Loud noise exposure / headphone accident maybe?
Hey guys,

I know I shouldn't post it. But I am still anxious and uncertain.

Yesterday I dropped a super heavy box, measured with my iPhone app again at peak 116 dB.
It did feel as a giant BANG, and because it was in a tight space (small hallway). (Can this matter?)
The plastic bit was also out and it hit the ground with quite some force.

My right-ear feels a bit "full" and my face is a bit more tense at that side, also I think? I have to put my music louder to get the same "hearing".
My tinnitus did not increase by a lot but this all feels weird... Could something like this actually do damage?

@JurgenG

Try not to worry over these things as it instils negative thinking and the belief that every loud sound is harmful which isn't the case. This isn't good for you and I advise to try and forget it and relax.

Hey Michael,

Thanks for your kinds words, after my 1000'th post, it's just, -this time- it feels a bit weird in my ear, the fullness etc.
Not really a T increase I think though.

Accidents happen, re-thinking it and the obsessions at times, is far worst than the actual sounds. The anxiety/stress one puts on themselves, can cause horrible spikes and just mentally grip that person.

when stress and anxiety is under control will the T go softer? Or can it damage the ears more?

For me, less stress usually keeps my tinnitus at baseline(normal) levels. I have a very high pitch sound, so it's never softer for me. In general high level of stress, can increase baseline tinnitus and make it much louder. Less stress shouldn't damage the ears :)

Cannot be louder than some of the noise exposures that happen at my work. I have not recovered back to baseline yet but I do feel a little better after a day.

Thanks for the comments everyone, today it's a bit louder but that's because I barely slept I think.

What kind of exposure are you having at your work?

Walkie talkies on loudest setting.
Those things can be loud, but I think the box falling is a bit louder. (not that this is some kind of competition)
Or do you mean that you have to endure those sounds constantly?

Does the space matter a lot where sound happens? IS it actually louder in a tight space or does it just sound louder btw?
Since the falling of the box was in a very tight one.

I think that sound waves bounce around in a tight space and of course that's not good. It sounds like even if you got a spike after that accident, the spike ended up being a minor one.

Thanks but can stress and anxious cause more damage to your ears so the T can be permanently louder?

I've been wondering the same, and it's possible that T is "permanent" after CHRONIC stress, but damage to the ears might be something else. T is not always because of damage to haircells.

Hey Bill, thanks for the comment!
Don't think there was a real spike even, just had a bit of fullness feeling and was wondering if I could have had some extra hearing-loss without increasing my T.

From my experience, stress/anxiety are bad..But Loud noises/medications have done more damage than stress to me. Keeping stress low is ideal, but in life it can be hard to do this :)

In my 30 years with tinnitus, i have been stressed out a lot, but my baselines were raised by LOUD noises, medications mostly. I speak from my own experience and after almost 30 years I know tinnitus quite well and my body and what has led to what....

Could you share what kind of loud noises actually changed your baseline, and did your hearing also decline?

Loud noises from concerts, bars, being close to speakers. Going to LOUD parties and night clubs. I lived my life to the fullest and I pay with the loud, beyond torture ringing. I accept it and just live with it.

I still remember my first baseline, which was the low hiss/tone. I took it for granted and now it's 10 times louder and more insane. Also, there was no TT for me to come and post to, around 30 years ago. You folks are blessed that someone like me comes here and wants you to avoid, the mistakes I made.

If i had this site, my ringing would have been half as loud and my ears would have been much better...

I would have given everything, to have my low level hiss and my hearing back :)

Thanks for sharing, sounds hard..
I actually have that low, and these days *knockonwood* supermild version again.
Superafraid to increase it again though.. Staying away from parties since almost a year now.

You never protected yourself once you had T? I understand ofcourse, times were different, earplugs not standard, and sites like this, well the internet just didn't excist to share the knowledge..

Did short sounds (like the ones I mention in this thread) also made your hearing and T worse?

Grateful you are here giving support to everyone here!

thanks. I am asking this becaus thursday i had a very low T day. Almost no stress or i whas not anxious. But the day after i had stress and a lot of anxious and my T went trough the roof. I took a oxazepam and the T whent softer. I also wonder why i feel a pressure in my ears, almost every day, only not when having a low T day.

There was no information on protecting your ears, almost 30 years ago and there were no places to buy 20-35db reducing ear plugs either. Nothing was out there..back in those days. So people today are blessed and that's ok, I still enjoy my life to the fullest and I don't look back :)

If you have been protecting your ears, over the years and been careful....then you should be fine. I have had doors slam, glass tables break..lots of loud noises. For me it was a cumulative of all my life's actions that has given me the profound hearing loss that I have today. It wasn't just one door slam or glass table breaking...

I feel pressure in my ears everyday too, so you are not alone. I can't give you a scientific answer as to why stress triggers louder tinnitus. The stress can trigger the mind and that could make the tinnitus louder.
tinnitus is a complex matter and no one has answers to why it's fully here, but i hope it can be cured one day and make our dreams come true :)

I am happy for you. Your body is harder to damage than my body. I had a glass plate fall three inches (about 5-10 cm) onto another glass plate and that seems to have given me a second tone to listen to (although in my case the source of the sound was about 20 cm from my bad ear).

Sorry to hear Bill, did you instantly get it?

I still have a mild fullness feeling and I also feel it a bit in my face, don't know wether it's related. Also wondering if I should still go for predisone..
I am mainly scared about the hearing loss now.

I instantly felt very mild ear fullness in my bad ear. The new tone began very gradually, beginning a couple of days later. Then it gradually got louder. It might be improving now, but I can't be sure. I certainly hear it in both ears now...

Did you try to measure how loud it was?
