Cause of Tinnitus
noise + 3 major increases via (shouting / MRI/ flu+Tylenol)
Does anybody have their eardrum vibrating? One month after I got T my ear drum in my left ear started to vibrate off and on and now its constant. It feels like engine vibration from a car on idle or someone playing drums on my eardrum :p. I can handle the T for the most part but this vibration is annoying as hell. Are there any remedies for this? There must be some connection with T and the eardrum vibration development.

Does anybody suffer from this?

Well, that's kind of what my pulsatile tinnitus feels like. What does it sound like to you? Can you hear your heartbeat in your ear? Does it sound kind of like a distant drum?

I think more people with tinnitus may also have pulsatile tinnitus; more than we realize. Also, I don't necessarily think it means we have a vascular issue. It may be some aberration that goes along with the damaged cilia.

Hi Karen yes I can hear my heart beat in my ear sometimes but that is normal what I am talking about is a physical movement of the ear drum , you know when your eye lids twitch sometimes when you are stressed? that is what is happening in my eardrum.

I have a constant ringing in my ears and get that vibration sometimes. any ways i mess around making music and these snares makes it happen all the time. was wondering if it affects anyone else

My tensor tympani muscle flutters every morning I wake up. Without listening I can tell those snare hits have the same effect. TTM is supposed to protect ear from loud sounds, but for some reason the threshold is sometimes way too low.

I have this too. Or maybe I even have two variations of it.

When I move my fingers across my ear I get a "woom." sound in my ear. This is stronger in the right ear. Sometimes when I do this across the left ear, the reflex first goes off in the right ear, then in the left.

But after reading this thread today, it took 3 minutes, and suddenly I didnt need a trigger sound or anything, and it was more like a twich in the ear drum it self, rather than something deeper inside the ear. It "thumped" maybe 5 times with 25 seconds betweetn each thump. I don't think this was a coinsidence. It is probably very much psychological.

The vibration or spasms are not pulsating T. I have'em myself and it also occurs when if I pull my ear slightly to see if I can produce or create it. I did that in the beginning just to exclude other causes and to make sure it's not a character of the T. I also get a very rapid constant pulsating cramp if I open my jaw and lean my ear onto a my pillow when I'm in bed, a mattress or a pillow can function almost like an amplifier, it sounds like a muscle or a bone inside my ear is moving back and forth, or up and down in a very rapid motion.

I forgot the source but here's an explanation of one type of ear muscle spasms that I stored:

"Tensor tympani muscle and the stapedial muscle contract to tighten the middle ear bones (the ossicles) as a reaction to loud, potentially damaging sound. This provides protection to the inner ear from these loud sounds. In many people with hyperacusis, an increased activity develops in the tensor tympani muscle in the middle ear as part of the startle response to some sounds. This lowered reflex threshold for tensor tympani contraction is activated by the perception/anticipation of loud sound, and is called tonic tensor tympani syndrome (TTTS)."

I don't know how common it is to experience this even while being relaxed far away from any threating loud sounds, but with me it surely does. The vibrations and/or the cramps occurs often at night or in the morning.

I get this quite a lot. Usually when my Tinnitus and Hyperacusis spikes. I can feel my heart beat inside my ear and my eardrum move. My ears become really sensitive and sounds make my eardrum 'flinch'. When it gets really bad even lightly touching my temples or ear will cause a spasm.

Yes, I often do some music production, and there are some snares that make my right ear twitch, and these ones you shared make the same effect. I don't understand what disease is this, I only get the twitching on my ear when earing snare drums, and very few times when it twitched by itself, but really few times. Someone can help me figure out this problem?!

My dear Eric...After suffering for so long with true Tinnitus in my right ear...learning to live with it...A MOTORBOAT developed in my left ear which never had any noise before. I liken it to a motorboat running and the engine skips as its vibrating...I can feel the vibration as well as hear it and its really worse than any of the other noises. Today, Im seeing a neurologist that wants to do an angiogram to look at small vessels in my brain!.
This is scary but they fear its an AV fistula..impossible, but I know that angiograms are so dangerous.. Please tell me about your vibration noises...Im most interested...you can email me at DaynaRose@aol.com...would love hear from you as you are the first to describe this "car on idle playing drums in ear...I have the SAME sound and doctors dont get that one...Luisa

i have it too! i got it the same day my tinnitus started two months ago! every time i touch my right ear the tensor tympani vibrates for a second, or with certain sounds, like paper or some deep sounds!

I'm glad I found this thread as I've been experiencing this crazy rapid non-rhythmic "thumping" sound in my left ear (same ear that the tinnitus is loudest) on random mornings when I first awake. I've been able to stop this by plugging that ear. VERY STRANGE

Ive been looking into myoclonus of the middle ear and there is a lot of literature about it and how it can cause tinnitus. I know there is a surgery where they cut the muscle so it cant contract and spasm. I wonder if that would improve some peoples t. A lot of times when this is the cause it is objective but i think it could be subjective as well.

Update, I still have this problem strangely though once in a blue moon it will go away, the longest its been gone was 1 week and this has only happened twice.

So at this point I am still left wondering if this is a very low pitch tinnitus or actually vibrations.
This track masks it almost 100% so I am have it on 24/7.

@Eric N , that track is perfect for me too, I think that's the first time I've come across somebody with the same kind of very low pitched sound. I use the sound of a jet engine, low, on a loop:
https://ccrma.stanford.edu/~dattorro/Tin/tin.html.
I have always tried to explain my tinnitus sound as a vibration, like a truck idling down the road. I have had it for over 7 years and I now believe muscle tension is a key factor. Not necessarily the tensor tympani muscle, could be one of the other muscles in the middle ear. Seems it's difficult to get a definite diagnosis and treatment for this. I don't think they operate in my part of the world, and that operation seems horrible anyway and results in other nasty symptoms.

Mine seems to be evolving more as well, where I can literally feel vibrations in my ear that will last quite awhile..happens often after sleeping and I believe it is from clenching in my sleep..so TMJD or muscle tension. Wearing cotton in my ear usually makes it stop...or helps too..I also have H, but I feel the H stems from this condition..the muscles in my ear totally out of wack and it started after eating (TMJD)

I started with very low hyperacusis in very very acute sounds a lot of years ago. After started this fluttering... and then bad bad hyperacusis.
Now, four years after I have this fluttering (autophony) in the ear where my hyperacusis is lower. Is annoying but...perhaps valium help, sport... I'm líving stress moments and this is very often. I think is called TTTTS, can surgery a solution, I d0n't know.

PROTECT YOU YEAR, THE HYPERACUSIS CAN BE THE NEXT.

@Street Spirit - Did you get prescribed a oral appliance to pull your lower jaw ahead? It's for TMJD and sleep apnea. Maybe that along with using a muscle relaxer occasionally would help your T & H? I used a elastic mandibular advancer last night and my T was much less in the morning. I'm also trying different exercises & stretches for my neck as advised by my physical therapist.

I seen my TMJ specialist Tuesday and he likes the banded advancers more than the other adjustable type.

I will be seeing a specialist this month. I was taking clonazepam daily, but I am almost weaned now. It helped ALOT in the beginning, but like any other typical benzo, I needed to up the dosage, of which I refuse to do, so I tapered. Also, I know for T and H, it's not good longterm...at least from what I have read. I do have a bottle of flexoril, it works great, but it's super strong for me..however once in awhile is alright. Hopefully I see some results with doctor..I am also waiting for botox injections too for my TMJD.

I seen a ENT earlier today and asked him several questions including using botox for tinnitus. He said that he didn't think it would be effective injected into the jaw, possibly thru the eardrum into the stapedius muscle, but that would be difficult. About cutting the stapedius muscle, he said that would be irreversible, so did not recommend. It also helps dampen sudden loud sounds. My audiogram was similar to a year ago and he said he has seen a lot worse. I may post it to compare to others. I hate to say but he was not optimistic about AM-101, Autifony, etc. in the near future, but he could be wrong.

I did get him to write a script for Flexerol (muscle relaxer) to replace Robaxin. He thought tension in the neck could aggravate tinnitus. Asked about Arches and he said it helps about half the people taking it. What else did I ask him?Oh yeah, he said to avoid CATS! Impossible I said as we have 3 of them. No dummy he said, I meant to avoid Caffiene,Alcohol,Tea, & Salt.:D
I got a feeling when driving home that remnants of the " fight or flight response" was still in my memory and that I would need to address them somehow to move forward. As someone said to me in the past, treat the depression not the tinnitus.

Edit: Today I think something is just plain wrong with my left ear ( airplane incident in 2008) or upper cervical facet joint hypertrophy causing left ear noise (very loud hissing) My noise was very gradual from 2008 till present.

I'm replying to your post simply because I'm watching Columbo as I type this.
