Does Your Tinnitus Ever Stop Briefly and Then Return?

Tinnitus Since
10/2015
I have had tinnitus since 10.18.15, it is constant for the most part. I have noticed in the last couple of months sometimes it stops suddenly for a few seconds and resumes. When it stops it's very noticable because my brain wonders what happened but it only last for a couple of seconds. On Monday I noticed it stopped for about 30 seconds which is the longest time it stopped, as usual it returned to its normal loud pitch. I had a milder case of tinnitus back in 2003 but the pitch nor the frequency ever changed like it does with this more severe case of tinnitus.
Any one else have this happen?

S' pretty sweet. I would take it as a good sign. I bet your brain is trying to figure out how to have things calibrated correctly.
Help your mind out: Keep yourself free from anxiety and sleep well. Keep your mind active, working on challenging things. Keep the habituation going...
Also maybe take some things that are supposed to be good for the mind, like omega 3(and maybe 6 and 9) ,NAC a couple times a week, and put raw coconut oil in everything.

i think a lot of people get cured of tinnitus, the ones taht don't tend to hang out on forums.

if you're cure, you're less likely to talk about it online. you go online to see if you can get fixed.

the cure rate is probably pretty high

I can relate to everything you've said. I have written a number of posts about it, but in brief, my tinnitus comes and goes (as well as multiple other sounds that appear and disappear as it moves around my head and between ears), but the periods of it going are getting longer and longer.

Sadly, it is still only the order of a few minutes to an hour max that is disappears, a few times per day, but for months it was never gone. I take comfort from the fact that at least my brain knows what silence is supposed to sound like and hopefully, given enough time it will figure it out permanently.

Thank you, well I will take any break in the sound as a good thing. I have pretty much habitated to it and for that reason when it does stop even for a few seconds it gets my attention. I do continue to pray that one day they will find a cure, no one understands it because it's not a physical disability but oh it does affect you emotionally. I just want to be available to anyone that is new to T or needs support as this forum was a blessing to me. ️️Hugs to all!

I wish I could say the same. If only mine would settle on one frequency/amplitude, I think I could, but it never stops changing. No sooner do I start to accept one sound and I get a different one.

I have a cold at the moment that some kindly soul brought into work and every time I cough, it makes the tinnitus worse for a while after.

Hello Irene,

Congrats to habilitating in 4 months. -- That is impressive!

I will notice it gone when I'm busy with background, but then make the mistake of listening for it when it is quiet and it comes back with vengeance.

Last Friday was very windy out and I didn't hear my T all day! -- The next day, I ate bad and listened to music on my computer (yes, my computer speakers) a little louder than I should and I am now dealing with a spike that is louder than at anytime before.

I am just grateful that it is only in my right ear and I sleep fine at night.

I know it will go back down since my music wasn't crazy loud. -- As Boy Helios mentioned, in the first year, it helps to stay off of the internet looking for quick fixes. -- Exercise, eating well, staying busy and masking helps tremendously but it sounds like you already know that. :)

This is the bit I can't relate to, even though it seems to be the case for so many people. When mine goes, I can listen in the quietest of rooms and it just isn't there. I have even been really stressed and angry about it and thinking about nothing but tinnitus and how much I hate it and suddenly it will become really quiet. At other times, I can be busy, distracted, happy in what I am doing, relaxed about my tinnitus and with ambient background noises and then all of a sudden it is loud enough to bring my attention to it and can be heard over the top of other noises around me.

Yes, that is how I have been for about 5 days now. -- Hearing it over everything including my loud humidifier.

At least we are lucky enough to get "breaks" from Mr T. -- For me, it just gets exhausting worrying about it especially now when I am in the middle of a T spike. -- Just need to stay busy..

30 Seconds. Wow. (-; That gives you time to enjoy it.:woot:
Yes, I know the effect. But never more than a few seconds. Almost not enough time to realise what is happening. Sometimes left and right ear not at the same time, which gives me a very short vertigo sensation. But it is rare and only happened a few times in my almost 8 months of tinnitus. What happens inside your head/ears when something like that happens???

I think that if humans were born with T, and suddenly disappear and heard only silence, then there would exist a Tinnitus Talk for people scared because their sound is gone. The brain is a real troll.

Mine will stop for a few minutes after listening to music on low volume for some time and then come back. First year I had it, it was all over the place changing in tone and volume and now it's fairly constant.

Mine fluctuates crazy and that's all right I guess it's probably my brain and ears sorting things out somedays it's louder some days it's quieter some days it'll dissapear for a while as well. I figure like anything I could be lucky and it could go away one day. But I'm pessamisticly optimistic as I always say. Also feel like in a couple years something will pop up to help manage tinnitus better

It used to happen to me just as if someone flicked a switch. It appeared to happen when my concentration was changing or lapsing (like gazing out of the window and then remembering I should be doing something) and then when I refocused my tinnitus would cut out sharply. I would usually get a brief moment where I would feel calm and felt like I could concentrate like I used to be able to do, then, as you say it returns, usually by fading back in until it gets back to its full volume again. It hasn't happened at all in the past 6 months or so though.

I love reading of your comments, I guess I'm not alone. It's amazing how are experiences are similiar but different too. This T is really challenging because there are so many variations of what caused it. This forum is great and I can't agree more with @Boy Helios about staying off the internet. There is so much stuff out there and so much negativity it can get scary I learned early, my son found this forum for me and I'm so glad he did. It's nice to just be able to chat with so many that are in same situation. Hugs everyone.

It is so odd. As I said previously, I just can't relate to other peoples relationship with tinnitus being present, absent, good, bad etc.

This morning, I woke up at 05:00 - total silence, nothing. No other sounds in the house, no distractions from music, TV, etc. I lay in bed for about 15 minutes, in total silence, with nothing to tune into apart from my tinnitus and nothing was present, before falling asleep again. 07:40 - woke up again, still, total silence. Lay there for about 5 minutes, still enjoying the silence. I then sat up to start getting ready for the day and instantly, bang, it was back again loudly.

Right now, I'm thinking about it and it is silent again.

My tinnitus has never stopped since onset in 2013, not even for a few seconds. I know this is a low bar, but I long for the day when I don't hear it or feel it just for a few seconds.

Hello Owen, T can be very frustrating but we should be fortunate that we can sleep at night.

I would never recommend this but in your case, it sounds like you should think about T more. -- Sounds like you have a good chance of it stopping and not returning.

Hang in there!

Are you noticing it mainly when you are waking up, falling asleep or laying down? If so that's happened quite a few times with me. I caught my brain turning it off multiple times in the state of drifting into sleep, or when I woke up, but don't open my eyes or lift my head. In my case I've had it gradually die down multiple times almost down to nothing by evening and stayed that way for hours but then I sleep, it comes back. I've experienced that gradual decline for a period of almost a month then all of a sudden got a huge spike and stayed loud for 3 days straight. It's just the nature of the beast but the correlation between changes/silence with sleep or position has been reported by a lot of people. I've also noticed physical symptoms like the left side of my face being swollen, tonsil, ear moisture etc and correlation with changes in T. I notice if I try sleep with my head on one side it can completely stuff my nostril in minutes. The weird thing is that it's not consistent. It seems to happen every 3 days or so. Like I get temporary tonsillitis every 3-4 days that lasts a day. But I didn't experience any of this before T.

Thanks for the response - I find it helpful to give my honest experience to others on this forum that things can and will improve given plenty of time - even if I do suffer from rather non-standard tinnitus issues.

I have had times where it starts to scream so loudly that I don't sleep at all (and without an apparent trigger, either). In the past, this has been for weeks on end, rather than 1 or 2 nights. Fortunately this hasn't been the case much recently, with just the odd, bad night. It really is difficult to know what to do as I have tried to eliminate/overeat possible triggers and it makes no difference either way!

Weird thing is, I occasionally suffer migraines (loss of vision, weird colour distortion etc.), but this has been the case since I was about 10 years old and has never got better or worse and since it affects less than 1% of my life, I'm really not bothered by it. Anyway, the point is that with migraines, you get an aura before one, a weird sense that it is starting long before you really have any tangible symptoms. I get the same thing with tinnitus. I can sense a few hours before it gets bad that it is going to be bad. Not because it gets louder, or I have exposed myself to anything loud, it's a sensation, rather than a sound.

I'm half expecting to be sectioned next time I see the eNT... o_O

I hope yours settles down again soon.

I definitely have some similarities to this. Certainly the randomness of it and the apparent physical symptoms, such as blocked sinuses and tonsil pains. How did yours start? What was the trigger? - I notice you've only had it for a few weeks.

I once read an article about someone that had tinnitus for years and once he had his tonsils removed, the tinnitus went. It really is an oddball of a disorder.

I wish you the best Owen. -- That is tough going through all that but it sounds like you have a handle on it.

The silver lining for me is that overall I am eating healthier and exercising more. -- Maybe this is God's way to whip me into shape.. Ha ha

I once read an article about someone that had tinnitus for years and once he had his tonsils removed, the tinnitus went. It really is an oddball of a disorder.

Mine started due to noise exposure over a period of 3 days producing music, but I keep having symptoms that are making me wonder if there is more to it than that. The fact that my right ear has been a lot lower, nearly silent, since the day I took Penicillin and that very next morning I experienced the swollen left side of my face tonsil, etc while my left ear was blasting. Until that day it was pretty even in both ears, with my left ear only slightly louder than my right. Since that day I had a much bigger discrepancy between both ears and continued to experience these symptoms on the left side as well as a direct correlation between sleeping which also triggers both the symptoms and T. There is definitely something going on with my tonsil and sinuses, especially on my left side, that I did not feel before T. It's just weird that it's not an every day thing. It's every few days. It's not a full blown infection. I don't have any other symptoms of an infection or cold. Just the tonsil, stuffy nose at night.

I've been noticing that my tinnitus will also stop for 1-2 seconds and then return. It's like the opposite of fleeting tinnitus. Fleeting silence? So odd... if it can stop for 1-2 seconds, why can't it just stop all together?

Any theories on what causes the fluctuations? I can't seem to find a pattern.

Hi Angela,
Man, I think I'd freak a little if I had any time of silence. I wish I had an answer for you, but the one thing I have learned about T, is that it is very unpredictable and it does what it wants to do. I hope your feeling better.

This has happened to me quite a bit, but like you, never any longer than a few secs and off it goes again.
