Eardrum Pulsing Thumping and Fluttering

Hi Folk,

I have been on here because I have a really strange pulse/fluttering in my ear drum. I only suffer from this between 2-3 times a week. But when my ear starts to pulse it lasts for the duration of the day.

The pulsing gets set off my yawning/stretching/hiccups and burps (Not every burp and yawn though!)
I am just back from my ENT who is sending me for CT scan as they believe it could be coming from my blood vessels.

From what I have read online I think it is my Tensor Tympani muscle going into spasm. But that is just google speculation.

Does anybody have any experience of this and much more importantly any resolution?

Any advice would really help. xx

Hi There,
Yes I have middle ear myoclonus and this was diagnosed by my ENT by doing a long term Tympanometry test. Basically its a device that goes right to the back of your ear drum and records the movement. You need to be having an attack for this to work. I was offered surgery as soon as it came back positive. Before we set a date for surgery my surgeon wanted me to keep a diary to see if there is any possible triggers. It came to light that drinking caffeine drinks such as diet coke made my ears so much worse. So I gave up caffeine drinks and do you know what it has been 3 months and I have not had an attack :)

It's great you managed to get a clear diagnosis from an ENT. I was going to say the same thing after reading your first post. Also good you can avoid surgery. It can go away on its own eventually too, but very interesting you were able to pin point it to a specific trigger.

Recently diagnosed and going crazy. How long did it take to notice the effects of not drinking caffeine @steffatkings?
