Earplugs Went Through Washing Machine: Do They No Longer Provide Any Protection?

Hi everyone,

I'm really panicking because a few weeks ago, during a stressful and busy period, my earplugs accidentally went through the washing machine. They looked fine, so I kept using them as usual. On Wednesday, I attended a work event (an awards show) that was quite loud in parts.

Today, I finally had some free time to call my earplug provider to double-check, expecting they would reassure me that they were still fine and didn't need replacing. However, they told me the earplugs are now ineffective, offering zero hearing protection because the filters were likely damaged. I've noticed my tinnitus seems louder since the event.

I'm feeling really distressed and dismayed. Is there any chance they still provided at least a little protection compared to wearing no earplugs at all?

Thanks so much.

Foam earplugs, for example, are intended for single use. However, remember that if your earplugs, regardless of type, had suddenly become as ineffective as having nothing in your ears, you would have noticed. I'm fairly confident in saying that, yes, maybe your tinnitus spiked slightly, but that isn't the same as causing any new, permanent damage. You're understandably shaken right now, which could be the main reason your tinnitus seems a bit louder. I truly believe you'll be fine.
