Freaking Out — Tinnitus for Three Weeks Now

I wanted to take the time to provide an update. I am approaching week 5 with static noise and hissing t. I am noticing a difference in the volume of the hissing and static. It seems to be getting lower. I have odd frequency noises in my ears throughout the day but it's nowhere near as loud. I feel that it was about a 7 or 8 out of 10 and now it's down to about a 3 or 4 in terms of volume. The volume sometimes would spike overnight and send me in a panic! Is that common?

I'm hoping this is a good sign? I'm still sort of paranoid. I find myself being afraid to use my cell phone next to my ear and listening to any loud noises. Am I on the right track? @glynis @lena_ @Bill Bauer

@Chris M,
Glad to hear your ears are settling down for you and I hope it stays that way...
Just keep plugs handy around extra loud sounds like the Cinema.

i thinkt is a very good sign that things are getting better! 7-8 and 3-4 - is quite different and much better and you can hope for more improvement! 5 weeks in is not much time, i hope it will get better and better!

Hey Glynis!
In your experience, do you find that hissing tinnitus is a step closer to healing? My hissing sounds like it's in my head and when I close my ears, I can her the high pitched ringing.
I can sleep with out masking throughout the whole night, I only need it when falling asleep. The hissing is lowest when I wake up.
Mostly it's like an internal head hissing noise I'm getting now.

It's hard to say @Chris M,
as my tinnitus is due to Menieres and some hearing loss and both ears hiss away to loud to concentrate and not read a book for two years nearly.
It all depends on what sound and strength you can tolerate as everyone is different and if your emotional reaction to it is better than it was.

Same for me. I am at month 3 and half and it doesn't feel like a sound anymore... it is more like a feeling. Sometimes I forgot I have it and I have to "look for" it, some other times it so low I can't hear it. Sure it is still not cool but it is definitely not a big deal: difficult part can be to start sleeping. I think the brain will erase it overtime. The important part is to get a lot of sleep so the brain is able to process that sh!t T!

It is possible that when it gets quiet enough, you begin perceiving it like it is in your head. If this is true, it means that you are at an even more advanced stage of healing than I originally thought.
This has been a while since this has been posted but I thought I'd ask. I've has tinitus for 6 days now and mine is now located in my head as a higher pitched 'static' noise as opposed to the slightly louder ringing I had in my ears at the start. So you're saying this is a good thing?

Yes, a switch from a high-pitch tone to a static/hiss is a major positive development. Normally it happens 3-12 months after the onset. If it had happened to you less than a week after the onset, chances are that it will continue to fade and within a year (probably earlier) you will get to the "can hear it only in quiet rooms" stage.
