Hey everyone,

I just wanted to pop in and encourage anyone who might be afraid of getting pregnant due to concerns about tinnitus spikes or permanent worsening. I haven't given birth yet, but I am currently 4.5 months pregnant (about halfway through), and I actually feel like my tinnitus is much more stable than it was before.

I will post again after my baby arrives to share if anything changes (please send good vibes and prayers that it doesn't!). So far, this feels like a success for me, and I wanted to share my experience. Hope all is well with everyone!

Hi,

I'm so happy to see someone willing to share their experiences with pregnancy and tinnitus! :) I'm also planning to have children in the future, but I've always worried that it might make my tinnitus worse. I hope to hear some good news from you! :)

I'd like to share my experience with tinnitus, especially since one of my biggest struggles when I first developed it was the fear of never being able to have (more) children. My tinnitus is moderate, and I also experience TTTS with pain and mild loudness hyperacusis.

Here's how my experience went during pregnancy, broken down by trimester:
  • 1st Trimester: No change in tinnitus.
  • 2nd Trimester: Slightly more intrusive.
  • 3rd Trimester: Less intrusive, with some of my most annoying tones becoming so soft they were nearly imperceptible or disappearing altogether.
After birth, I experienced a tinnitus spike, but I had also hemorrhaged and lost a significant amount of blood. My tinnitus returned to its reduced baseline shortly after I managed to get a few hours of sleep and stopped taking pain medication.

This reduced state lasted until around 6–7 weeks postpartum. I'm currently 5 months postpartum, and my tinnitus has returned to the level it was at prior to pregnancy.

So, all in all, the good news is that it didn't worsen.

Interestingly, my loudness hyperacusis has improved significantly during this time. This improvement happened around the 2.5-year mark since my symptoms began, and it has lasted, though I'm not sure if pregnancy played a role.

Having ear issues with young children poses its own challenges, but this depends on individual circumstances and tolerance levels.
