually is quite nice.
I'm still dealing with this though, so pardon the foul mood. It's 1:30 AM here and obviously I can't sleep, and over the course of the last year I've gone from mostly going to bed from 1-2 in the morning to mostly after four AM. The tinnitus clearly isn't helping my physical nor mental health.

Yeah tinnitus sucks ass. Don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. Either they're malicious, stupid, or suffering from mild tinnitus.

I kinda go with the logic that the hearing loss needs to be cured to undo tinnitus and forms of ear pain.

curing the hearing loss should undo the tinnitus

neuromod is a brain stimulation device that is being tested for tinnitus and (one form of hyperacusis)
