I may need to take Doxycycline and Macrodantin (Nitrofurantoin) for a biofilm bladder infection I've had for the past 6 months, quite high doses for prolonged period (i.e. potentially at least 6 months or more). I am nervous about this.

Can anyone tell me if these medications are known to be associated with ototoxicity/worsening tinnitus/hyperacusis? If so, I may have to look for an alternative treatment.

Thanks.

If you look online you'll find almost every medication is said to be ototoxic. So don't bother looking. I can tell you I had Doxycycline about 3 months ago and I had no problems.

I took Doxycycline for prolonged exposure to Lyme's disease for 6 weeks and my tinnitus stayed at the same volume so you'd probably be fine. But if you are concerned, monitor your tinnitus day to day and stop taking it if it does spike your tinnitus.

But I'm almost positive you will be fine.
