Ear Feeling Full and Achy After Car Wheel Spun and Made Awful Screech

Hi,

Been lurking here for 4 months now since getting hyperacusis.

Month 1 and 2:

-Serious face and jaw pain
-Nightly Burning pain
-Weird inner ear tingling and itch
-some level of hearing loss
-Fullness and pressure
-Constant suicidal ideation

Month 3 and 4:

-Ear and jaw pain decreased
-Some level of weird ear sensations
-Fullness still present
-Hearing loss still present
-Suicidal ideation has turned into sadness and some level of acceptance

I've stopped taking Tegretol as I'm unsure it's had any effect.

Still taking Vitamin B, Magnesium and Cod Liver Oil.

Still on ADs.

As I've seen some albeit minor improvement, can I expect to keep seeing improvements?

Shaun
You say you have hyperacusis but I saw an ENT at Yale and she said this usually goes away. I had it too. It's improved, not sure if it was true hyperacusis but everything seemed too damn loud.

Had ear problems for as long as I can remember. Tinnitus started after one loud concert about 15 years ago. Got used to it and it wasn't a problem anymore. I protected my ears and never exposed them to any loud noises

Skip forward about 10 years and I was exposed to about 30 seconds of jet engine noise. This brought on some weird ear symptoms which after about 3 years disappeared.
These included:
Fullness
Aching jaw
Aching ear
Weird sensation in my ear

ENT found no problem. And no hearing loss... However I do feel my left ear hears much better than my right.

A month ago I was exposed to 2 seconds of wheel spin noise and all these symptoms have come back.
Anxiety is through the roof and I'm not sure if I can take years of this again :( It's almost like I cant stop thinking and feeling for these sensations 24/7.

Before this incident I was incredibly stressed with work also.

I've fallen back down the rabbit hole of chronic nerve damage etc and spend hours flicking through the forum.

Praying in a few months I'll feel my old self again! Laid in bed with ear plugs in as it's the only way to rid myself of the weird sensations.

Shaun.
Can you elaborate more on what you meant by the chronic nerve damage?

Hi,

I've been suffering with a variety of symptoms for nearly a year brought on by my stupid brother's car. When he pulled off, I was exposed to about a second of high frequency subjectively high volume.

Since then I've experienced:

-Almost constant ear fullness of varying degrees
-Burning in and around my ear
-Tension around my jaw, in my face, back of my ear and in my shoulder
-Pain in my ear and jaw
-Intense anxiety
-ETD symptoms. Loud popping in my ear, crackling etc

These symptoms are not brought on by or made worse by noise. Therefore I don't think this is hyperacusis.

My hearing test is good to 14.5 kHz which is OK for my age.

My concern now is how to get rid of this. What worries me is that it can last indefinitely! I've been reading about music therapy and the need for a psychologist. This has definitely caused me to be hypervigilant and induced some kind of PTSD.

Does anyone else have any more suggestions on how to improve this?

Shaun.

@Greg Sacramento, what is the mechanism involved with jaw pain and/or neck and shoulders? Do we know why this happens with tinnitus? Is there a hormonal reaction or is it a feedback loop that tinnitus causes increased bruxism and stress therefore causing TMD which leads to additional symptoms?

To me it seems this simple: noise causes tinnitus, tinnitus causes anxiety, anxiety leads to Bruxism and TMD and TMD leads to ETD and hyperacusis symptoms. But I know in my mind it can't possibly be this easy. I also seem to realize that many people on ADs or benzos seem to have less of these jaw/neck problems but it's just my observation and maybe I'm wrong.

My understanding is the Tensor Tympani muscle (at this point in spasm) innervates the Trigeminal Nerve which in turn causes pain in the branches of the Trigeminal Nerve (I'm writing this drunk so correct me if I'm wrong).

What I think may help is sound therapy. Yes, yes, many people say it's BS but a lot of people have made improvements with sound therapy.

I'm going to start on sound therapy tonight and stick with it. I don't have much to lose.... And my life to gain.

@ShaunR - do you get popping or crackling in ear upon any action like yawning, chewing?
Not really. My jaw and Eustachian tube do pop on yawning. I also can't pop my right bad ear by soft Valsalva. However, I've read that's common with Acoustic Shock Disorder.

Are ear clicks symptoms of ETD or noise-induced tinnitus, or both?

Can people with ETD equalize pressure changes?
